Hero or Villain, Both

Chapter 307: What are his true intentions?

"What is this mission that you're assigning me?" I couldn't help asking in a confused voice when I was summoned.

In front of me wasn't just Viscount Denoir who was my superior, but also several other ministers and even King Abel XIV.

This was the kind of meeting that I didn't seem to fit into at all.

But here I was, summoned by Viscount Denoir to this meeting.

Of course there was only one reason that I would be called to a meeting like this and it would be related to my job. It was clear that they had some kind of high level mission that they were giving me.

I was just wondering just how difficult this would be.

"Baron Yulian, you should sit down first before we discuss this."

I was caught off guard once more since it was King Abel XIV that said this.

It really didn't seem like this was the kind of place where he would personally step forward, but he was the one that was personally leading this meeting.

So I sat down in the seat that was left open for me, but I was still confused as to what was going on.

After sitting down, there were several things that were brought out for me to read.

I looked at them skeptically, but I soon found that there was something familiar on these pages.

This was a report on Rothchild and the Grand Shopping Mall.

When I saw this, I couldn't help being even more confused about what was going on.

"I don't know if you're aware of the things that you've just read, but you should familiarize yourself with these things. After all, the mission that you're about to be assigned is related to this." King Abel XIV said with a smile.

I couldn't help being surprised by this once more, but I threw those useless thoughts away as I focused on what King Abel XIV was about to say.

There was no other choice since this was a matter that involved one of my avatars.

Seeing that I had this serious look on my face, King Abel XIV gave an approving nod before saying, "It seems like you've gotten yourself quite the successor?"

This was directed at Viscount Denoir, but it didn't seem like he was happy to say this.

After all, the only reason that we were doing this was all because of his daughter.

As an overprotective parent, he naturally wouldn't have wanted any of this to happen. So he certainly didn't want to be told by someone else that he had quite the successor.

Though there was a trace of pride that was in his eyes.

Since he had no choice, there was a part of him that had slowly started accepting this situation.

That meant that he was slowly accepting me.

After this small interlude between the two of them, King Abel XIV said in a more serious voice, "You will be in charge of preparing the space for their new store, as well as guiding them around the capital when they come."

I was once again surprised since this wasn't the kind of mission that I had been expecting, but there was certainly more to this.

Seeing the look on my face, King Abel XIV continued, "Though your real mission will be to find what kind of things they are hiding. I want to know their intention in providing support to the hero, as well as where they obtained all those magic items."

A trace of bitterness filled me when I heard this.

It was as I had suspected, there was still doubt that King Abel XIV had towards this entire situation.

But he certainly wouldn't have thought that he would be exposing his plans like this.

After all, he was basically telling his plans to the one that he was plotting against.

It really wasn't that efficient if one thought about it.

"I think that there are people that are more qualified to take this mission rather than me, right?" I didn't accept right away after hearing this and instead posed this question.

King Abel XIV nodded without any hesitation, a move that actually hurt me a bit.

But in the end, he said words that were even more hurtful, "There are certainly countless people that are more qualified than you, but you have an existing relationship with the hero. As well, you're close to the high elves who work with the hero. This person is supposed to be the childhood friend of the hero, so he might let his guard down since you're also the friend of the hero."

In short, it was all because of the existing relationship that I had established between my avatars that I had been chosen.

Though this was certainly good for me since it was easy for me to manipulate things as it was between myself, it did feel strange to be chosen because of this.

As if to comfort me, King Abel XIV added, "As long as you complete this mission, then you're looking at another title increase."

After what happened last time during the elven slave incident, I had received a title of my own. I had gone from simply the heir of a count and the future count to an actual baron.

Though it wasn't as if this baron title would conflict with my future count title since it was an independent title.

That meant that if I had multiple children, I would have separate titles to pass down.

Though comparing a count title to a baron title certainly wasn't a good comparison.

Still, it was better than having no title at all.

"Thank you, your majesty. I won't let you down." I said with a bow in the end.

King Abel XIV didn't say anything at first, but then he suddenly said, "Remember, you have to find out what his intentions really are. That is the most important part of your mission. Do you understand?"

I just gave a nod in response.
