Goblin Teeth: A Monster Party LitRPG

115 - Multiple: The Calm

"If they don't arrive tomorrow night, then they will the next day for sure," Bragg said.

It was the next morning. Daggat, Klaw, Willow, Bragg, Ketil, and Keaton had formed a war council of sorts. They met in the warming hall, which had been cleared of corpses and blood.

"Good to know," Daggat said.

He had taken his seat upon the throne, which only served to annoy Ketil. Still, it was good to show who was in charge. Which, naturally, was Daggat. Oh sure, Pat was technically the current leader of the village. But she had been shut away. Besides, the party had become too much for Ketil to handle, and he was the only warrior they had left. Well, any warrior worth anything.

Willow yawned, "Did we have to do this so early?"

"The more time we can get, the better," Ketil said.

"Goblins are nocturnal," he grumbled.

"Alright. Let's discuss the plan. Here is what we know," Daggat began, "They number approximately three hundred. A small portion of their forces consists of mind-controlled humans. Some orcs. The rest, goblins. They are led by Hogo Brittleblade, whose capabilities are unknown to us. But the army will be slowed by the trees."

"We have a field around the village," Ketil added, "Which would make for great target practice. Keaton, they up for that?"

Keaton was no warrior, but he knew the people better than anyone else.

"Yes, mostly. Most of the people have recovered. The biggest issue is morale. We… have been through a lot in a short amount of time."

"Can you get them into the fighting spirit?" Daggat asked.

"Maybe. Even so, we take pride in our hunting skills. Goblins are a target like any other."

"I have Anath out there now, patching holes. When they do come, it's through the paths we choose." Daggat said.

"And they will run directly into my traps," Ketil said.

"Sure, if you want the humans to die," Klaw said.

"What do you mean?" Keaton asked.

"Goblins have no respect for humans, offense intended by the way," Klaw said, "They are going to push them to the front. Use them to soak up arrows."

"That's where Hunter comes in. He can eat the magic and turn them against the fuckers." Daggat said.

"So, where do you expect me to trap?"

"Behind the village, obviously," Willow said. "Classic strategy. Draw your attention, then flank."

"It's what we did with Willow," Daggat confirmed.

"You what?"

"Oh, thanks for that, by the way."

"Then we fight until they fall, or we do," Bragg said.

"Well, about that. You know goblins. They're not going to fight to the death when they could flee. If we focus a spear point on their leader, cut the head off the serpent, then they will scatter." Daggat floated a cup to his hand and took a drink of the grog.

"And who would that be, then? You?" Ketil asked.

Daggat summoned his spear, "obviously."

"You're going to die," Willow said in a sing-song voice.

"Nah, I won't let him," Klaw said.

"You will too," Bragg said.

"I won't let HIM die, see it balanced out," Daggat said.

"We need to assume their leader is a monster beyond our capability," Ketil said.

Daggat grinned like a predator, "That's what I am hoping. We have a lot of opposition. Don't we, Ketil?"

"Yes. It's not going to be easy."

"Especially without us, eh? I'm starting to think. Maybe Willow is right. We should just go."

Ketil narrowed his eyes at him, "What are you playing at?"

"I'm just saying. We don't have TOO much of a reason to fight. After all, these aren't our people. Klaw can stay and do what he must, but that's all."

Ketil's beard quivered, "You would abandon us after all that's happened? After killing our defenders? Enraging the crone into destroying their spirits!? Claiming that seat as though you deserve anything?!"

Willow looked back and forth between the two, "My party will help how we can-"

"Shush, Willow. I'm doing a thing." Daggat said.

"I don't believe it," Ketil said.

"Well, you could find out. Or, we can guarantee our help." Daggat leaned back in the chair. It was a nice chair.

The dwarf seemed to growl, "What do you want?"

Daggat summoned a golden piece of paper. A Mihr contract. "Oh, we can work something out on paper."

The next hour or so was spent crafting the contract. Ketil was shaking with fury the entire way through. But what mattered was that they came to an agreement. Daggat and his party must help the village survive the attack. They must lend aid for no less than three days afterwards if they survive. In return, Ketil would see to it that the altar would be moved to the manor, the manor would be reasonably repaired, and, for the hell of it, Hallowpines' throne would be installed in Daggat's great hall.

Then, they each scattered to work on their tasks.

Daggat practically ran to the house they were staying at. He had Zuss on a special mission. Collecting every pot or cauldron she could fit in the inventory system. It was finally time for him to squeeze a bit of alchemy work in.

Outside, he had already set up several places for fires. He blew into the tinder, igniting it with fire essence. Soon, he had over a dozen pots on fires heating up.

The ingredients he had to work with were laid out neatly on a tarp. Bone cores, death-infused bones, A particularly massive core harvested from the crone as well as her heart, shadow cores, and warg hearts, another core and heart from the dread stag, as well as its antlers.

He had managed to recover the poisonous ladle from the old inn he had set on fire as well.

Now… what to do… what to make. So many mixtures possible. He was also running low on demon dust. He would likely use all of it here. That was alright, he could buy more in town, surely?

