「The next day.」
Dean, along with Harry, Carlo, and Cheston En—all four of them—arrived at 'Madam Jin's Department Store,' a foreign trade company located in the city center.
It was a foreign trade company specializing in daily necessities. It wasn't large; they sourced goods directly from cheap factories in China, then rebranded and packaged them before shipping them off to be sold in the United States Federation.
Therefore, the foreign trade company's office in Los Angeles didn't actually employ many people.
Seven or eight individuals were squeezed into a single-rented office on the eighteenth floor of a commercial building, with five or six computers. The employees there were either reading the newspaper or watching a soccer match.
Harry wanted to go up and call their person in charge out.
Dean stopped him, glanced briefly at the few individuals through the glass, then turned to Cheston En and said, "Cheston En, go find the person responsible for this commercial building. Have them get their subordinates to compile a list of names for the cleaning staff, property management, security, and so on!"
Cheston En wasn't Dean's subordinate.
But faced with Dean's assignment, he didn't hesitate much. He nodded, took out his phone, and walked to the end of the corridor to start working.
Carlo looked at Dean with confusion, "Boss, aren't we here to investigate this foreign trade company?"
Dean pointed to his head. "This is a very simple logical problem. You all need to learn to use your brains when you work!"
Harry's face was equally puzzled at first, but when he caught sight of a cleaner in uniform pushing a cart into the elevator, he suddenly realized, "I get it! This trade company has so few people; once exposed, it would be difficult for them to hide. The killer obviously isn't a fool, so he's more likely to have a role that allows entry into and exit from other companies' offices without raising suspicion!"
Dean nodded in approval. "Yes, and this commercial building leases offices to many companies, many of which have their own separate internet lines. The killer could use different companies' computers each time to contact the victims."
The key was that a place housing numerous companies would be rife with chaotic foot traffic. Once police presence was detected, the killer could make a run for it at the first sign!
Having heard their explanations, Carlo also understood, a troubled expression appearing on his serious face. "Boss, if that's the case, then the killer could also disguise themselves as a building employee without actually being employed. Wouldn't that be even safer?"
Dean shrugged. "That's right, which is why I sent Cheston En to get the list. Then, based on the email send times, we can check the surveillance footage of the elevators and corridors to see if we can directly identify the suspect."
The FBI's name worked wonders.
After a call from Cheston En, a middle-aged woman with an indifferent expression, wearing black glasses, immediately welcomed them into an office.
"Gentlemen agents, I am Indy, the supervisor in charge of this commercial building. Here's what you requested. If there's anything else you need, you can tell me directly. Our boss's only request is that you don't cause too much commotion in the building!"
After Indy spoke, she pushed a pile of documents toward them. Then, she silently walked to a corner, picked up a newspaper, and sat down, not the least bit concerned about the purpose of their visit.
The information she provided included photos of all the building's staff and their identity registration details. Beyond that, the building's layout, emergency exit routes, and surveillance camera placements—everything was available, meticulously thorough.
Utilizing his powerful cognitive abilities, Dean quickly memorized all the information. He then approached Supervisor Indy, not saying a word but smiling and quietly sizing her up.
Indy had strong composure, but under Dean's intense gaze, she lasted only a dozen seconds before becoming somewhat uncomfortable. She lifted her head slightly, opened her coat a little to reveal the gun holster inside, and mouthed silently, "Buddy, don't make trouble for yourself!"
Dean shrugged.
Alright, so this woman is indeed from an intelligence organization of the United States. No wonder the material she provided in such a short time is so professional. This is actually quite normal. For a commercial building that gathers numerous foreign trade offices, it would be strange if American intelligence organizations didn't embed undercover agents. It's just unexpected that I've bumped into one.
Dean didn't want any trouble. After ruling her out as a suspect, he said, "Ms. Indy, we need to check the surveillance now."
"No problem."
Indy put down her newspaper and once again led them by elevator to the building's surveillance room.
Normally, these surveillance rooms could only be opened from the inside during each shift. The only exception was for a few magnetic cards with extremely high access privileges.
Indy was the supervisor.
She took the badge hanging on her chest and swiped it lightly against the heavy door.
BEEP.
The door gently popped open.
The surveillance room was sizable.
What met the eye were numerous surveillance screens covering three walls of the room, probably seventy or eighty screens in total. The screens weren't very clear but were good enough to distinguish people's faces and clothing.
However, inside the surveillance room, there was only one woman wearing a skimpy apron and a shoulder holster, bobbing to the music in her headphones as she monitored the screens.
Only when Indy approached, her face stern, and tapped the young woman's shoulder did the latter realize that someone had come in!
The young woman instinctively reached for her holster. After recognizing Indy's face, she looked slightly embarrassed, pulled off her headphones, and said with a typical sly demeanor, "Supervisor Indy, what brings you here?"
"These gentlemen have something they need to check the building's surveillance for," Indy said, adjusting the glasses on her face, and then added, "Before you come to work tomorrow, have your team leader come see me!"
