I Swear I'm Not A Dark Lord!

§029 A Letter

Dear Father,

I heard about Brother a few days ago, and I am still shocked. I only knew him as a picture, yet I feel a loss where there once was an expectation of knowing him. His heroics have been in the paper, as have yours, which makes it even harder to believe. I wish I had more for you than empty condolences, but you have them all the same.

Brother's death has stimulated the Augbergs to move to capture Mourne. They tried to discredit me, without success. Jane thinks they hope you will never return from Grisham's Wall, and marry one of their own to Sister.

You probably heard this from Jane already, but the governor appointed me Proxy Legate Mourne. If it sounds ridiculous to assign a township to a ten-year-old, I agree. Jane thinks it's a ploy to constrain the Augbergs, but it's also a money grab. My bounties are yielding windfalls, and more of it stays in provincial coffers if I'm acting as the principal of a township as opposed to a private citizen.

I made my first significant magic item: a satchel whose capacity expands as I add more mana to it. It's only at 20x right now, but it should grow handsomely over time. It's blood-bound, of course, and has some other handy features. It should last for a good long while. I hope to apply these skills to the betterment of Mourne.

Better fortunes, Father.
