Silver Spoon Series

Volume 3: Interlude I

Thadrick was having a difficult time. Ever since his role in the dungeon had ended, he had felt like he lost something. Everyone else in their community was ecstatic. The mana density in the area had risen immensely and they were still discovering new deposits of ores, many of which they had never found before.

A few of the residents, like Thadrick, had also gotten more personal rewards. On returning to his home mountain, Thadrick had been presented with a new quartz class stone, guardian. Absorbing the stone was an exciting moment, and his family had been thrilled. Something was off though, it took him a while to figure out that he longed to share the good news with someone.

The problem was that the someone he wanted to share it with wasn't there. Before their opportunity to join a tutorial, Thadrick had only seen a few humans and had never really interacted with one. His memories of the dungeon were a little foggy, but he remembered one person who stood out.

The Network, or the dungeon core, intentionally messed with peoples' memories when they returned from their volunteer missions. It was meant to protect them from having any ill effects of what happened inside. It was possible to regain all that had occured, but it took time and meditation to achieve. You had to show the Network that you really wanted to remember.

After a few days of his strange melancholy, Thadrick decided he needed to remember more. He spent six hours meditating on his experience, and was left feeling worse instead of better. The things he had done while under the dungeon's control were incredible. Yes, he had been the sidekick, but what he had accomplished was valuable, important. Nothing he had ever done in his real life could measure up to rescuing all those captives from his village, or helping to hold off a horde of kobolds so that Alan could stop an evil ritual.

A case of theft: this story is not rightfully on Amazon; if you spot it, report the violation.

Alan. Thadrick had many friends, but he had felt closer to that intriguing human than he ever had to even his own sister. It was a double headed monster that plagued him now. One was the loss of such a good friend, knowing that the chances of them ever meeting again were almost non-existent, and the other was that it was unlikely he would accomplish such great deeds again.

Sure, now Thadrick had two classes and he could move up in the world. He could continue to be a miner, but move to rarer and more dangerous areas, or he could become a guard at one of the major cities in the mountain. Another, less likely option, was for him to join the dwarven Army. All of these would be better and more exciting than his old life, but they couldn't live up to his time in the dungeon.

For quite a while, Thadrick went through the motions. He couldn't make a decision on what to do next, so he simply continued as he had before, his life on autopilot. Then, one day, something changed. As it was for so many people, it was a Network notification that offered him just the opportunity he had been looking for. He now knew what he wanted to do, all that was left was to say his goodbyes.

He would miss his friends and family, but this was the ticket to something great, he just knew it. After purchasing everything he might need, there was nothing left to do. Once more, Thadrick was going to put himself at the mercy of the Network, but the reward this time was so much better than ever before. Willing his acceptance, the world around him faded to black. Even though he couldn't see or feel anything, he knew his body was shaking with excitement.
