The name of the mecha was Phantom Cloud-1, an SS rank item; no doubt, anything with an S-Grade assignment was bound to be immensely powerful.
Derek was in the cockpit, unleashing all the chaos, he could, there was barely any form of martial art in his attacks, he barely needed to.
With every stomp and slap, a C or D rank Bug was sent to Insect heaven.
" This is so fucking amazing " Derek yelled excitedly, controlling the mecha, to slap towards three Chitin-armored Insects.
They exploded into a mist of green corrosive liquid rain, but the mecha was not affected in the least by the corrosive acid.
Several meters away, the members of the Genesis Squad stood in awe as they watched the scene.
They had already put a lot of distance between them and the subway after the Mecha had appeared, they were well aware that a battle of this level was not something they could participate in, a single C-rank Bug was enough to give them a headache, but this mecha was here sending them to the afterlife with simple slaps.
They already felt their worldview collapsing, they had been training g their whole life for this moment, only to find out that they were pretty much as useless as the civilians they were tasked to protect.
Andrew inhaled and wiped the sweat from his brow.
" Right now, what we need to know is whether this Mecha is friend or foe "
" Friend or Foe? " The question rang through the minds of the twenty-man squadron. This was a simple question, but the answer could determine the fate of thousands of people.
" Do you think this has anything to do with that guy who saved us earlier, that lightning guy? " Evelyn asked.
" I guess so, they both possess technology that is far ahead of our own, but it's not our job to investigate, the higher-ups are already gathering information ", Andrew answered, gazing into the distance with a thoughtful expression on his face.
Derek continued his assaults' on the endless swarm of Insectoids, the sound of notifications of System credits and EXP gained was increasing, his level up to 21 which seemed nigh impossible was no longer a dream, the bar was actually fucking half full, he had managed to almost gain 2.5 million in this onslaught.
If there were no incidents, he could happily gain another 2 million Experience Points at the end, but fate was sometimes cruel or rather liked to play tricks.
As Derek squished the umpteenth bug monster underfoot, he noticed a change, he could feel a powerful aura building up from dozens of meters away, in the tunnel underground, the antennas of the remaining bugs, begun to twitch and their mandibles and pincers shook with excitement.
A layer of debris and earth suddenly exploded underneath the Mecha, before Derek could react, a thousand meter radius of earth had exploded, the mecha was sent flying into the air, and tumbling backwards.
" Boom " He crashed into a tall building, creating a dust storm.
" What just happened " Andrew exclaimed in surprise, the other Genesis Squad Members also peeled their eyes opened, trying to see the dust clouds that had appeared.
" Damn it " Derek cursed, controlling the mecha to get up, he felt a dull ache in his head, after all he was neurally linked to the Mecha,
Standing or whatever bugs do with their legs in the thousand meter pit with concrete shattered, metal twisted and screeched, with debris exploded outwards was a bloated giant sized Scarab.
She was grotesquely majestic—easily four stories tall, her obsidian carapace rippling with oily sheen, each segment adorned with jagged bone-like ridges. Her underbelly throbbed and squirmed unnaturally, sacs of pulsing green fluid shifting beneath the translucent flesh. Spindly limbs, tipped with serrated claws, scraped along the pavement as she pulled herself forward.
But the worst part—her face.
A jagged crown of antennae, six alien eyes glowing like dying suns, and a mouth that opened vertically to reveal rows of grinding, pale teeth.
" Is this the Power Rangers, you just had to enlarge to fight my mecha, didn't you?" Derek sighed.
[Boss Identified: Brood Mother Scarab-
[Rank A-]
[Weapon: None]
Type: Birth-Type
"Kiiill... thiiiss... Iron Ssshell...", it suddenly let out in a grating voice.
Derek blinked. "No. Nope. No talking bugs. That's not allowed."
He took a reflexive step back—well, Phantom Cloud-1 did—when the Brood Mother let out a shrieking roar that made the buildings tremble and the swarm scatter. The lesser bugs parted before her like she was their messiah—or their god.
And then she charged.
Derek roared back, gripping the phantom neural controls and diving to the side as the beast barreled forward. A chunk of building vaporised under her weight, stone reduced to rubble as she crashed past.
The battle turned chaotic. Derek was throwing wild, brutal punches, ducking under acidic spit, slamming the mecha's foot down on bugs stupid enough to get close. His instincts screamed at him to keep moving, keep attacking. There was no finesse in his style—it was pure, brutal chaos.
"Eat robotic justice!" he shouted, smashing the mecha's elbow into the Brood Mother's flank. She shrieked, recoiling—but she was far from wounded. Her armour was tougher than the others, her bulk unrelenting.
Derek growled, preparing to drive a punch into her chest, when suddenly, everything froze.
The system chimed in, its calm, robotic voice utterly detached from the chaos.
[System Alert] — User MP Critically Low. Warning: Neural Sync Cost Tied to Mana Reserves. Warning: Phantom Cloud-1 will deactivate if MP reaches zero.
Derek's blood turned cold.
"What?, why didn't you fucking warn me earlier..."
Another notification dinged.
[Current MP: 11/2,000] Deactivation in 10... 9...
His mouth dropped. "No, no, no, you can't do this to me now! I just—I'm winning! Kinda!"
The mecha staggered, joints locking, movements slowing. The Phantom Cloud-1's crimson eyes flickered erratically.
"Oh shit oh shit oh shit," Derek spat, his thoughts racing. "System! Cancel countdown! Convert HP! Sell organs! Do something!"
The system was unimpressed.
[Unable to comply. Please refill MP or prepare for ejection.]
The Brood Mother wasn't waiting. She had noticed his hesitation in his stumble. Her maw split wide, emitting a hiss that sounded suspiciously like laughter.
She knew.
And she pounced.
The impact was like a meteor strike. Derek's vision blurred as the mecha was sent flying, smashing through a crumbling building and skidding across the pavement like a discarded toy. Inside the cockpit, sparks flew, and Derek's head slammed back into the seat.
The countdown ticked past 3.
"C'mon… think… think!" he rasped, blinking through the dizziness. "Mana… potion? Recharge? ANYTHING?"
Then—salvation.
A tiny, glowing icon on the interface. His system inventory.
Derek jabbed it with his mind like a man clicking "buy" on limited-edition sneakers. The MP Potion—the pale blue potion he had ignored now seemed like a rare, shiny blue elixir—materialised inside the cockpit. He didn't ask how it worked. He just drank it, mentally willing it to activate.
[MP Restored: +1,500] A system notification sounded.
The Mecha's AI came online again [System Stable. Phantom Cloud-1 Re-engaged.]
"YES!" Derek shouted, slamming both arms forward.
The mecha surged to its feet, systems roaring back online with a vengeance. The crimson glow in its eyes returned, brighter than before.
"Round two, you ugly cockroach."
He lunged.
Back in the distance, the Genesis Squad stared at the battle as if watching a kaiju movie live and in 4D.
