Los Angeles Legendary Sleuth

Chapter 454: Bad Guys (Part 3)

Luke said, "We're still not clear about the oil thief's motives. On the bright side, it could just be a prank.

On the downside, someone might be trying to stop us from treasure hunting. Every minute we delay, they could find the treasure first."

Walker said, "Without the tricycle motorcycle, it might take us twice as long to reach the canyon floor, and the area is quite large, making it inconvenient to search.

Should we contact the canyon manager to bring some gasoline?"

Luke said, "We've driven further west, getting farther from the rest area. It's hard for the canyon manager to get here quickly."

Morris Dawan suggested, "How about I stay here, wait for the canyon manager to bring the gas, and you two go treasure hunting in the RV. I'll meet up with you once the gas is delivered."

Walker asked, "Can you ride a motorcycle with your foot injury?"

"It hurts a bit to walk, but riding a motorcycle isn't much affected."

Walker nodded, "I think that's a good idea. Luke, what do you think?"

Luke didn't speak. After observing around the motorcycle, he said, "We didn't hear any noise last night, suggesting that the person who stole the gasoline didn't have a vehicle. That big barrel of oil couldn't have been taken far.

I suspect he might have hidden the gasoline nearby."

Walker said, "He could also have taken the gasoline to his transport to carry it away."

"Let's look around. If we can't find it, we'll think of something else." Following Luke's suggestion, Morris Dawan stayed to guard the campsite while Luke and Walker searched the area for signs of the oil barrel.

Luke and Walker searched outward from the motorcycle as their center. After walking some distance, Walker couldn't help but ask, "What do you think is causing the trouble in the canyon?

First, that black guy's gasoline was stolen, then Morris Dawan got caught in a bear trap. Now the gasoline from the tricycle motorcycle has also been stolen. Could it be the same person behind all this?"

Luke stared at the ground and said, "I checked around the motorcycle; I only saw footprints from the three of us."

Walker said, "Could the oil thief have stepped in a place that doesn't leave footprints easily?"

Luke shook his head, "The ground around the motorcycle is muddy. Any step would leave marks; it's just a matter of how deep the footprints are."

Walker understood, "You're suspecting Morris Dawan of stealing from himself? Why would he do such a thing?"

"Maybe he thinks a third of the treasure isn't enough and wants more," Luke speculated.

Walker frowned and asked back, "Do you have any evidence?"

Luke pointed at the ground, "Do you see the footprints here? They closely match the tread of his shoes."

"That doesn't necessarily mean they're his." Walker sighed, though in his heart, he tended to agree with Luke's judgment, he was reluctant to accept it.

Though he hadn't known Morris Dawan for long, Walker got along well with him, which made him feel a bit regretful.

Luke waved his hand, signaling Walker to stop. He quickly walked forward, crouched on the ground, and used his phone to shine a light under a rock crevice, then reached in to pull out a white oil barrel.

"Wow... truly a detective from Los Angeles." Walker's feelings were mixed, "Can you confirm that this footprint belongs to Morris Dawan?"

Luke didn't answer immediately. Instead, he found a clearer set of footprints nearby and used an identification card on them.

[Shoes, thick-soled, cross-patterned boots

Gender, male

Height, 180-185CM

Weight, 80-85 pounds

Age, between 58 to 63 years old.

Walking posture, carrying a heavy object on the left side, right foot injured]

Luke had a good impression of Morris Dawan, but this footprint identification perfectly matched his physical characteristics, clearly indicating his suspicion.

"Indeed, it should be him."

Walker took a deep breath, "What would be his purpose for hiding the gasoline?"

Luke speculated, "He probably has accomplices. Maybe they're searching for the treasure, while he's stalling us to buy them more time."

"What a scoundrel!"
