The alarm came suddenly as the loud clangs of a bell rang through the halls.
"It begins! The first wave is approaching! Battle stations!" Came the roaring, fierce sound of a roaring dwarf.
Despite their diminutive size, dwarves were beasts of war. Strong, organized, and master craftsmen.
In many ways, it was man's blessing the dwarves saw them as allies than enemies.
Richard and the rest had long been prepared as they went out and dressed quickly.
Richard in particular was dressed in the Atlas armor's first form. They rushed over to meet with Que and the rest of the australian federation's soldiers.
When Que saw them, he rose his hand in greeting, though looking surprised by the armor Richard was donning, as were the dwarves and the eastern craftsman, though no one said anything, as their eyes turned serious.
Curiosity was tucked in away for a more appropriate time.
"They're coming?" Sister Alexandria slithered forth and asked the pressing question.
Que nodded. "Our equipment has recorded the increased frequency of sounds and movements. They'll be here soon. An hour or two at the most. Naturally we have to begin preparing. "
Things went by in a flash as the commander quickly assigned us to group 3, a group that would accept the brunt of the attack.
Richard didn't feel there was anything wrong with that. They had already shown off sufficient strength. B ranks were not the strongest warriors on the battlefield, but they were not weak. In a low level battlefield they wold still comprise a huge part of the elite forces
And they had shown minimum B-rank power.
Sister Alexandria was according to her, already at the pinnacle of the world. In that view, it was optimal for her to be at the forefront of the battle.
It would be a waste of such ability if she was moved to a random corner of the battlefield.
They weren't the only ones there, as there were countless other dwarves who had their names read out and assigned to their respective bases
. What followed was a furious flurry as the dwarves rushed to their respective stations, preparing for the oncoming storm.
The troop leader assigned to them was a dwarf named Armstrong, appropriately named for his long lanky arms, unique amongst the stubby dwarves.
Like all dwarves, he was a bit rough around the edges, with a surly tone, but he was not disrespectful in any way.
Richard heard one dwarf calling him a monkey; in that he had long arms and that he was as cunning as one.
Whether this meant that he was aware of their meeting with the lords of the city, or that was simply polite to avoid trouble, Richard kept quiet and simply made note of it.
The residences were less impressive than what they had previously received, more basic and less accommodating to various species, but Richard thought this was quite normal, as the garrison was made for dwarves.
They didn't spend much time there either, as the bell began to rig.
On most days it would signal the beginning of a monster wave, but today was different.
The danger would not come from the outside, but underneath, their very foundation.
Today heralded the arrival of titans.
Richard watched as the kaiju approached.
According to the writer Que, the first wave to emerge always comprised of the lower level monsters. It is commonly believed this is because these lower level monsters are fleeing from the higher level ones, who are in turn fleeing the presence of higher level kaiju.
In essence, it was quite similar to the ordinary monster waves, which were often the result of ecological disturbances, or the intrusion of invasive forces. The only reason it's rate as more dangerous was because of the nature of kaiju.
Kaiju are less mobile and less capable of mobilizing mana and qi based abilities, often relying solely on their physique to fight.
Combined with their huge size, they are a gar greater danger to people than ordinary monsters, who have magical powers, but are easily dispatched of.
Kaiju, are not. He'd already seen the drop bears, so Richard already had a preliminary understanding of them.
The sight was still terrifying, as the earth trembled and the ground cracked.
It groaned and and shook, pushing outward, before deflating and crumbling inward, collapsing and revealing a gigantic hole, large beyond Richard's ability to measure.
It made sense though.
From what he understood, the struggle of the kaiju currently was crossing the mountain, which had once sealed the tunnel off to collapse, reopening into the previous tunnel.
Though perhaps not immediate at first glance, there was a divide between the land that formed the edge of the tunnel, and the collapsed mountain, one that would become more clear as the kaiju targeted these weak points instinctively.
Even now, the hole was expanding continuously beyond their sight.
Perhaps if Richard were in full dragon form he'd be able to see the full view of the hole, but Richard was unwilling to reveal his dragon form for now, mainly for two reasons.
1. To do so now is inefficient, when they were merely facing low level kaiju. It was better for him to pace himself, and gain more experience in human combat before returning to dragon form.
