They arrived back at the bar. John opened the door and walked in. Jake spotted Ophelia still helping Rogen, so all he did was wave at her before he went down into the cellar.
Inside the cellar, Lucas was still the only one there, and somehow he was still sleeping. But their presence woke him up. He looked around, rubbing his eyes and stretching.
"Hey guys," he said.
"Sometimes I wonder who I offended to be put together with someone like you," John said.
"Don't get salty on me, it's not my fault I like sleeping," Lucas retorted. John rolled his eyes, blew a cloud of smoke at Lucas, and turned away.
"So, where do we put the egg?" he asked.
"Give it to me, you'll ruin it," Peter came up and said immediately, his hands stretched out to collect the egg. John took out the egg and handed it to him along with the ring that had the red glow stones.
"Thank you," Peter said.
"Yeah yeah, just make about ten glow stones surround the egg," John said.
After they finished working on the egg, John was about to leave, but Jake stopped him.
"I need your help," he said, his tone bordering between begging and urgency.
"Hmmm, alright then, let's talk in the bar. I need a drink," John said and led the way. They made it up to the bar, John got a beer and walked to the table where Jake was already seated.
He took out his cigar and pressed it against the table, quenching the flames. He lifted his beer and took a mouthful.
"Alright, what is it?" he asked as he placed the cup down on the table.
"It's about the Chosen Paths," Jake said, and the moment those words left his mouth, John paused. He looked around as if trying to be sure that no one was watching.
"Hmmm, what about them?" John asked.
"Ever since I met you, it felt as if you already knew the flow of the day, perfectly leading things the way you wanted.
I had my thoughts about it, but that was all. Then we fought the snake, and twice you were able to flow time backward.
That's when I came to the realization that your path might have something to do with time," Jake said.
John didn't respond for a few seconds. He drank from his cup and placed it down slowly. "I guess I didn't really hide it all that well. Yes, my path has something to do with time.
It's the Path of the Timeless. A section of my path allows me to see a whole day ahead, but this is something I can only do once a week.
With that, I watched how our entire interaction would be that day and planned out everything," John said. He looked at Jake, wanting to see his reaction, but Jake simply had an eager face, listening to everything he was saying.
"The ability you saw me use during the fight is also one of my abilities from the Timeless, allowing me to undo death by rewinding the time a few seconds before.
Sadly, Paths have a cost, and this one is the weight it puts on my body and lifespan. With every time I use the rewind, I cause damage to my body, but also shave off a few days or weeks from my lifespan." John paused, his eyes drifted down to his cup. He ran his finger along the rim.
"So when I use it, I don't know if I'll drop dead the next second, yet I still have to use it," he added. His tone had gone hush, and he dragged out his words.
"I have one question. We all got the Paths the same day. How then did you train those abilities?" Jake asked.
"Ohh, that wasn't hard. When I received my path, it somehow came with the ability to see the day ahead, which I used.
But I also dug through the only records of the Timeless inside the cellar, and I found out about the second skill. Shockingly, it had no requirement to obtain. All I had to do was be willing to give my time to control time," he explained.
"I see," Jake muttered, then he pulled out the small black book and tossed it across the table.
"We aren't ever supposed to trust anyone, but I want to trust you for this moment," Jake said casually.
What Jake didn't expect was that as he threw the book over to John and trusted him, he did something that he wouldn't have normally done.
His mark glowed. John noticed it, as did Jake. Jake immediately tucked his hands under the table to not cause a panic.
He was pulled into the same mental space as before, and he saw the writing floating. (See the break in all logic spoken)
Those were the words written. He didn't understand them, but when John started speaking, he saw the words floating in the air.
(Did something just happen with your mark?)
The words turned green after John finished the question. Jake couldn't understand exactly what was going on, so he decided to keep the discussion going and see what happened.
"Yes, I think I unlocked a new part of my path," Jake said.
"Whoa, you must have subconsciously met the requirement," John said. The words he spoke lit up green as well.
Then Jake got an idea. He looked at John, "Tell me a lie."
"Huh?"
"Just tell me a lie," Jake repeated.
"Fine, uhm, I ate a spoon today," John said.
The words started appearing, all showing green until it got to "spoon" and it suddenly turned red.
The spoon was the obvious lie in the whole sentence, and as such the broken logic spoken—because it had never happened.
'Does this mean what I think it is? I can tell when something isn't how it's supposed to be?' Jake thought to himself. Being able to see when someone lied or blundered was a very useful tool for him right now. But somehow, he felt that wasn't the limit to this new ability.
