Chapter 215: Drathan Scrum

One thing Adam quickly figured out was that he should have practiced with the wingsuit. It had been too difficult for him to get high enough for a real test of it, so he decided to trust his crafters and pseudo-skills. Because one of the side wings didn't stretch quite as well as the other, his descent was not smooth or easy.

The suit was made out of the skin and wings of shot down Drathan mounts. It was very light and had good elasticity. The wing material seemed to reach for and collect the air, slowing his fall, even if he had trouble controlling his direction. Each side had a wing from his thigh to wrist. Then another flap was between his legs, from his ankles to his back.

As his fall decelerated, that was when the flying beast riders began to catch up to him. Three fire balls and a wind blade came at him. On instinct, Adam twisted his body to dodge. The arm and leg flaps folded, and he lost the parachute effect, spinning while plummeting.

Adam growled in annoyance.

Suddenly picking up speed, he dropped below the magical attacks aimed at him. Giving up on trying to steer, he closed his legs and pressed his arms to the sides while still holding his weapon. Streamlining through the air, head leading, he dropped towards a group of Drathan near the center of the base.

They were aware of him, and as he reached closer, more spells began coming at him from below. He opened the wings a few times to create enough drag to avoid some projectiles, then closed them to return to his rapid descent.

As he got close to the ground, and the invaders tried to stop him, he didn't bother dodging the projectiles. Since he no longer wore the jetpack, Adam had no issue using [Arc Shockwave]. Force blasted out from him, deflecting or dispersing the attacking magic.

Then, when Adam was about twenty feet above the ground, it was time for [Gladiator's Approach]. A few Drathan yelled as Adam vanished from the air. There was no movement to follow as he teleported in front of one of the invaders in the middle of a group. The others, with their eyes on his approach, didn't notice where he appeared.

Another [Arc Shockwave] ripped out from him, throwing the grouped Drathan into each other or to the ground. They were off balance and the one he targeted didn't have time to respond as the spiked hammer was swung downwards into their neck.

Feeling the crunch of vertebrae breaking as the spike on the end of the hammer penetrated the neck, Adam reversed his swing. Focusing on the long blade at the end of the handle, Adam aimed for the face of a Drathan that had fallen behind him. The blade didn't cut all the way through, but a large gash was opened up.

A few seconds of swinging the weapon was all it took for Adam to fatally wound five Drathan, although none were quite dead yet. Then Adam added an [Explosive Strike] to the head of the hammer and made contact with the armpit area of a Drathan further away. The impact caused a burst of fire and force as the energy of his pseudo-skill released.

Drathan "Battery Ontorga [31]" slain. 10,298 XP gained. Drathan "Aeromancer [36]" slain. 13,411 XP gained.

Adam ignored the kill notifications, only paying enough attention to acknowledge they were dying. He didn't want them to be healed and return to the fight. [Soul and Body Shaping] had also been opened so that he was drawing on 40% of the Grand Bloody Berserker stats.

The increased strength he was getting, thanks to finally having a class and being able to draw on more of future Gregor's stats, provided a lot more oomph than he had in his previous fight with the Drathan. Even though the river inside was running at the same intensity, he could feel the increased strength, speed, and vitality from it. There was excitement in Adam, even though his pulsing heat remained the same while filling him with anger. Adam let loose a roar, and the Drathan near him froze in surprise.

Adam became a tornado of violence. He spun, swung, and stabbed, throwing in skills to enhance his attacks. As always, [Kinetic Impact] kept them off balance while [Arc Shockwave] was used if too many attacks came at him.

He had noticed that there was more resistance to his movements due to his wingsuit, so Adam allowed a few attacks to hit him in places where they would eat through the material of it. Once enough of it was compromised, he ripped the whole suit off, revealing his more durable leather armor and pants underneath. His regular metal armor would have been too awkward with the jetpack.

With all the damage Adam did, it still didn't take much time for the Drathan outside of his immediate attack range to form up on him. They encircled him. The Drathan on the ground were pulled back by the arriving soldiers while the others raised their weapons.

Barriers of different elements appeared with flashes of red. Spells came flying at Adam. A fire pillar erupted from beneath his feet and swirling wind tried to contain it. Bolts of black, purple, and brown shot into the area without the Drathan needing to be concerned about friendly fire thanks to their barriers. A mess of power exploded within the circle.

One of the Drathan on the outside of the circle was flung forward. A dim white glow surrounded him. When that Drathan hit another, part of the force was transferred. That Drathan was knocked off his feet from behind, impacting another.

That entire side of the circling Drathan were knocked around. Their barriers either winked out of existence or changed direction, slamming into other Drathan. This breech in the barriers caused the power that was gathering in the center to expand into the gaps. Drathan yelled as the ones who had been knocked around were suddenly enveloped by the fire and wind, while being hit by the magic projectiles.

