Zuss raised a hand, "I suppose I can go next. I have two to spend."
"Any idea what direction you want to take it?" Daggat asked.
"Want to see if you can turn your ears into hands, too?" Klaw asked.
Zuss turned a shadow into a stone, then threw it at him. He didn't react even as it bounced off his skull.
"The core biotraits are powerful. I want to get one of them."
"Any in mind?" Anath asked.
Zuss squirmed from all the attention on her. Her eyes darted to Hunter for a moment, "Well, a lot of my upgrades increase my reaction speed and ability to move. But I can't move very fast. I want to change that. Shadow Step."
"That could work well, especially when you are fighting in a forest. A lot of shadows." Daggat said.
She nodded, then made the purchase. Shadow Step would allow her to move more quickly while in a shadow. The upgrades it offered her were Shadow Surf, which allowed her to glide across shadows even more rapidly, Sticky Shade, which allowed her to grip shadows to climb, and Void Drift, which reduced the effect of gravity while she was in the dark.
In the end, she opted for shadow surf.
"How does it-" Klaw began before Zuss slipped away.
She dashed, sliding along the shadows like a minnow in a stream. It was hard to follow her.
"You are going to be a terror on any battlefield," Daggat laughed.
Stopping was another story. She hit the edge of a shadow like a ledge and stumbled a few steps.
"I've taken the liberty of looking at the rest of your options," The Assistant said.
Zuss raised a hand, "No need. I know what is next. Shadow Smith upgrade. Partial Shade."
"What's it do?" Hunter asked while she made the choice.
"Before, I could only make one shadow object at a time. Now, I can split up my shadow, depending on its depth and size."
"Depth?" Daggat asked.
"Shadow Core things, you wouldn't get it. Watch." She scampered up a startled Hunter, then jumped off. She spun through the air, wisps of shadow coalescing into all four of her hands. Then she threw four knives at a nearby wall and managed two more before she landed.
Only two actually hit the wall.
"I'll… uh, need practice." She said.
"Wonderful! Now, how's that Altar Keeper thing work?" Daggat asked.
Zuss walked over to the altar. "There is a button here… Ah, see it?"
Daggat entered the status void. A screen he had never seen hovered over where the Altar would have been. It was like the party perk screen. Lists of perks with a price in tokens.
"It can summon or repel nearby monsters, list the monsters within a certain radius, display the strongest creature slain… a few others. It seems to be tied to a community. So, we'd have to get it to the manor."
"I wonder what the questing altar can do. Hold on, I've got to send a message." Daggat said. He opened his private messages to Alfred.
Daggat: <Would you be upset if I killed your dad?>
The reply came back quickly.
Alfred: <… Why?>
Daggat: <I want his altar keeper status.>
Alfred: <I don't think I can be upset. Do as you will, he's not my father.>
"Klaw, let's go over your stuff next," Daggat said while scratching at his arm. It itched like mad, he was about ready to chop it off.
"Sure, I got a biotrait and a skill point."
"Going for a core upgrade as well?" Anath asked.
"Nah. Personally, I want to max out my claws. But I have to use the altar, or it's a waste, right? Here's the thing. I can control my heartbeat, close off, and move my arteries and veins. But, that's not so useful if I can't push my heart past its limit without hurting myself."
"Dense Organs?" Elyndris asked.
"Absolutely."
"Careful, the brain is an organ. You can't afford a smaller one." Daggat said with a grin.
Klaw flipped him off with a single claw, then made the selection. His gut shrank in, as if he hadn't eaten in weeks.
"Hey, the little fucker was right. I can combine Dense Muscle Fibers, Bone, and Organs into Dense Body. But… this is weird. It didn't give me the upgrade for it."
The Assistant floated over, "Perhaps you have to accept or deny the synergy first? If you accept, does the upgrade transfer to the synergy? Give it a try."
"Dag?" Klaw asked.
Daggat shrugged, "Well, it will be harder to get upgrades for the biotraits. But, then again, upgrading them all is going to be expensive. Might as well combine, then upgrade that."
"You will be less… dense than others who reached the apex in all three before synergy. But, they wouldn't have many other points." Elyndris said.
Klaw shrugged, "Fuck it. We can get one of those fancy potions to fix it. Maybe."
Klaw's fur darkened, and his teeth changed into a black metallic color. Other than that, there wasn't much of a difference. He lifted his arms and walked around a bit.
"That feels weird. I feel heavy. If any of you went this route, I don't think you could move." He stopped and looked at a status screen, "Yup. I get the upgrade. Let's see, Great Mass, which will make me even heavier. Anchor, which makes me harder to move. And Reflexive Leverage. That one shifts my weight depending on what I am lifting."
"Anchor could help out when fighting something big," Daggat offered.
"Yeah… but I have an idea." Klaw made a selection, then walked over to a long log that had been flattened into a seat. He grasped it by one end, using his claws to grip, and lifted it. The entire log was almost ten feet long and a few feet wide. Klaw grunted, then lifted the massive thing like a club. He swung it, whipping up the air.
Then he let it drop and grinned satisfyingly.
"Wow! Did it make you stronger, too?" Anath asked.
"Nah. I was always that strong. Thing is, you can't lift something heavier than you are without a brace. If I tried that without the upgrade, I'd tip over before I'd get it off the ground."
"You fight with your claws, though." Daggat pointed out.
"Yeah. Now, I can really dig in against big things. If I had iron skin, too, I'd be unstoppable."
"Oh, that reminds me," Zuss said. She started pulling bits of armor out of the inventory system. "Got you iron skin."
His nose wrinkled at it, "I think I'll give it a wash first. Then have the dwarves size it. Thanks!"
