Daggat continued shouting praises of himself and the party even as Hunter's drake form faded away. The crowd was mostly accepting of his attempts at ingraining himself as their hero. Psychic aura's and all that. Ketil seemed more resigned than anything else, and he took charge of organizing people.
Daggat's golden visage faded as he descended from his ogrish stage. Anath was already harvesting the core of the crone.
At the edge of the town center was Willow and his party, each watching wide-eyed and confused, Willow, Tips, Bragg, and three large wolves. One of them was, presumably, Ivory.
"Come on guys, want you to meet some folk." He said to his companions. Daggat trusted Ketil to deal with the humans.
Willow, a taller goblin with faintly blue skin, slowly readied a trident as he approached. He was an impressive mass of scars with a very goblinesque asymmetrical chin. To other goblins, he was the kind of handsome that started fights.
The others did the same. Bragg wore armor and brandished a hammer. His features were hidden from view from a thick helmet. Tips, a female goblin, knocked an arrow. The wolves growled, and then one of them stopped and tilted its head.
"Whoa, is that any way to greet a friend?" Daggat asked.
"D- Daggat?" Willow asked. He lowered his trident a tad.
"I got taller."
"What happened here?" Bragg asked.
"Ah. A crone. Terrible business, but we took care of it." Daggat took notice that the other's aura was equal to his own. Except for one of the wolves. It was still significantly more powerful.
"You, uh, you look like you've done well for yourself." Willow said, "Sorry I didn't come back sooner."
Daggat waved a hand dismissively, "Eh, we wouldn't have gone with you anyway. Oh, you know Klaw, he got a LOT taller. This is Hunter, Anath, and the rest of my party are on the way."
The adventurers were eyeing Hunter nervously.
Bragg spoke what was on their mind, "That… ogre-"
"Is not feral. No worries." Daggat said. They seemed to calm down. Hunter gave them a wave.
"We found Calion's house. What happened?" Tips asked.
"Oh, the usual. Old boss tracked us down with an army, we killed them, he killed ME, I burned down the house by accident. You know how these things go. The adventuring life, right?"
"Calion?" Willow asked, hesitantly.
"He went to go live with his daughter. The man's well. For now."
"Good… good. I think we might need somewhere to talk. More privately."
Several humans were giving the group of monsters wary looks. It was understandable, they've had a bad week.
"We can talk in the inn… no that burned down. Ketil's house? Eh… probably not to push our luck. You know what, let's just go outside the walls."
Zuss and Elyndris met with the party after leaving the walls. They went and stood around the large, twisted tree. It was an appropriate meeting place.
The wolves sniffed at the party. Anath had an apprehensive, hopeful look on her face. One of the wolves inspected her curiously, then dropped into a low play-bow position and wagged her tail.
Anath's eyes lit up while she gasped in joy. Immediately, she started to play with the wolf.
"So, what's new with you guys?" Klaw asked as they settled in.
"Well, hold on, what happened to you two? You were gremlins half a year ago." Willow said.
Daggat gave them a short rundown of their adventures so far. With a tad more emphasis on his own heroics, of course. He didn't dwell on too many details, no need to reveal everything he had accomplished. He glanced over at Anath. She was aggressively petting the wolf with all four arms, scrunchy its face and making little cutesy noises. The wolf was in a state of pure bliss. Daggat noticed a small, shadowy arm sneakily petting the wolf as well.
"Hey, Ivory, you know anything about altars?" Daggat asked.
The wolf politely backed away from Anath, then smoothly transformed into her humanoid form.
"A bit. Also, hello!" She said.
"Your… a… person?" Anath looked horrified.
"Well, I've got this altar. It wants to talk to its altar keeper who is a wild man who lives in the trees but is too scared to come into the village. Any tips?"
"Forget the altar. Daggat, we need to get these people out of here. You need to know, the head takers-"
"They've spread throughout the forest slaughtering every village in their path, devouring the dead, and growing in levels at an unprecedented rate. A quarter of the army is milling around this side of the woods. Yeah, yeah."
"How do you know that?" Bragg asked with a tinge of suspicion in his voice.
"Cause I asked." Klaw shrugged.
"Then we need to leave, now!"
"Relax, it's fine," Zuss said.
"We can destroy them with ease." Elyndris hissed.
"I'm looking forward to it." Klaw chuckled.
"Are you people insane?" Tips asked.
"A little bit," Anath said, still dazed.
"I'm serious. You have no idea how dangerous the goblins have become."
Daggat chuckled. Klaw, Elyndris, and Zuss joined, creating a grim quartet of monstrous mirth.
"Willow, my friend. I don't think you understand how dangerous WE'VE become. With a bit of help from Ivory, I don't think we'll even need walls." Daggat scratched his bandaged arm. It had begun peeling excessively. "Besides, where would we go?"
Willow gave him a serious look, "Despite your regenisis, you are still a child. Don't underestimate this."
"Why are you a goblin?" Daggat asked.
"What?"
"You should be stronger than you are. Why aren't you?"
Bragg stepped forward, "you don't know how strong we are. We're not above showing a runt why he should respect his elders."
Daggat gave them each an appraising look. "Fourteen, fourteen, thirteen." For some reason, Tips was at a lower level than the other two. He pointed at the wolves, then at Ivory, "Eight, eight, and… this one's tricky. Twenty?"
"Wow, spot on. How'd you do it?" Ivory said, her tail wagged in excitement.
"My point is, Willow. Why aren't you level fifteen yet? You've been at this a lot longer than we have. Adventuring, I mean."
"It takes time to gain experience safely. It is simply a reality."
"So, what, you've only fought when you are sure to win?" Asked Klaw.
"It's what smart adventurers do." Tips said.
