Progenitor's Burden

Chapter 2.52: Nest Busting

Sinclair tightened his grip on the axe, the worn leather hilt conforming to his palm like a pact renewed. Beside him, Chewy and Leia crouched low, hackles raised and ears flat, their instincts keyed to the danger radiating from the tunnel ahead. Brace yourselves, he whispered across the mental link, though he wasn't sure it was for them or himself.

She lunged from the shadows in a blur of venomous limbs and chitin plates, each movement impossibly fast for her grotesque size. Sinclair activated Fenrir's Fury in the same breath, the world tilting as wind howled around him. Power surged through his limbs. He pivoted hard, axe arcing through the space where the monster had just been.

The queen recovered instantly and came at him again, limbs slashing in a frenzy. Sinclair blocked high with the haft of his axe, the impact jolting through his shoulder like he'd caught a battering ram. She was strong—brutally strong.

Chewy and Leia engaged their opponents, smaller hornets that had poured in behind the queen. Each was grotesque in its own right—bloated thoraxes, dripping mandibles, wings that hissed with each beat. The direwolves fought back-to-back, a coordinated storm of claws and teeth. Leia's war collar flared with bursts of pale energy, each blast searing through chitin and leaving scorched husks in its wake.

Sinclair ducked under another sweeping limb. He was fast, but the queen was quicker, more agile than anything her bulk suggested. Every strike he launched was countered, parried, or narrowly evaded. Her attack pattern was erratic, feral. No rhythm to anticipate—just relentless violence.

With a growl, Sinclair shifted tactics. Mana surged to his arms, and he activated Hel's Wrath. His axe ignited with incandescent blue light, runes blazing to life along the blade's edge. As she came at him again, he stepped in—not away—and unleashed a sweeping arc of raw force.

The queen reeled as the strike cleaved across her ribbed side, a spray of sickly green ichor painting the stones. She shrieked, her voice a warped cry of agony—but her fury only deepened. Limbs clawed at the ground, and with terrifying speed, she hurled herself back at him.

Pain exploded in Sinclair's leg as one of her barbs ripped through his thigh. He staggered, breath hitching. Gritting his teeth, he yanked a potion from his belt and drank, feeling the wound knit shut beneath his armor, though the ache remained deep in the muscle.

A cry from Chewy snapped his attention sideways.

One of the smaller hornets had latched onto the wolf's flank, its mandibles buried deep. Sinclair didn't think—he reacted. He hurled his axe, mana flaring as Telekinesis guided its flight. The weapon tore through the air, cleaving the creature clean off Chewy and arching back to Sinclair's outstretched hand.

With a shriek that rattled the walls, she launched forward, barbs outstretched, aimed square at his chest.

Sinclair didn't think. He reached for the Will of the Norns and poured everything into it—pain, fury, instinct. The magic took hold; it was not freezing time, but staggering it. The queen faltered mid-lunge, her brood recoiling as if struck by an unseen force.

He threw himself to the side, pushing his battered body into motion as the barbs passed within inches of his chest. Wind from the strike ripped past him, sharp enough to sting. He hit the ground hard but rolled to his feet, already re-engaging.

There was no pause. No time for relief. The wounds from the Behemoth fight still ached beneath the adrenaline, and the queen's venom burned like coals behind his ribs. But there was no room for weakness. He drove forward, axe rising again, caught in the rhythm of survival—the brutal, blood-soaked ballet of close combat.

Behind him, Chewy and Leia fought like beasts possessed. Chewy's limp slowed him, but his jaws remained deadly, snapping through thorax and wing alike. Leia's war collar surged again, lightning lancing across the room and vaporizing two hornets mid-flight. But even victory had a cost. Her movements grew sluggish, and the spark behind her eyes dimmed with exhaustion.

In a back-and-forth that was as much a test of endurance as skill, Sinclair and the queen hornet traded blows. Each attack Sinclair landed chipped away at the creature's carapace, but also drained him further. His mana was nearly depleted, and he felt the aching protest of his muscles with each swing of his axe. He had health potions, but gulping one down would require a break in combat he couldn't afford.

