"Alright," Liu Xing muttered, his brows furrowed. The sun had already begun to peek over the horizon, casting a warm orange glow. Dewdrops formed on undisturbed leaves, falling to the ground and nourishing the earth. He had spent the entire night experimenting with the technique. His latest attempt had been nearly successful, and he believed his next attempt to execute his Heaven Grade technique would be perfect, so perfect it would make him proud. "Let's do this!"
Liu Xing cycled his qi in a pattern that began to feel familiar with excitement filling his heart. Beside him, Bai Lin also watched with excited eyes, as if witnessing a cultivator ascend to immortality. They had worked all night to perfect this technique. He would succeed.
A circle of electricity formed on the ground around him, darkening the already charred earth even further. It soon vanished, and he concentrated on chaining the pattern necessary to activate the technique. He extended his right hand, palm facing upwards, and as the cycling pattern completed, he willed the technique to activate.
A glowing blue orb of pure electricity materialized above his palm. The orb had weight, not as light as a feather, but not as heavy as a bowling ball. This was a stark contrast to his previous attempts, which had resulted in orbs that were either too light or too heavy. Excitement surged through him as he commanded the orb to float slightly higher, and it obeyed him naturally.
"It's working!" old man Bai Lin shouted, and Liu Xing grinned.
It was indeed working! Before, the technique had taken the form of a lightning sword with two electric wings, resembling a butterfly. He hadn't wanted this shape. It wasn't what he had imagined. So, he and Bai Lin had worked hard to make the technique to form into his exact lightning blade. But after hundreds of attempts, the shape vehemently retained its form. A spark of idea came after the old man explained that the technique's vital function was to act as an additional eye for the user. Thus, he visualized something other than a sword that better aligned with this function, and the form… was an electric orb.
"Make it zip away," the old man said with excitement.
Liu Xing nodded and looked around for a suitable target. To his side were many trees and bushes, but if he squinted, he could see the old man's small hut. He chose it as his target, and with his heart thumping in his chest, he commanded the orb to move there. He had imagined it would move like a floating bubble, albeit much faster. But to his surprise, the orb untangled itself into a string of lightning, and with an unfathomably fast speed, vanished from his hand. His heart beat faster and faster in his ribs. The speed exceeded his expectations! Had the orb truly moved with such speed? Was it even faster than him? Suddenly, a doubt entered his mind, perhaps the orb of lightning hadn't moved, but disintegrated.
"Where did that orb of lightning go?" Bai Lin asked.
"It was supposed to move toward your hut," he answered.
"Then what are you waiting for? Use the function to see from its point of view."
He thought for a moment, deciding not to overthink it. If the orb still existed, he could see from its point of view. If it had disintegrated, while disappointing, he could always try again. Concentrating his mind, he tried to find a connection to his orb. This part wasn't difficult; after all, his gun and summons shared a similar aspect with this technique. When he found it, Liu Xing grinned widely. It seemed it hadn't disintegrated at all!
With a thought, he nudged the orb of lightning, and to his surprise, he could truly see the little hut from high above, as if he were a bird. The sensation of seeing with three eyes and from two different places was surreal and somewhat uncomfortable, but he would undoubtedly get used to it.
"From your vantage point, how many flowers can you see?" Bai Lin suddenly asked.
Liu Xing turned his head, his eyebrows rising, and then understanding dawned on him. Bai Lin wanted to verify the success of his technique.
"The technique worked perfectly. I can see your little hut. As for how many flowers there are…" He closed his real eyes and focused on his third eye, which swept over the old man's little herb garden. He could see several small trees whose leaves swayed in the fresh morning breeze, dewdrops clinging to blades of grass, and flowers in the process of blooming under the morning sun. There were white flowers, yellow flowers, purple flowers, red flowers, and many more, though only the yellow and white flowers were already in bloom.
He counted meticulously and said, "There are fifty-six flowers in total. Twenty of them have already bloomed."
The old man grinned, though Liu Xing could see a hint of sadness in his eyes. Perhaps the flowers reminded the old man of his grandson again. "Congratulations. That technique is yours."
A wide smile bloomed on Liu Xing's lips, and he clasped his hands and bowed slightly. "Thank you for your guidance. I will never forget your help. You're technically one of my teachers now."
The old man laughed heartily. Coincidentally, rays of morning sunlight finally reached their clearing, and one beam shone on the old man's face, making his hearty laugh seem radiant, as if he were the happiest person in the world. Seeing this, Liu Xing realized that while the old man would occasionally remember his grandson, he was still fundamentally happy. After all, not all memories were bad, and Liu Xing was sure the old man would increasingly recall happy memories of his grandson now that his grandson's killer was dead.

"Don't flatter me, I was just nudging you here and there. That technique is yours. I cannot replicate it myself."
It was indeed the case. This was a technique that could be tailored to an individual. He bet that if hundreds of disciples learned this technique, no two would be truly the same.
"I forgot to tell you the most important part of the technique," Bai Lin said. He paused for a moment. "A wasp is good for spying on people. It's small and can fly silently. Unless someone has knowledge about insects and knows that a certain wasp only lives in a specific place, people wouldn't bat an eye at seeing one. This is actually one of the main benefits of this technique. Your modified technique has lost this edge."
Old man Bai Lin walked from the clearing, and Liu Xing followed him. As they reached the lake with its serene waves, they began to walk, circling its edge.