"What is the point of fighting then? You might as well not bother." Klaw scoffed.
"I… can't think of the last time we fought something weaker than us. Except that paladin." Zuss mused.
"What paladin?" Klaw snarled. Then his eyes looked at something in the middle of the air. He got a message.
"Indeed. WE don't fight the weak. Every test for us has been life or death. And every time, we came out on top. Stronger. No matter what happens, we just keep getting stronger. Like goblin teeth. Knock us out, we keep coming back."
"Yeah, is that why you are missing an ear?" Willow said.
"Yeah. I died in that fight, but I STILL came out the better. That's why I'm your equal. In terms of levels. We are all level fourteen as well."
"That's arrogance. Arrogance will get you killed. You're still my junior in terms of experience."
"Yeah, well, I think technically I might be a lord, so. There's that."
"Uhm, this sounds like it might become a fight. We can't afford to not be friends." Hunter said. His deep, soft voice pummeled the tension away.
"Look, I'm just saying, don't underestimate us, is all." Daggat continued.
"Still. Come with us back to Brinehaven. It's a long journey, but we can avoid the bulk of the enemy forces."
"What about the humans?" Daggat asked.
"Forget them. I came back to get you, Calion, and Klaw." Willow said.
"Can't" Klaw said.
"Why not? You catch feelings?" Bragg asked.
"Nah. I'm a paladin. Have to protect the weak."
"You see our problem," Daggat added.
Tips turned towards Willow, "Then let's go. They don't need us."
Daggat shared a look with his party. Then shrugged. Probably not.
"Nah. I can't just turn my back on them," Willow told her, then he stood eye to eye with Daggat, "Look, I'm not going to let you throw your life away. What can I do to help?"
Daggat grinned at him, "Well, first, let's talk about what we're going to do with the humans."
"Do we stay or do we go," Elyndris said to no one in particular.
"Problem is, we don't know how far away they are," Daggat said.
"Well… I don't know where we can run to with so many people." Ivory said.
"The manor, obviously," Zuss said.
"That place… isn't safe," Bragg whispered.
"Ah, it's fine. You've got to try the bath." Daggat said.
"No, they are right. That place is evil. We must hold here." Willow said.
Daggat lifted an eyebrow. "What… exactly, was your experience in the manor?"
"It was REALLY scary. The furniture moved and the place itself spoke to us." Ivory shivered.
"It's haunted by a powerful spirit," Willow said.
"Ah, that's just Al. He's alright. Didn't he tell you where we were?"
"It came to us in a dream," Bragg said.
"You came here because of a dream?" Zuss asked skeptically.
"It was a persuasive dream," Tips added.
"Well, it's fine. That's my house. It has good walls." Daggat said.
"What are you talking about?" Willow asked, shaking his head.
"He claims he has paperwork. I've never seen it." Klaw said.
"You can't read," Zuss snapped at him.
"Neither can you!"
"Please don't argue in front of the other adventurers," Hunter said. They obliged but still glared at each other.
"The manor is all well and good. The problem is, that some of us are still wounded. The humans especially. It's bad. I am not sure they can travel the distance." Elyndris added.
"So, we make a stand here." Bragg said, "Who needs to live to see another day anyway."
"Actually, I have an idea for that." Daggat scratched his arm, "Gotta chat with a friend of mine."
"My best guess is Hogo has close to a hundred goblins, all level thirteen or so. It's likely he has more mercs with him, though. Orcs and wargs." Klaw said.
"They aren't that much weaker than all of you," Ivory said.
"Well… they aren't clever like we are," Daggat added. "And we've a trick or two."
"Fine. But, if we don't die, I want the goblin's ears." Willow said.
"Woah, woah," Zuss said quickly, "We have quests too."
"You get a third." Said Elyndris.
"A third?!" Bragg yelled.
"Fine, half," Daggat said. "Let's go chat with Ketil. See what we have to work with."
They all traveled back to the village as a group. Pote, Oswine, Pat, and Ketil headed the recovery of the village. Most of the village was wounded in one way or another. A bonfire was lit, and a vacant-eyed Keaton was tending it.
Hunter excused himself to assist with the wounded, while Daggat and the others introduced Ketil to the Silver Wolf adventurers.
Only around forty of the humans were in fighting condition.
At Daggat's insistence, the monsters were permitted to stay in Desmond's old home, as it was the only building left large enough to house them all.
The crew spent some time getting to know the newcomers once they left. They called themselves the Silver Wolves and hailed from the Silver Wolf tribe. The wise wolves had paired with Willow and Tips and were just as intelligent. A process that was unique to the wise wolves. It was similar to a more specialized party system for a rider and a wolf. Ivory had the same option, but she had never chosen to become bound to a goblinoid as her friends had.
"Hey, Willow," Daggat said as the monsters were finding nooks and crannies to sleep in, "So, we're headed to Brinehaven after this. Wanna come?"
"We would head back anyway."
"Good good. Know what you're going to evolve into? I want to know my options."
"What do you mean?"
"When this is all over. I bet we will hit level fifteen. That's an evolution, right?"
"Ah, yeah. Well. I plan to take to the sea. Find a spirit there."
"A spirit?"
"You don't know about spirits, do you?"
Daggat shook his head. "I've heard it mentioned, but please, do enlighten me."
"To reach the third tier of monster evolutions, you must track down a spirit and challenge it. Most monsters don't survive. Can't level up unless you get their mark."
"How do you find them?"
"They tend to linger in sacred, influential, or interesting places. They come and go. One will call to you. Or, so I've heard."
"Hmm… good to know."
Another thing to find, another thing to do. Daggat added "find a spirit" to his ever-growing list of things to do. He hoped the enemy was at least a few days away. So, so much to do.