Just as he dodged another frenzied swipe from the creature, Sinclair caught sight of Chewy and Leia finishing off the last of the lesser beasts. His heart soared. Relief and a renewed sense of purpose flooded his veins, momentarily overpowering the fatigue and pain. With a telepathic signal, he called his companions to his side.

The battle dynamic shifted. What had been a desperate struggle for survival became a coordinated offensive. Chewy and Leia flanked the creature, diverting its attention and allowing Sinclair to land a series of brutal hits. Their synergy was a spectacle—three warriors moving in harmony, each covering the others' weaknesses, united in purpose and resolve.

Sinclair felt the battle's tide turn in their favor, but also knew they were racing against the clock. Their accumulated injuries were taking a toll, and their stamina was dwindling even faster than it should have been. The creature was resilient, its alien anatomy capable of enduring punishment that would have felled any Earth-born foe.

Sinclair grimaced as he felt the creature's spear-like mandible pierce his side, a hot lance of pain shooting through his body. His vision momentarily blurred, and for a second, he felt as if he were teetering on the brink of consciousness. But his resolve hardened. He was Sinclair, the first Wolf Lord of this new world, and he would not falter now.

Gritting his teeth against the pain, he summoned what remained of his energy, focusing it into the very core of his being. His Will of the Norns flared brightly, a beacon of indomitable will. The creature was visibly slowed under the weight of his aura pumping out of him in waves.

Seizing this momentary advantage, Chewy and Leia launched themselves at the monster. Their jaws snapped with bone-crushing force at its vulnerable joints, eliciting a screech of pain and rage from the creature. Its mandible withdrew from Sinclair's side as it swiveled its head to deal with the new threats, giving him the needed opportunity.

Ignoring the pain and blood flow from his wound, Sinclair channeled his mana into his axe. With an anguished cry, he swung it in a high arc, pouring all of his remaining strength into the blow. His axe came down with a thunderous crash, cleaving through the creature's armored head and embedding itself deep within.

For a moment, time seemed to freeze. The creature let out one final, ear-piercing screech that reverberated through the cavern before collapsing to the ground, its numerous limbs twitching in a final death spasm.

Exhausted, Sinclair staggered back, his axe slipping from his fingers to clatter on the ground. He looked at Chewy and Leia, both panting heavily but standing tall, their eyes meeting him with a mix of relief and triumph. The mental bond they shared pulsed with their collective emotions: exhaustion, pain, but above all, victory.

Sinclair slowly lowered himself to the ground, leaning his back against the still-warm corpse of the monstrous queen. He made a mental note to stop using corpses as loungers, or he was afraid the system would award him a throne one day of monster parts. He pulled his axe handle towards his lap and took a deep, shuddering breath as he downed another healing potion, the liquid fire racing through his veins to mend his injuries. He felt off drinking another one so fast. A thought swam to the surface of his mind with information he knew he had never known.

Taking too many potions back to back would limit their efficacy and even have negative side effects if not monitored closely. Well, that was just great, he thought to himself. It was too good a thing to be able to streamline potion, he assumed. He got to thinking about his stamina, too, and why it was being used up so rapidly, and realized he was getting more information. It had to come from that information dump he got from Turgrin. Constantly depleting his stamina and taking the damage he had without real rest would leave him with a hollowed-out stamina. It might look full and "felt OK," but it was consumed faster and was less efficient than if he were well-rested. Sighing to himself at one more thing he would have to keep track of, he let his head roll back as he rested a little.

His regeneration abilities were already at work, but he knew it would take time to fully recover, especially from the brutal damage to his side. For now, he was content to sit, to rest, and to share this hard-fought moment of respite with his loyal companions.

They were all breathing hard, their breaths coming in unsteady gasps, their bodies were battered and slowly breaking down. "Don't worry guys we'll go home soon", Sinclair muttered. As Sinclair closed his eyes, a sense of accomplishment washed over him, even as the sounds of their labored breathing filled the cavern. Sinclair slowly fell asleep right there against the Myrkr in a cavern that was miles underground in essentially enemy territory.