"True," Liu Xing said after a while. His ball of lightning was small, the size of a marble, but it was quite noticeable. Let alone a cultivator, even a mortal would be wary if they saw it. His modified technique had somehow lost one aspect of the original design, although he was already getting an idea to sidestep this limitation.
"But this aspect isn't the most important for the technique," Bai Lin continued. "You can still see from that orb of lightning of yours, right?"
"Yes," he nodded. He was actually quite dizzy from seeing two distinct places at the same time. He could simply cut the connection to his technique, but he intended to train with it a little longer. "How long can this technique last?" he asked.
This was a Heaven Grade technique, so he imagined it would last quite long. At a minimum, a week, and since it scaled with the user's cultivation, perhaps an Immortal could use it indefinitely. For him, perhaps this ball of lightning would last around two weeks. With his gun, he could extend it for about a month. Although, all of this was just speculation. Bai Lin was the one who knew the most about this technique.
"That little orb of lightning of yours can last for eternity, as long as it's not destroyed," Bai Lin said casually.
Upon hearing what Bai Lin said, Liu Xing's feet stopped moving, as if suddenly encased in eternal ice. He blinked several times, his mind racing to backtrack and consider the implications of that information. He didn't have a hearing problem, so surely, the old man had said something he wasn't meant to say. There was no way it was true. Did the old man think Liu Xing was an Immortal?
"You heard it right," Bai Lin said, stopping his walk. "This technique isn't particularly strong, though its range is indeed great. Overall, it's a good spying technique, but if that were all, there's no way it would be a Heaven Grade. At most, it would be an Earth Grade. This is the true value of this technique. Each time you use it, you gain a permanent eye, as long as it's not destroyed."
Liu Xing switched his point of view to that little lightning orb, rotating it to try and see the whole lake. Its surface gleamed in the morning light. It was quite beautiful, like a fine, shiny jewel. He rotated the lightning orb a bit more, and he could see his own back. Upon seeing his own back, he understood the magnitude of the revelation the old man had just shared.
"Every time I use the technique, I gain an eye," he muttered. That was ridiculous. While the technique required effort to use, it wasn't excessively difficult. He had already executed it perfectly once, so he would have no trouble using it again. If he could create an eye in one minute, in two minutes he would have two, in three minutes he would have three. Then what if he dedicated an entire day to using this technique again and again? How many eyes could he have? What about a month? A year? What about ten years?
It felt like lightning had just struck him. Suddenly, he realized how much he had underestimated a Heaven Grade technique. This technique was truly beyond his imagination!
"Of course, there's a catch," Bai Lin said, making Liu Xing sigh in relief. This technique was almost too overwhelming. "You can't create unlimited eyes. Otherwise, your mind would explode."
"Makes sense," he answered, "then what's the limit? A hundred?"
A hundred permanent eyes. Each capable of moving independently. It would make him incredibly effective at gathering information.
"It depends on the user. Currently, I can create three if I don't mind straining my brain. But the higher your cultivation, the more eyes you can produce. An Immortal using this technique probably could have unlimited eyes. Though, I suspect when you become an Immortal, this technique would be too basic for you."
"If I become an Immortal, I will use this technique extensively," Liu Xing jokes, which made Bai Lin smile. "Still, the limitation isn't too bad. It's still immensely useful."
He wanted to test how many eyes he could currently produce. One lightning orb had already made him dizzy; if he suddenly created a hundred, he was sure his mind would freeze. Still, even though the old man hadn't explicitly said it, he knew this limitation wasn't absolute. If he trained extensively, he was sure he could increase the number of lightning orbs he could manage without even advancing to the next stage or realm.
"What do you want to call this technique?" the old man asked. "After all, it's not a wasp."
Liu Xing stroked his chin, focusing his attention on the lightning orb and rotating it so he could see the lake again. Then, he focused his third eye on the center of the lake, where he could see a yellow fish swimming just below the surface. He willed it to move. One moment, the eye was still hovering near the hut; then, his vision turned blindingly white, and the next moment, his orb arrived right above the fish, which startled and swam away. He rotated his third eye again and, at the same time, rotated his physical body, so he and his lightning orb could see each other. The experience was surreal and dizzying, but he could see his lightning orb and himself simultaneously.
"I've decided on a fitting name," Liu Xing said. "I prefer simple names, so Eye of Lightning would suffice."
As he said that, the qi around him suddenly moved, swirling like butterflies happily fluttering around. This reaction likely occurred because he unconsciously cycled his qi, but it made him think that even the qi agreed with the name he had given the technique. Eye of Lightning. It was a simpler name than the original, yet it felt perfect.
"A good name," Bai Lin smiled, then tapped Liu Xing's shoulder twice. "Would you like some breakfast?"
Liu Xing commanded his Eye of Lightning to move. In the middle of the lake, it transformed into a string of lightning and, a fraction of a second later, materialized right on his right shoulder, as if it had teleported there. He was actually curious about how fast his third eye was. Would it be faster than him? How far away could he use this technique? Also, he still hadn't tried using this technique with his gun. Still, the offer to eat breakfast with the old man wasn't bad. Sometimes, he needed to relax.
"Sure, do you have any rice porridge?"
"I don't, but I think we can cook some together. How about it?"
Liu Xing agreed, and they walked toward the old man's little hut. On the way, they talked about unimportant things, like what kind of herbs the old man had in his garden, where he sold them, the biggest fish he'd caught from the lake, and so on.
If someone had seen them and asked about their relationship, some might have said they looked like a grandson and a grandpa, while others might have said they were friends.