First, he used the ladle to infuse pots with poison. He did this before adding the demon dust, to not make the essence part of the potion. Rather, the liquid would serve as the base. Through his aura sight, he discovered the ladle infused water with death, making it poisonous. It did this until it would run out of magic. According to the book of artifice, magic items would naturally absorb nearby mana until they were full.

He also discovered that a person can only use three magic items at once without them interfering with one another. He was glad he discovered this tidbit before someone tried it. Still, he was curious what would happen.

Three pots were full of pure poison. He would use it as a base, like water, to make potions. Or, rather, poisons. In one, he placed a bone core and death-infused bones. Another, he placed the dread stag's core and some death-infused bone. He wanted to try something. He dumped in a deathroot poison.

Turning to the other potions, he made a batch out of the hag's core, the dread stag's antlers, and a shadow core. This one, he was excited for. With the rest of the shadow cores and warg hearts, he made a couple of batches of Night Stalker potion.

He was running out of sources of beast essence for transformation potions. Klaw was doing his own thing and didn't want to help him. So, for now, he held onto the rest of the ingredients.

As the water came to a boil, he sprinkled most of the demon dust into the pots.

Those would take some time to start to boil and then refine. So, he focused on his arm.

It itched as it had the last few days, but in a different way. The tingling had subsided at least. He unwrapped the bandage, revealing a putrid-smelling mass of dead flesh. He grimaced and started scratching and scrubbing with a wet cloth. When he was done, the bucket was ruined, and his arm felt raw. More than that, it was visibly smaller than the other. As though it had been weakened. At least it was fully healed now.

The last thing on his craft to-do list was to focus on his new toys. Bombs. He had four. Well, one, but three empty shells. The bombs were simple. Hollow metal shells to be filled with a mixture of saltpeter, charcoal, and sulfur. He had a bag of each that he nabbed from Ketil. He wasn't sure what kind of alchemy was going on with it, but in a bowl, he mixed the correct ratios with a stick. Daggat was confident he could create or find the ingredients on his own; the notes detailed how to create the saltpeter. Luckily, he didn't have to at the moment.

He poured the mixture on a stone, then flicked in a piece of charcoal. It immediately flashed and smoked, blinding Daggat with its light.

He frowned. That didn't seem like the bombs he had read about. But… trust the process. Maybe something happened in the enclosed space of the metal shell? Either way, he wanted to test something.

Now and then, he used his telekinesis to stir the pots, making sure each had its own sticks.

First, he mixed shards of death-infused bones into some black powder and then filled two bomb shells with the mixture. He smiled to himself, imagining the little shards of death rotting his enemies. Then, his experiment. You could use water and oil to make alchemy. What about powder? Would it work? Only one way to find out. He made a larger bowl of black powder and dropped in a bone core. He then pounded it with a rock, breaking up the core a bit.

Daggat poured in the last of his demon dust onto the powder-core mixture and then stirred. He stirred, mixed, and pounded it until the core seemed to break apart.

Just then, he noticed something in his periphery. The pot, which he had placed the alchemical poison into, was boiling over, releasing a black steam.

Or… not steam. Black essence. It was spilling from the mixture, causing it to disappear. He watched as the cloud of essence was drawn away by the wind. It passed over a flying bird, which immediately dropped out of the sky.

Daggat wasn't even mad about losing the alchemy. The pot was bone dry, completely empty. Was this a way to release large amounts of essence into the air? The beginnings of infusing an entire countryside with essence?

After writing down his observations, he turned back to the black powder. It had become white. Bone white. Did it work?

He scooped a small amount onto the back of his thumb, then flicked it into a fire. It flashed, burning instantly. Where it touched the burning wood, a small shard of bone slowly blackened. Daggat cackled. His future was looking bright… and loud.

In the end, he ended with five potions labeled Bone Poison, five labeled Dread Poison, ten crone potions he called Nightmare Form, over a dozen Night Stalker potions, and the bombs. Not bad for a day's work.

As a test, he took a small sip from the Nightmare Form Potion.

Once the effect ended, he couldn't stop grinning. He REALLY looked forward to the battle.

Klaw, Bragg, and Pote were working in Ketil's workshop. The dwarf was helping adjust the armor to better fit Klaw.

"I don't think you need any padding," Pote said, "Your fur is fluffy enough to pad it."

"My fur is… what?" Klaw growled.

"Uh… I mean… thick." He stammered.

Klaw sneered. He didn't know what Daggat saw in the dwarf. He had taken a shine to him for some reason. To Klaw, he was just a sniveling bookworm.

Ah, that must have been it. Daggat didn't snivel, but he was almost constantly reading.

"Calves are a bit tight," Klaw said.

Pote removed them and started working to widen the straps they had replaced.

"There's a trick to using it," Bragg said. "Try not to take direct hits. It's best to deflect hits, rather than to take them square on."

"Right," Klaw said.

"I think I recognise this armor," Pote said.

"Oh?"

"A paladin and a monk came by a few months ago. He was really friendly. This looks like his. Where did you get it?"

"My sister pulled it off of a paladin she killed."

"Ah."

After some time, Klaw asked, "Did… the paladin mention anything about being a paladin?"