A cruel laugh came from behind the Drathan, to the left of the gap that had opened. The laugh contrasted with the concerned, angry, and painful yells. But Adam didn't stop and once more teleported to a Drathan on the other side of the circle. With [Kinetic Impact] on his hammer, once more Adam pinballed the Drathan off each other.

The power of the escaping magic wasn't as significant this time, and many of the Drathan had already stopped casting, realizing their target was no longer in the center of them.

Adam roared, freezing them all. Then he swung the spiked side of the hammer.

Drathan "Enflaming Ballista [39]" slain. 17,928 XP gained. Drathan "Barrier Conservationist [35]" slain. 15,283 XP gained.

Compared to the last time he fought them, they were going down much easier. Adam couldn't help but laugh at how much the stat change was improving things. His roar was more effective, his ability to penetrate their tough skin practically reminded him of fighting goblins, and the spells that did hit him barely singed as his physical stats soared.

It would still take time to stop all these foes, but he would keep going.

"General, the tow trucks are ready. All chains connected. Your orders?" asked a voice in his radio. Adam still had his mask on, though he had taken the goggles off when the fire burst had singed them.

"Get your pull on!" ordered Adam. "I'll manage here."

"Roger!"

Adam continued to fight in his style. He used [Gladiator's Approach] to move around unexpectedly. [Kinetic Impact] and [Arc Shockwave] would send his enemies sprawling while his weapon came down on them.

More Drathan were coming and the spells continued to rain down on him. Adam was able to smash their barriers in one or two hits using the hammer or his fists. They tried crowding him to limit his movement and the room to swing his hammer, but he would just teleport or jump away. He even tried the weak Protector skill, [Solid Arm], and found himself able to simply swipe through simple spells cast at him.

Then the ground began to shake. There was a quake beneath them and the floating island began to tilt.

"What's happening?" cried a few of the Drathan.

Then a voice spoke out. It wasn't loud, but it could be heard from everywhere while it used the Rift Menu to project and amplify.

"Unengaged casters, help with the Runic Control Orb. We need more power!" ordered a voice that Adam recognized. It was the Tier 4 tank that he had fought previously. The one that had been summoned from their original world.

Once more the ground trembled, though not enough to unbalance Adam or his opponents. He continued to swing his weapon and move around the enemies.

"General! They seem to be countering the trucks and chains. We don't have enough weight to pull it down!"

"Then get the army to grab hold and pull. You've got tens of thousands there to help! Get this rock low enough so they can join in!" yelled Adam into his mask as he ducked below a magically manifested battleaxe.

"Aww," whined Tom's voice. "We're going to miss the most epic game of tug-a-war in history!"

"Where are you guys?" asked Adam, stepping sideways before spinning his weapon to stab a Drathan's side with his handle blade.

"We just dropped off the jetpacks in the trees and are heading towards you," said Lucas. "Any directions?"

"Skirt around the ever-burning napalm fires and head to the Drathan scrum. You can't miss us. Tom, you can join the most epic game of rugby since you're missing the tug-of-war," said Adam before adding snarkily, "I can't miss the invaders either." Then the hammer spike caved in the head of another enemy.

Adam continued to fight and the Drathan continued to fall. Most that weren't taken by surprise required more than one hit to kill, but as Adam did in the past, he focused more on sowing chaos than killing. The whole time there was a rumble to the ground as his army was trying to pull down the floating island while the Drathan were trying to keep it high above the humans. However, very slowly the floating base was tipping.

Frustrated shouts by the Drathan let Adam know that his three friends had arrived, though they were still a few hundred yards away from him. He didn't bother to teleport or fight his way to them, trusting that the three would be able to survive on their own.

"The flyers seem to have had enough with the snipers picking them off. They've given up on the chains and are retreating to their base," a voice said through the radio.

"Heave!" yelled another voice in the background before the radio cut out. "Put your backs into it!"

A minute later there was another sudden downward shift in the ground. Almost immediately another burst of power yanked the ground back up.

"This is getting us nowhere," muttered Adam under his breath as he jumped away from five new Drathan approaching him. Even when they were well coordinated, Adam's mobility kept them from using their usual tactics. He could always get next to, behind, or above them, and his raw strength was enough to make their barriers worth only one spare hit to them. "I need to do something about that runic control orb."

Into the radio he asked, "are you guys ok if I step away?"

"Yeah, boss, we'll be fine."

"Don't worry about us, Adam. These guys don't go down easy, but Brittney is having no trouble preventing us from taking damage," said Lucas.

"Alright," said Adam. "Let's see if I can help out the folks below."

With a roar to momentarily stun his enemies, Adam leapt high into the air. He was about half a mile from the control pillar and runic orb. With a nod of determination, he used [Gladiator's Approach] on the furthest Drathan he could reach with the pseudo-skill, and then it came time to push his way towards the Runic Control Orb.
