Since this was a human city, it was easy for the humans to open the gates.
At the same time, there were former guards of this capital city among the humans that came as volunteers.
So they naturally knew where the gate controls were and what they had to do to open these gates quickly.
Once the gates were open, the ones that had been waiting outside the gates charged in immediately.
It was like a wave of humans that suddenly charged into the capital city that the demons just couldn't do anything against.
This was made worse by the fact that they were still affected by the poison that the humans used. That meant that their bodies were still numb and they couldn't move properly.
So in the end, they couldn't stop the charging cavalry that ran into the capital.
With this cavalry leading the way, the humans were able to create a space for themselves around the gate that they had taken.
The demons had no choice but to retreat, but the humans didn't follow them.
After all, it wasn't as if this was a safe place for them.
Once I came through the gate, I looked around the capital before saying, "Good job taking the gate. All that's left is to clear out the rest of this place."
As I was saying this, I couldn't help taking a step back away from the people that were reporting in.
After all, the stench that surrounded them was a bit strong. Though it wasn't as if I was blaming them for this stench since I was the one that was responsible for causing them to be covered in this stench.
It was all because of the order that I gave them.
The reason that these soldiers had suddenly appeared out of thin air to surround the demons earlier was all because they had taken a special route. This was a route that had allowed them to avoid being detected by the demons.
After all, it was a route that normal people wouldn't have thought of taking.
It was the kind of route that one would only take if they were crazy.
Since this capital was a developed city, that meant that there was a proper sewage system in this place. This sewage system was one that led to all the different places in the capital.
But the fact that this city had been taken over by the demons meant that the sewage system had been completely ignored.
It wasn't as if the demons would actually use the sewage system and it wasn't as if they would do anything to maintain it.
As such, there was all the sewage that had been gathering there the entire time. It meant that they would have to go through piled up sewage just to reach where they wanted to go.
There was no doubt that this was a very hard task, but they did it in the end.
Still, that didn't mean that they weren't covered in this smell.
Seeing that I moved away from them, there were bitter smiles that appeared on their faces.
I just said with a reassuring smile, "All of you have greatly contributed to this mission and have helped us prevent many casualties if we had fought the demons head on."
It wasn't as if they didn't recognize this, it was just that when the reports went in, they would have preferred that this part be left out. No one wanted to be remembered as the group that had walked through sewage to ambush the enemy.
"Don't worry, I'll make sure that it remains hidden." I had already guessed what they were thinking, so I comforted them by saying this.
The smoke that we used wasn't one that dissipated that easily and with the wind behind us, it had already spread all over the capital city. That meant that most of the demons had already been affected by the poison in the smoke and weren't able to fight at their full power.
That was how the cavalry were able to sweep through the remaining demons in this city.
As the cavalry pushed forward, more and more of the city was reclaimed.
It was just that as that happened, more and more of the demons were pushed into a rapidly shrinking area. It wasn't as if we were defeating all of the demons, it was just that we were pushing most of them back.
After all, it was dangerous to fight in these streets with all the buildings in the way.
We were trying to reclaim the capital while the demons were just looting it.
With different goals, we naturally had different things restraining us.
It wasn't as if we could destroy the capital while fighting like the demons could.
Once the demons had been pushed to a certain point, it wasn't as if they would keep retreating. Once they were pushed back far enough, they would have no choice but to fight back.
The demons were retreating to the one part of the capital that was easier to defend compared to the other parts. It was the former noble district of the capital where the castle was.
The inner walls that surrounded the former noble district were gone, but at least there was still the castle for them to hide in.
The cavalry didn't chase once the demons reached the castle, but it wasn't as if they left gaps for the demons. With the infantry that arrived afterwards, the castle filled with demons was completely surrounded.
Now it turned into a castle siege to take down these demons.
"Do you really think that you can get all of us in here? Even if you try to weaken us with poison, you humans won't be able to do anything!"
The demons tried provoking us since they knew that this was the only chance that they had, but we didn't fall for it at all.
Rather, I knew what the situation inside of the castle was, so it wasn't as if I didn't know how to deal with them.
