Book 11A - The Debt - Chapter 18

The Water one went down just as fast.

The boss had the same moves; it just tried to pummel Ether, while Fray kept cutting off one of the arms. In just a few minutes, Aelin and I hit the boss core, and the fight was over.

"The Dispatcher's Dungeon isn't going to be this easy, is it?" Fray picked up the thick, red chestplate and looked it over. "It says Slime Plate." She rasped her knuckles on it, releasing a noise similar to if it had been metal. "It's solid, but not that heavy."

"It's still transparent." Ether shook her head. "There's no way I'm wearing that."

"You already wear insulation under your armor." Aelin winked. "So it's not like you'd be running around naked."

"Naked enough." The Tank took the boss crystal and item from Fray. "We can bin it."

"Okay!" Gesai walked in and motioned for us to follow her back out. "Before we do the next one, we need to talk about statuses."

"We've already fought things that can poison." Aelin piped up. "Justia can cure those."

"I know…" Our teacher looked over at her cousin. "You're going to get some work in on this one. I know that no one has been getting hit much at all, and Ether can take a lot more of a beating now, but burns are something else."

I was the last one through the gate, and once I was through, she turned to the pad on the gate and typed the instructions for the next floor. As soon as we were on the fifth floor, she continued her lecture.

"The heat that you're going to be experiencing in there is going to be hot enough to burn you, and if it latches onto you, it can cause serious burns." Gesai pulled up the monster card and showed us.

"Seventeen Power!" Ether shouted, then covered her mouth when she realized how loud she'd been. "That's the strongest thing we've ever fought."

"About that…" Gesai typed on the menu of her CB. "We need to spend your extra points to bring up your Defense."

"Are you going to spend some of my extra points to bring up my stats as well?" I'd been asking to increase my stats, but so far, I had nine free stat points and hadn't been allowed to spend them so I wouldn't seem too strong.

"We can bring your Magic up to fourteen." Gesai swapped over and made the changes.

The sensation that ran through me was a mixture of electricity, ice, and heat. It was almost like I was being tickled on the inside, which wasn't the most pleasant sensation.

"There." Gesai smiled. "Now you've got the same Magic as most other Casters your level."

"Thanks…" I shivered for a moment before I looked at Ether and my new stats without the masking effect of the seal.

"Now, as I was saying, make sure you minimize contact with the slime. Once you're burned, getting hit in the same spot as the burn will hurt a LOT more." The silver woman triggered the gate to open. "Also, be aware that it can counter with a fireball while you're shooting at it, so don't stand still."

"Gotcha." I looked over at Aelin. "I think we're going to need to use more of the right side."

"We'll be fine!" The blonde stepped up to the gate. "Let's go!"

I shook my head. "We might be overpowered, but that doesn't mean we need to charge into danger. If we don't respect the Dungeon, one of these times it's going to be us that becomes the cautionary tale."

"Then we can start being cautious once it gets difficult." Aelin grinned. "I mean, the two of you are already better than level nines, so how hard can this be?" She ducked into the portal.

"That's our Aelin, fearless as ever." I sighed. "Alright, let's go."

Ether walked through the portal, with me right behind her. I just hoped she hadn't jinxed us.
