North American Detective: I am Proficient in All Kinds of Gun Quick Draws

Chapter 220 Origin_1

Dean pulled out the last sheet of white paper from the document bag.

On it, written in a sharp and forceful hand, were two brief lines:

"Nice to meet you, I am Carol."

"This is a very interesting case, originally set as my regular evaluation. But seeing as you've come to the Commonwealth, I wanted to test your mettle. Of course, you can also choose to refuse."

At the end of the two lines, there was a smiley face.

Just by looking at the document, it seemed Carol didn't harbor much hostility towards him.

Dean muttered to himself, Three to four months, and this amoral, wild demon seems to have been trained quite well.

His curiosity and interest in the Kaz School, about which he had only heard, grew stronger. His purpose in coming here was to use the Kaz School to understand Mentor Anthony's current situation. Since Carol wasn't in a hurry, it suggested the situation might not be as troublesome as he had imagined. So... playing along with this little girl might be fine.

Dean clenched his fist, ready to put this immature demon in her place and teach her what respect meant.

...

Niel had a tough time last night. When Carol arrived at the hotel entrance, Niel was still fast asleep. Dean left a note by the bedside and, taking the document bag Carol had given him yesterday, left the hotel suite.

「The hotel lobby.」

Carol sat with a sketchbook, watching the travelers come and go. She occasionally glanced down to sketch abstract animal figures and simplified drawings of clothing. The features of the clothing on these animals, however, allowed onlookers to easily match each drawing to a specific traveler still in the lobby.

She was engrossed in her drawing. Only when Dean tapped her shoulder did Carol calmly turn around.

Seeing it was Dean, she looked back down, flipped to a blank page, and quickly started to sketch.

Carol's skill was high-level. In just a few breaths, the blank page featured a bizarre image: a bear's body, a wolf's head, and, strangely, a forked serpent's tongue.

The image lacked eyes. Carol paused with her pencil where the eyes should be, hesitating for a moment before she decisively clipped the pencil back onto her sketchbook. She then tore out the drawing and handed it to Dean, "A gift for our meeting."

Dean took the paper and smiled. "Is this me?"

Carol nodded. "This is training with the Kaz Mind Reading Technique. I can now easily see through most people's personalities, but with you..."

"What did you see?"

Dean shook the sketch in his hand. "Let me guess. The bear's body means you think I'm domineering. The wolf's head, you consider my methods ruthless and that I hold grudges. The serpent's tongue... are you suggesting I'm insidious? What about the eyes? Why are there no eyes?"

Although he appeared to take it lightly, inwardly, Dean was shocked! These depictions were basically correct. This was partly because he hadn't deliberately disguised himself, but Carol's Mind Reading Technique, if converted to a skill Level, had to be at least L2, and was perhaps even touching the fringes of L3!

It just went to show that, in some respects, hard work was worthless in the face of talent!

Carol wagged her finger. "Dean, I must correct you on two points!"

"First, the bear's body doesn't just indicate being domineering; it also represents being a scoundrel. When it's a choice between face and benefits, you'd choose benefits one hundred percent of the time!"

Dean: "..."

Damn! This girl is too accurate!

"Second!" Carol said, a faint smile touching her lips. "Besides resilience and holding grudges, the wolf also represents responsibility and loyalty. You must love your family very much and take good care of your friends. However, if it came to a crucial decision, you wouldn't compromise; you'd make the most correct and ruthless choice."

Dean: "..."

At that moment, he truly felt a sense of dread and shock, as if he'd been completely exposed, seen through without any concealment!

He'd been wrong. Carol's observational skills and her study of psychology, if converted into a Skill, were undoubtedly at L3!

"Then why are there no eyes?"

Carol spread her hands. "Because I feel like you're suppressing something in your heart. It's something very heavy, but I can't make out what it is."

"Impressive!" Dean said, giving Carol a thumbs-up, genuinely impressed. At the same time, he made an internal decision: If I ever become enemies with this girl, I won't hesitate. I'll take her out with a single shot—the most direct physical elimination.

Praised, Carol looked somewhat embarrassed. She lowered her head slightly. "Actually, these are just conjectures I came up with after watching recordings all night. If it were Mr. Anthony, he probably could have analyzed all this easily. So, he must have seen what you're hiding, and that's why he thought you had great potential."

Case closed, Dean thought, smiling but saying nothing.

He'd had similar thoughts when his own Mind Reading Technique reached L3. The first time he met Anthony, he had been too naive. Luckily, their time together hadn't been long. Otherwise, Dean wouldn't have been confident he could have pulled off so many things later right under Anthony's nose.

...

After their unique exchange, the two highly intelligent individuals finally got down to business.

Dean took out the white paper Carol had left him and shook it. "Let's not talk about that. I looked over the case summary you gave me yesterday. This case isn't as simple as just having a hidden criminal, is it? There must be other things you haven't told me, right?"