2. He was unwilling to expose himself. Though the formula existed and gave him an excuse to avoid attention, the people of the empire may still be suspicious. Though the foreign people of the Australian Federation may be familiar and used to its existence, the adventurers were less likely to trust this new and unusual thing. It might be better to wait until others do it first, as to stand out less.
Creatures began to clamber out of the hole, ranging from 2 meters up to 20 meters.
Royal Road is the home of this novel. Visit there to read the original and support the author.
Most of them were level one, though from what he understood, those who were 20 meters and above were considered class 2.
These creatures were in many ways, scaled up creatures, with unique features.
A tiger like beast with two large protruding fangs coming out of its mouth and a large scale like tail,
A large bird with even larger legs, similar to the so called ostrich he had read about in books, though it looked less docile and more ferocious, a large metallic beak and legs infested with crystals.
A terrifying octopus like creature, with a large spinning shell on its back being one of the tallest thanks to its cone shell.
May more such creatures poured out in droves, stepping on one another as they approached the somewhat hastily prepared defenses.
Even given months of advance did not allow the walls to be adequate before the looming danger.
10 meters doesn't sound like a lot at first glance, until you look up and realize the creature is at least 5 times your size. Perhaps it was even worse for dwarves, who were often half the height of a human.
They sure didn't show it though.
The long armed dwarf screamed: "FIRE!"
As countless mages began to wave their strongest spells.
Richard was no different, casting lightning volleys, relying on the electrical reserves he had saved in his clouds.
Ever since he had to prepare for the oncoming kaiju wave, he had begun to save up and condense the lightning for greater effect.
He wasn't made up of unlimited power after all.
Krackle... was playing pretend as a decoration still. When he had an opportunity later, he'd release them, but the entire point of hiding them was to serve as a surprise card. He was curious if eating the kaiju would be of any benefit to the octopus, especially that larger one with the cone like shell.
Sister Alexandria looked pretty serious as she cast spell after spell in rapid succession. She looked pretty serious too, which was impressie once you realize how little effort that was for her.
Archers were shooting as well, with Olivia having taken out a longbow and shooting rather large and terrifying bone arrows, with Ellie doing the same, though her bow was not as large as Olivia's.
Everyone else was on standby. Panda and Achil were melee fighters and not appropriate on the battlefield currently, and Frodo was a priest, a healer whose purpose would begin once people began suffering injuries.
It was inevitable too.
Richard had to admit that these creatures had terrifying durability. He watched one ape like one lose an entire arm and barely react, continuing to rush forward. It's arm was already beginning to scab over.
One of the previously mentioned birds lost its head and still moved forth a few more steps before collapsing, causing the earth to shake a little.
The things were basically walking tanks. It reminded him that he still had one kaiju egg from the gacha he could use. Seeing these mere level 1 kaiju survive this well showed him the potential they had. The only real problem they had was size.
Although they manage to kill quite a few with the flash rain of spells, even more of them manage to quickly stomp over their fallen comrades, some of them even pausing to grab a limb or two for a quick bite, growing in real time.
"VANGUARD! MOVE FORWARD! HEALERS, STAND AT ATTENTION!" The commander looked fearless as he said this, yet grim as he watched many of the kaiju recover from their injuries in mere moments, charging forward recklessly. Many of them looked scared.
Scared and cornered creatures were the most dangerous, desperate enough to do anything to survive.
Supporters were not mentioned as of yet, likely saved for later waves. This was merely the first wave after all. To apply spells that strengthen the body are costly, especially when cast for a wide area effect. Better to save them for later.
Now the likes of Achil and Panda moved forth, and Olivia put down her bow, picking up the greatsword she was using previously.
Panda lept from kaiju to kaiju as easy as jumping from branch to branch.
Although he tried irritating them at first, it didn't take long to realize that words and insults meant nothing to them, even when spoken to them in beastly tongue.
Perhaps it was fear. Or stupidity. Richard had heard many kaiju were not particularly smart. Another trade off of their terrifying strength and durability was a loss of intelligence, though creatures like dropbears tended to tow that line.
It was already a brutal battle. Once the humans came into clashes with the kaiju, it was clear how much the size affected the outcome.
Most of the attacks adventures could muster were mere scratches for the creatures. Not only that, but the size which made the creatures cumbersome also ensured that the damage couldn't be done in the best points. Neck, eyes, heart, any weak point that may exist was usually beyond their reach, or unaffected by the scale of their attack.