Klaw knew what he was going to spend the skill point on. Wind Slash. He wanted to be acle to better use the ability, so he opted for the upgrade Razor Slash, which allowed it to do more damage.
"Elyndris, do you need any assistance?" Daggat asked.
"Nah. Gonna change my build anyway. You're next."
"Well, I have thought long and hard on my upgrades. I believe it will enhance my combat capability to match, or even exceed, those of Anath or Klaw."
"Good luck with that," Klaw muttered.
"Huh?" Anath said, looking up. She was distracted, playing with strands of web.
"Behold!" Daggat said.
The assistant knew where to scroll. Telekinesis.
[You have selected Telekinesis. Accept? Yes/no]
Daggat selected yes and was immediately given three options to upgrade it. Mind Over Matter, Tactile Telekinesis, and enhanced range.
Telekinesis allowed him to telekinetically move an object with an effective strength of a quarter of his intelligence. Five strength wasn't much, but it was enough to move his spear.
He pulled the spear from the inventory and grasped it mentally. The spear was lifted in the air. He then moved it around like a fish, weaving it in and out of objects.
The sensation was similar to actually moving it. He could feel the weight of the spear, and it took mental energy to move it. He could do this for hours, but he suspected he would get tired eventually. The further he moved it away, the heavier it became. About twenty feet, he couldn't lift it.
"Ooh, fun. Can you pick me up?" Elyndris asked. Daggat tried. He was able to get a solid grasp, but couldn't move her. It was as though she were immensely heavy.
"No, I don't know why." He turned his focus onto Zuss's clothes. She yelped as he tried to lift her, but she was heavier than she should be. All he managed was to wrinkle the cloth, even though it was heavy.
"Do that again, and I will see how many shadow daggers I can fit into a goblin." She growled.
"Hmm… I wonder. Elyndris felt lighter, but not because of her size. It was like there was some resistance." Daggat had a thought and tried to move Hunter. He didn't seem to notice.
Will. Elyndris had the lowest. Hunter, the highest. Perhaps a target will reduce the attempt.
He still had the upgrade. That was an easy choice. Tactile Telekinesis. It allowed him to use telekinesis to lift and move objects he touched. Effectively replacing his strength with Intelligence. Though it was still only half of his intelligence.
This led Daggat to the next obvious choice. Mind Over Matter. This simply changed a quarter's intelligence to half intelligence for the telekinesis' strength. Consequently, it allowed Tactile Telekinesis to use his full intelligence score in place of his strength.
He grinned at the possibilities.
"Klaw, what was that you did? Lift the log? I don't think it was so hard," Daggat said.
"Not really." Klaw shrugged.
Daggat lifted the log, the same as Klaw had. He didn't need leverage when using telekinesis, it seemed. His arms shook with the effort, but Daggat supposed that was more habit than his arms actually being challenged. It was an effort, just not physical.
"What… how?" Klaw asked as Daggat swung it, then put it down.
"Turns out, you can use your intelligence to lift things.- Ah!"
Klaw had grabbed Daggat and lifted him.
"You're not so heavy," he said, putting him down.
"I don't need to counterbalance the log, I just lift it," Daggat said.
"Then, how do you put your weight into the hit?"
"I don't know. I'm going to have to do some experiments."
"Is that all?" Elyndris asked.
Daggat tried to lift her again. This time, she slowly lifted. He felt as strong as he did as a gremlin.
"Hey, put me down!"
Daggat did so, "Not done yet. I have one more point. Assistant, Hex Aura, please."
The assistant brought up the option. Daggat selected it.

Ah, about time. The skill, Condense Aura, gave him a menu that allowed him to specify how his aura worked. He turned on both Beguiling Aura and Hex Aura to work simultaneously. There was an option to choose people not affected by the aura. He made his party immune.
"Hold on… that aura. It's not… a bad luck aura, is it?" Klaw asked.
"Indeed it is!"
"Ugh… that's such a pain in the ass. I killed a guy who had that. Not fun."
"Then it won't be fun for our enemies," Elyndris chuckled.
"You know, there was something at the edge of my mind." Daggat mused, "Klaw, Zuss, you remember what it was like at the camp?"
"Unfortunately," Zuss said.
"I mean. Unlikely things happened. I fell into old pickle brine once. We always stumbled into the worst situations. Once, I was almost thrown into the stew."
"That sounds chaotic," Anath said. She had a thick strand of web and was trying to pull it apart with all four arms. She wasn't having any luck.
"What's your point?" Klaw asked.
"Well, all that stuff ended when we left. How many times have we been launched through the air since we left? It occurs to me that a bunch of goblins would have hex aura. It's a goblin biotrait."
"Huh, yeah. That's true." Zuss said.
"Just a neat tidbit. Never really gave it a thought. Anywho… that's it for the upgrades, right? We ready to take on an army?"
"Not quite." Elyndris crawled to the center of the group. "It is time I say goodbye."
"What?" Anath said with an edge of panic.
"For three days or so. For I am about to embark on a journey that none in all of history have taken before me. When I enter the state of metamorphosis, I will return changed. Stronger."
"Good luck!" Anath cheered.
"Don't pick stupid biotraits," Klaw chuckled.
"I'll take care of you, don't worry," Hunter said.
"When we next meet, I will be A FORCE OF PURE DESTRUCTION!" She began to cackle. She laughed while she crawled away, heading for an empty barrel.
Everyone was too stunned to stop her as she casually slithered into the container. Somehow, she managed to close the lid after her.
After a long moment, Hunter asked, "Do you think she remembered we might be leaving soon?"
