Silver Spoon Series

Volume 2: Interlude V

Roger stood and thanked his latest visitor for coming. Today was one of the days where he scheduled time for open appointments. Anyone in the village who had a concern or an idea was welcome to drop in and share.

It had seemed like a good idea, and it did help keep morale high, but it was only practical because the village was still so small. It had also occasionally led to a good idea. However, most drop-ins were people just wanting to gripe, like the villager just leaving his office now. She had been upset that the house next to hers was bigger than her own.

He had tried to explain that it was because her house had been built before they had earned the upgraded blueprint for a small house, but she thought that since she had lived here longer, that she should have been given the nicer house. Never mind the fact that she lived alone, while her neighbors were a couple.

Normally this might have gotten on his nerves, but it was better than dealing with Chrisly and his father. With the village's dungeon getting ready to spawn another boss soon, he had been forced to accept their proposition. He would have to try and keep the recruits out of his village, but he had thought of a way to do that, while also maybe not making them enemies. He would have to see how it worked when the tier opened up.

In the meantime, there were still a few things that needed doing. Roger had finally assigned a crew to craft a Town Board. It wasn't all that taxing in terms of materials, but it did require some special items that had only recently become available. There also hadn't really been a need for one, since only serf's lived in Elstree, and most likely none of them would be able to complete any of the quests.

Having a Town Board was a requirement, however. Technically it wasn't required, but there would be some serious penalties imposed on the village by the Tutorial if they didn't have one up in time for the recruits arrival. It was one of the things the tutorial was supposed to teach them about as they passed through the zone.

Roger also needed to check in on the progress of their waterwheel. The beer that Chrisly had taken back to his family had actually impressed them enough that Roger had managed to trade for the design of the structure from the town.

Technically, you could share as many blueprints as you wanted for free, but that just wasn't how things worked in the Network. The knowledge was valuable, so mayors tended to hoard theirs unless they could get something good in return. Roger had to promise them two barrels of beer a week for two months to get that blueprint. It was a large portion of their total production at the moment, but the waterwheel was an important feature for several structures.

Unfortunately, Roger didn't have a blueprint for any type of mill that they might attach to it, but it would be up and running for when he did get his hands on one. Whether it was for grinding grain, sawing wood, or even helping Smith with his forging, there were many applications.

Another issue was that they would also be getting another batch of settlers soon, and with those people would also come the opening of the village to the tutorial recruits. Roger was doing everything to prepare, and soon he would find out if it meant anything.

Would this tutorial have pacifists who would gladly work with the existing residents, or would there be a xenophobic race who would slaughter everyone on sight? He had heard of both things happening, and there were plenty of options in between, but every night he worried about what he would do if a party of recruits decided that the best way to advance was to murder him. The sad truth was, there wasn't anything he could do. Chrisly sure wasn't going to hang around and protect him.

Enough worrying, it was time for his next drop in. Hopefully this was an idea visit and not another petty complaint. Although, as long as the complaints were minor, it meant he was doing a good job. Opening the door, Roger gestured for the next villager to come in.

In his most cheerful tone, Roger greeted him as they sat down in his office. "Welcome Kyle, what's on your mind today?"

"Well, you know I was one of the first settlers in Elstree, and while I appreciate that I was able to get a house early on, it's just so far from the fields now. These new settler's have houses right next to where they work and I have to walk all the way across the village. It just doesn't seem fair."

Roger kept a smile on his face as he listened. It seemed he had another petty complaint. This one was especially galling since 'all the way across the village' was barely a hundred meters. He tried to remember that he wanted this job.
