Los Angeles Legendary Sleuth

Chapter 295: The Bear Appears

Luke glanced outside the window, "Judge Walker, the black bear has left."

Walker also looked out the window, "That big guy might still be hiding somewhere, watching us; I don't want to be chased by it again. I really can't run anymore."

Walker seemed to hear the implication as well,

"Can I stay in the car for half an hour? I won't disturb you."

Luke wasn't someone with low EQ. In general, when faced with such situations, he wouldn't directly send someone away, but the condition was that the person had to tell the truth.

If you lie, it means you don't respect me, then why should I let you stay on my territory.

Even if the other party was a judge, Luke wouldn't completely let his guard down in this wilderness.

If it were a stranger, Luke wouldn't let them into the RV.

"Judge Walker, what would you do in court if someone lied?"

Walker looked somewhat embarrassed, "Is it that obvious?"

"No, it's not very obvious, but you're facing Los Angeles's finest detective."

"Oh..." Walker showed an embarrassed expression, "sorry, I did lie...

Actually, I'm here treasure hunting."

"Treasure hunting?" Now it was Luke's turn to be surprised. The term treasure hunting was common in America, with many Americans quite enthusiastic about it.

Just like how Luke previously purchased an abandoned warehouse, it was also a form of treasure hunting.

Currently in the wilderness, the treasure hunting Walker mentioned likely referred to outdoor adventure-seeking for treasure.

There's no shortage of this kind of treasure hunters, but they're mostly people who like adventure, cherish freedom, and hope to strike it rich overnight. Luke found it difficult to associate a highly-respected judge with these characteristics.

"I know, it might seem like I'm not taking my work seriously, but it's just a hobby. Everyone needs to do something different. At work, I am a judge, but in life, I'm just an old man keeping a sense of curiosity."

"What kind of treasure could there be in this wilderness?"

"Some time ago, I got a treasure map. The marked location is roughly in this area, so I decided to try my luck during my vacation. But now it seems my luck isn't that great, it's terrible." Walker took a sip from his coffee cup, "Thanks again for the coffee, it warmed me up quite a bit."

"What happened, why were you chased by a bear?"

"I found a clearing, set up a tent, and then went around to observe the terrain to verify if it was the place on the treasure map, when it suddenly started to rain.

By the time I got back near the camp, I saw a bear destroying my tent. I was very angry at the time..." Walker looked bitter, "I tried to scare it away...

Thinking about it now, I must have been crazy.

I remember at a party last time, a biologist told me that black bears usually aren't very brave and seldom attack people.

I actually believed that idiot's words, almost ended up as bear food."

Walker sighed, "I ran everywhere being chased by the black bear, saw the lights here, and came to ask for help; the rest you know.

By the way, why are you here?"

"I just got promoted to captain; the pressure during the investigation of the headless woman case was great, so I came out into the wild to relax and get close to nature...

And then, I saw a 'cute' black bear running towards the RV..."

"No, it was not cute at all; next time I come out, I'll make sure to bring a shotgun."

"Didn't you bring bear spray?"

"I did, but it was in the trunk of the car, and I forgot to take it out."

"I suggest you use that instead next time."

For most people, bear spray is more suitable than a gun.

Black bears have thick skin and flesh; if you don't hit a vital spot, it's hard to kill them instantly, and it will only provoke the bear's aggression.

"Judge Walker, I have two beds here. If you don't mind, you can stay here for the night."

"Will it affect your rest?"

"Definitely, but I can't bear to send you out into the rain." Luke's RV had two beds, one fairly large that he used himself, and another, smaller one situated at the over cab, with limited space where even sitting might result in bumping one's head.

However, Luke thought that after being chased by a black bear, Walker wouldn't mind.

"Thank you, you're an honest and good person." Walker showed a grateful expression; outside it was pitch-dark, raining, and with a black bear roaming, he didn't want to race with a black bear again.

Walker used the restroom, freshening up a bit.

Luke poured two glasses of whiskey, handing one to him.

"Thank you."

"You're tired, you can go straight to sleep.

If you find it boring, you can also watch a movie with me."

"What movie?"

"Saw VIII."

"Uh... I'm quite tired, will drink a bit then head to bed."

"OK."

Luke drank his whiskey and watched the movie by himself, not discussing the topic of treasure hunting further with Walker.

This topic is quite sensitive; if you ask, the other person might not want to talk.

Out of courtesy, they tell you, and it makes them uncomfortable.

If they don't tell you, it leaves you uncomfortable.

So Luke chose not to ask any more. After all, he came out to unwind, and he wasn't particularly interested in so-called treasure hunting.

The night passed without conversation.

The next morning, Luke got up early.

The rain had stopped, and the post-rain air was especially refreshing. Luke stepped out of the RV, the breeze brushing his face, inhaling the fresh air.

Isn't this one of life's pleasures?

The purpose of working hard was precisely for these moments of tranquility.