In fact, the real damage was being done by the mages and their projectiles, which were not only able to reach these higher points, but many of them targeted more than one target, thus doing damage on a greater scale.
There were naturally some exceptions to the rule. Olivia was able to cleave kaiju in twine and Achil, contrary to his size was a real powerhouse.
As a B-rank dragon-saurian hybrid, even if he was in a weaker human form, he was still more capable than most B-rank warriors, especially since his scales maintained the hardness of before. He was vicious too, as he tore through kaiju, tearing limb from limb.
His bestial nature was shown in the ruthless and messy way he fought, in stark contrast to his quiet nature.
Once he realized that words could not do the deed, he simply switched to combat, gouging out eyes and crawling up noses before expanding and blowing up heads.
Terrifying. It seems his ability to shrink also worked in reverse, allowing him to grow as well. This ability was perfectly suited to deal with kaiju, who had large orifices capable of sneaking a squirrel in.
They weren't the only ones as many other adventurers were defeating kaiju with ease. The greatsword did not set Olivia too far apart from these other experienced fighters. It was just that they were the minority, clearly those whose strength was above average.
Although his appraisal spell wasn't at high enough proficiency, it was enough to see those that weren't having any problems usually had twice the states of those who were struggling.
Even more to his surprise, the long armed dwarf's stats were invisible to him, signaling that there was more to him.
It was clear that some arrangements were made beforehand. Not too surprising.
RIchard knew that his group was a variable to Que, but an unknown one with an unquantifiable value given he could only speculate.
Could the dwarves take such a risk upon such an unreliable factor? Of course not.
Still, he was quite curious what kind of backup plans were made.
After all, this first wave was already causing trouble, this wave comprised of solely class one kaiju.
What were they going to do once the scale went up?
Frodo was no longer standing still as he alongside various other priests and healers were moving across the field, providing support to the injured adventurers.
The battlefield was an absolute mess, as supporters ran like chickens with their heads cut off, and adventurer's working in small squads to defeat the kaiju.
Whether that was good or bad for the overall situation, could only be seen with time.
Boom!
Before Richard could react, the ground collapsed as a creature twice the size of the previous ones crawled out of the hole.
He couldn't calculate its full size, but from the waist up was already enough to tower over the previous ones, at what he could only assume was 30-40 meters tall.
A giant scaled beast, a neck like a serpent and teeth like a hippo, its hands ended in giant forearms, with muscles like a chimpanzees.
It's head was incomparably small compared to the rest of the body, but was more than enough to fit something human sized without having to break it down to size.
Two large sacs trailed down the length of the neck, expanding and shrinking with every breath.
Each of its fingers were the size of an entire adventurer, and biceps the size of a small house.
its heaving grunts enough to blow some off their feet, it's every movement enough to shake the ground.
The kaiju they were fighting before immediately began to flee, clearly scared enough to run and abandon the conflict. It was a natural suppression of low level beasts before a higher being. None of them were stopped. They weren't expected to stop them all after all, merely bear the brunt of it. As long as no high level kaiju managed to escape the barricade, the defense would be considered a success.
One did not make it, a small bird like kaiju at 5 meters, was grabbed by the beast and shoved into its mouth, the loud crunching noises vibrating through the entire area.
The adventurers collapsed in silence at the sheer brutality. Even the higher rank adventurers around had to look on grimly.
Many adventurers were shivering in fear, before a golden glow enveloped the adventurers, the blessing of the Gods bestowed upon them by priests. A basic blessing held by priests of all orders, yet at moments of panic like these, absolutely vital, as the blessing calmed the mind and strengthened the nerve.
It was at this moment the long armed dwarf began to shout, catching the attention of all the panicking adventurers after the calming wave.
"All low-rank adventurers! FALL BACK! NO ONE BELOW THE C RANK SHOULD STILL BE ON THE BATTLEFIELD! THAT IS A LEVEL 3 KAIJU! I REPEAT, NO ONE BELOW THE C-RANK SHOULD STILL BE ON THE BATTLEFIELD!" Hearing this, the now calmer, yet still scared, adventurers began to pull back in rushed fashion
He paused, before letting out an even louder bellow.
"RELEASE THE DROPBEARS!"
