Los Angeles Legendary Sleuth

Chapter 301: Herding Ducks

By 3 p.m., the bank had completed the crime scene investigation.

All 26 hostages had given their statements, but they yielded few valuable clues.

After an audit, the bank reported a loss of $12.7 million, with the remaining $2 million consisting of consecutive new bills.

Seventy-six safe deposit boxes were breached, and their contents emptied.

Though the usage of bank safe deposit boxes is not widespread domestically, in the United States it is very high, leading to a high demand for safe deposit boxes in banks near Chinese communities.

Having acquired the gold coins, Luke considered storing them in a bank safe deposit box, but now it seemed that even banks were not secure.

As Luke had suspected, not many valuable clues were found at the scene.

The tracking team sent by Anthony returned empty-handed; the Los Angeles sewer system was extensive and maze-like, with filthy and foul-smelling sewage that greatly complicated the tracking effort.

Someone suggested using police dogs to track, but Anthony cursed them out, blaming bad luck for running into a dead end.

Despite appearing confident in front of reporters, Anthony was under considerable pressure.

The robbers were professional and cunning, and it was unclear whether they would strike again.

Anthony discussed with Luke, and they decided to pursue separate leads: Anthony would investigate the potential clues linked to the safe deposit boxes.

Luke was charged with investigating the robbers' movements prior to the heist.

...

Although the bank was not privy to the contents placed in safe deposit boxes, it still followed its own management procedures.

Anthony suspected the robbers had scouted the bank beforehand, as anyone wanting to access the vault would need to rent a safe deposit box.

Anthony focused on customers who had recently rented safe deposit boxes.

Next were customers who had recently visited the vault to access their boxes.

The third line of inquiry was bank employees, not ruling out the possibility of an inside job.

After investigating, Anthony found that in the last five days, seven people had opened safe deposit boxes; one of them, a man named Jerrang Kazafei, caught his attention.

Name, Jerrang Kazafei

Gender, Male

Date of Birth, March 2, 1988

Phone number, 626 876 3423

Address, 302 Morel Community

Social Security number, 623-53-4322

Criminal Record, Theft

Anthony's instinct told him that this was their man.

He examined Jerrang Kazafei's safe deposit box and found that it too had been forced open, with no items found inside.

It was possible he had removed the contents himself, or there were never any contents to begin with.

Nearly five hours had passed since the robbers escaped the scene.

Anthony immediately led his team to the suspect's home to arrest him.

...

Morel Community.

On his way there, Anthony tried to trace Jerrang Kazafei's cellphone, but it was out of contact, which only made him more certain.

Worried about startling the quarry, he didn't make a conspicuous arrival at Morel Community for the investigation but instead tactically dispersed and set up a stakeout.

From Anthony's experience, it was unlikely the suspect was at home, but there was always a chance of finding some valuable clues.

Under Anthony's direction, the FBI surrounded the suspect's house.

Whether the suspect was at home or not, they had to proceed cautiously.

At Anthony's command, the FBI agents split into two groups, storming the house from the front and back entrances.

"FBI!"

"Living room clear."

"Bathroom clear."

"Bedroom... Get down!"

Before the words were finished, an explosion erupted from the bedroom,

"Boom..."

The ground shook as half of the house collapsed.

Screams echoed from inside the house.

...

Without a vehicle in Los Angeles, getting around is next to impossible. Luke surmised the robbers most likely arrived by car and began searching for suspicious vehicles near the bank entrance.

By analyzing nearby vehicles, Luke quickly identified a suspect vehicle, a black Ford SUV.

After checking the license plate, it turned out to be a cloned car.

Next, Luke launched an investigation into the vehicle.

The investigation was mainly in two directions. The first was to review surveillance footage to see where the car had come from, which might lead to the robbers' hideout.

Luke contacted the deputy leader, leaving the task of checking road surveillance to him and Matthew.

The other direction was to investigate the identity of the car owner, which Luke took upon himself.

The license plate is merely the surface-level identifier of a car; every car has unique markers, like the engine serial number.

Luke had someone open the car to check, only to find that the engine serial number had been filed away and other identification marks were also tampered with.

Luke speculated two possibilities for the car: one, it was a stolen vehicle turned into a 'hot car.'

Two, it belonged to the robber themselves, who had removed all marks to prevent being traced back via the car.

Depending on the situation, different investigative methods were necessary.

If it were a hot car, finding the car owner might not be as significant, as they would be unlikely to offer helpful clues.

The best approach would be to trace the car's origins through the black market and used car dealers.

This was Blackie's specialty.

If not a hot car, then it would indeed belong to the robber. To rule out this possibility, Luke needed to quickly discover the car owner's identity.

When a car is stolen, the owner reports it to the police, who record it in their files. By matching the car make, color, brand, and condition, it is possible to locate the owner.

Then, Luke began to assign tasks. Blackie and Jackson formed one team, tasked with investigating the black market for cars.

Raymond and Jenny were to check the records for stolen vehicles...
