Los Angeles Legendary Sleuth

Chapter 290: Capture

Address 305, Ibanez Community.

Henry Rogers' house.

Henry couldn't sleep because of a phone call from his wife.

He only managed to doze off around five or six in the morning.

He kept thinking, was this call from his wife at such an hour a trap set by the police?

He reviewed his previous actions and didn't feel any obvious mistakes; logically, the police shouldn't have been able to track him down.

But he still felt somewhat uneasy.

Henry had thought through everything he could; he could only take things one step at a time now, even if he knew there was danger, he didn't want to give up this chance.

Divorce was his final opportunity.

Henry washed his face and drove out.

Soon after, a car quietly followed him; Luke and Jackson were inside.

Luke picked up the walkie-talkie and said, "Guys, the target has left in his car, execute plan one."

"Received."

"Received."

The others responded in succession.

Luke put down the walkie-talkie, reminding Jackson, "Don't follow too closely, better to keep a few cars between us, better to lose them than wake them."

Jackson eased off the accelerator and asked, "Captain, where do you think he's heading?"

"Don't know, but it's likely that last night's phone call had an effect."

Luke stayed in communication via walkie-talkie, and after passing three intersections, Jackson signaled right, and the car entered another lane.

Raymond and Jenny followed in their car.

Luke was very careful, constantly switching the tracking vehicles, alternating the pursuit.

After a few blocks, Henry drove into a hardware supermarket.

Labor is quite expensive in America, living spaces are usually large, and since many are made of wood, frequent repairs are necessary; hence, most men have good handyman skills, garages usually house a complete set of tools, which has led to the flourishing of the hardware industry, creating a considerable market size.

Little Black entered the hardware supermarket to continue the surveillance...

"Buzz…"

Luke's phone rang, and he opened the group chat. Little Black had sent a photo.

In the photo, Henry was selecting a saw by the shelf.

Jackson also saw the photo, "Has he taken the bait?"

Luke didn't answer; instead, after looking at the photo, he had a bad feeling, picked up the walkie-talkie, and said, "Marcus, abandon the pursuit.

Everyone abandon plan one.

Stand by at your current locations."

Jackson puzzledly asked, "Captain, did you spot any problems?"

Luke shook his head, "No problems… it just feels too easy."

Although Luke and Henry hadn't met, they had been well aware of each other for a long time. Henry might occasionally lose his sanity, but for the most part, he was a cautious, sly individual, more difficult to handle than any other suspects before. It wasn't likely for him to lose his composure because of one phone call.

Simply put, Luke hadn't completed his combination of punches and didn't believe the other party could collapse so quickly, and even if he really did collapse, it didn't matter; after finishing his combination of punches, Henry would only break down more.

Besides, even arresting him at this point wouldn't mean much; he might have bought a saw, but an unused saw clearly couldn't convict him, only serving to alert him.

After finishing at the supermarket, Henry, with his newly-bought saw, returned to his car. He didn't go home but instead deliberately took a long detour.

Along the way, he kept an eye on the cars ahead and behind, noticing no suspicious people or vehicles.

Am I overthinking this?

Have the police not tracked me down?

Then why did Marta suddenly call about a divorce?

Henry began to fret over this question again.

Returning home, Henry couldn't help but dial Marta's mobile number, yet his call went directly to voicemail, "Hi, this is Marta, please leave a message."

"Fuck!"

Henry disliked this passive feeling; he was supposed to be the one in control.

"Why do you all abandon me, mom, Marta…

What did I do wrong…"

Time ticked by second by second, and it had already grown dark outside.

Henry was also starving. He took a sandwich and a can of milk from the fridge and began to eat voraciously.

"Ring ring…"

Just then, Henry's phone rang; it was Marta's number. He hurriedly pressed the answer button, "Marta, why aren't you answering my calls?"

"Sorry, I was a bit busy today."

"When do you plan to proceed with the divorce?"

"I have an appointment with the lawyer the day after tomorrow, are you free then?"

"No problem, that's a date then.

Let me know once you've bought the tickets, and I will pick you up at the airport."

"Hey, Henry, there's no need for that."

"Marta, we are getting a divorce, this might be our last meeting.

I'd like to have a meal with you and talk about the kids, that's not too much to ask."

"Henry, you've misunderstood; I didn't say I was coming back to Los Angeles."

"What do you mean?

You were the one who wanted the divorce, and now you tell me you're not coming back; are you playing me?"

"I'm not playing you. I said I wanted a divorce and have contacted a lawyer in Los Angeles to handle everything for me.

I've discussed it with her; the procedure is straightforward, no need for me to return to Los Angeles."

Henry paused for a moment, annoyed, "Fuck! You are playing me.

I've been waiting for you, even prepared gifts, and now you say some lousy lawyer will handle it; you clearly don't respect me."

"Sorry, I didn't mean that, I don't want to argue.

The reason I'm not coming back is exactly because I was worried about this reaction from you...

You're already forty years old, you should learn to control your temper..."

Henry cut her off, "I don't need you to teach me.

Listen, if you don't come back, I won't agree to the divorce."