"Like what?"

"I don't know. Stuff like… honor. Like, what does that even mean? I can't attack someone I know is going to attack me soon, but I CAN attack someone mind-controlled. But I can't walk away from people needing my help, but I can torture people. You get me? Doesn't make sense."

Pote gulped from the torture comment, "I don't know. But, he said, he came from Brinehaven. Maybe there are more paladins there to ask."

Bragg peered at the armor's design. "There are a few paladins in Brinehaven. They work with the guard and generally hang around one of the altars. Come to think of it… the armor does look familiar."

"I'll have to check them out," He slapped Pote on the shoulder, causing him to stumble, "Good call. Maybe you are alright."

"Uh… thanks?" Pote said, picking up the next piece of armor.

Once the war council was done, the wounded were moved into the warming house. It was central and sturdy. The only place to protect them. Hunter helped move people in, along with Keaton.

Hunter had noted how each human seemed to fear him when he first interacted with them. He didn't blame them. He was a monster, after all. More than that, he was an ogre monster. In most circumstances, that meant he had gone feral. Ogres were loved as much as they were feared.

That was why personal hygiene was so important. It was what separated civil ogres from feral ones. But, as an oni, he couldn't pass off as civil.

Though as he interacted with them, fed them stew, gave them blankets, he noticed their scowls soften. They smiled more when they saw him. Even began calling out to him by name. Even Pat, who was now recovering from labor, softened to him. Hopefully, all went well with the woman. It was an inauspicious time to give birth.

Not all warmed to him. Many hated him. They spat and threw things when he came too near. Blaming him and his friends for how things turned out. He didn't blame them, of course. It was a little bit their fault.

He felt something tug at his pant leg. It was Holly, one of the children. They had warmed up to him first, much to the horror of the parents. They had a knack for seeing beyond the skin. It didn't take long for the adults to trust him enough to play with them, and soon he was practically a wet nurse.

She lifted her arms up, asking to be carried. He obliged, lifting her onto his shoulder. She hugged the side of his head.

"You look scared." She whispered into his ear.

"I am. It's okay to be scared, sometimes."

"Adults aren't supposed to be scared."

"I'm not an adult."

"You're too big to be a kid."

He smiled sadly. Holly had lost her parents. She was alone and vulnerable. Hunter was only a few years older than her. It didn't feel like it. He hadn't felt like a kid in what felt like an eternity.

That was why he helped these people. Because he knew what it was like to lose your childhood. He would do anything to keep her from losing that innocence completely. He might be too late. Still, he would fight if he had to. To protect her and the other children. All of the humans, even the ones who hated him.

Anath, Ivory, and Zuss were working on the outskirts of the village. Bobby had effectively made a wall out of large trees. Anath was a bit worried it would affect the village's day-to-day. But, for now, it was a boon. Where there were gaps, she spread strength-infused strands of webs.

Zuss was scouting different paths, leaving markers for Anath to place string to trip up and further slow the goblins.

While she worked, Ivory cast a spell on the webs, strengthening them even further.

"So, you travel far to get here?" the wolf-girl asked.

"Just a few days. We practically just stepped out the door."

"No, I meant to get to the forest."

Anath gave her an odd look, "I was born here. Never left it."

"Oh. I just assumed, being an elf… and carrying an elven sword."

"Technically not an elf. I think. But, my sword's elven?"

"Uh huh."

"Neat."

Anath was still a bit awkward around Ivory since the petting incident.

"So, why do you travel with goblins?" Anath asked.

"My people, the wise wolves, and theirs have an alliance of a sort. Goes back generations. I was chosen to defend them. My people got a goblin, too."

"Like a trade?"

"Yeah, sort of."

"But why you?"

"Politics. My dad is the chief, and I was the highest level."

"You're a PRINCESS!?"

This tale has been unlawfully lifted without the author's consent. Report any appearances on Amazon.

Ivory barked in laughter, "I guess I am. Why do you travel with goblins? Tale for tale."

"Umm… well, it's a long story."

"We have time."

Anath gave her a quick story of the last six months or so. She used the opportunity to rant a bit about living with goblinoids. The manners, the manipulation, the disregard for a clean environment, and the general feeling of bloodthirst they gave off every now and then. Ivory listened politely, casting her spell wordlessly.

"And… now we're here. So, that's the story."

"You know, when you get to Brinehaven, you could find another party."

Anath turned to her suddenly, "What?!"

"If you aren't happy, I mean. We could even interview you, if you'd like. But Tips is picky."

"I don't want to LEAVE them!"

"Whatever you want. Though there are more experienced adventurers, if that's what you want to do."

Anath's many limbs drooped a bit, "Well, there isn't anything else I really CAN do."

"Surely not."

"What, am I going to open up a shop? Farm a field? I don't have any skills other than killing things. Or cutting them up afterwards."

"Hmm… yeah. That would be a problem. Most folk focus their skill points into their crafts. Lot of useless warriors when not at war."

"Well, I like fighting things anyway. It's fun."

Ivory cocked her head to one side, "Yeah. It is. Hurts though, if you mess up."

"I know. Trust me."