Chewy and Leia vigilantly patrolled the chamber, their keen eyes scanning for any lurking threats that could endanger Sinclair. "Well, little sister, can you believe it? I've finally reached level 25," Chewy mused, his voice tinged with a mixture of awe and introspection. "Who would've thought we'd find ourselves here?"

"Agreed, it has been like being in one of the stories we were told when younger," Leia replied, her eyes narrowing as she watched Sinclair's prone form. "But it worries me how he pushes himself so relentlessly. He's trying to shoulder the weight of the world, and it's beginning to crush him. He needs stronger allies by his side, and that includes us."

Chewy sighed, his gaze settling on Sinclair, who was leaning against the massive body of the fallen Myrkr, snoring lightly. "I know, Leia. We're doing our best. Back in that pack we visited, we'd easily be the leaders. But here, facing the horrors he battles, we're pushed to our limits. Maybe it's time to ask him to activate his Huginn and Muninn skill, and see if there's something more we can do to help."

"Or perhaps you could ask us instead," a hushed voice echoed from across the chamber. Instantly, Chewy and Leia focused their attention on the source of the sound. Emerging from the dim shadows were two wolves, even larger than they were.

Moving quickly, they positioned themselves between the newcomers and Sinclair, who was in no shape for another confrontation. "Who are you?" Leia demanded, her voice barely more than a growl. Energies gathered around her collar, blue light sparking up and down her fur as she readied her damaged body to fight to the death for her lord.

The two imposing wolves exchanged glances. "Has it really been so long that our own descendants don't recognize us?" one mused.

"It appears so," the other agreed, sounding almost forlorn. "Time has erased much, it seems. Young ones, we are the progenitors of your line, born in the service of the All-Father himself. I am Geri, and this is Freki. We've come to assess who has assumed the mantle of the Wolf Lord's chosen."

Stunned, Chewy and Leia absorbed the gravity of the revelation. "The ancient tales claimed you perished in the Sundering. Where have you been all this time?" Leia questioned, her eyes wide with disbelief.

"We've been alongside Odin, naturally," Freki answered, his tone matter-of-fact. "Where he ventures, so do we. He's expressed concern for your chosen one, Sinclair, and has sent us to assist you."

Geri stepped forward, his piercing eyes meeting theirs. "Before we offer our aid, we seek to gauge your worth. It's true that you serve a Wolf Lord, but we request that you open yourselves to us, to let us truly know you."

Chewy's ears perked up, his voice tinged with a trace of defiance. "What exactly do you mean by 'let you know us'? Are we talking about answering questions, or is this going to be some sort of trial by combat?"

"It's simple," Freki clarified. "Relax your minds and allow us to scan your memories since your first encounter with Sinclair. If we find your experiences and loyalty align with what's needed, we can offer our help."

Chewy and Leia exchanged skeptical glances, contemplating their options. The offer could be the extra help Sinclair so desperately needed. Besides, Geri and Freki were messengers of Odin, which lent a certain weight to their words.

Mutually arriving at a decision, they gave affirmative nods and relaxed their postures. Unsure of what would come next, they watched as Geri and Freki approached them, noses extended, and lightly touched each of their noses.

An eruption of light and memory enveloped them. They were yanked back through time to their first encounter with Sinclair, recalling vividly how he had defended them against the rampaging Ogre, fighting solo with all his might. The emotions of fear and pride surged anew; even back then, they had sensed his uniqueness.

They were led through a whirlwind of past experiences: battling bandits by Sinclair's side, unlocking the ability to communicate with him, and standing beside him as he sought alliances among other wolves during his formative stages. Every significant moment was laid bare, each accompanied by the vivid emotions that had defined them. Chewy and Leia found their hearts wrenching when they relived Sinclair's desolate emotional state following his futile efforts to save a village. The impact of the losses on him was palpable, freshly raw in their minds.

The emotional tapestry receded, and Chewy and Leia found themselves back in the present moment. They could feel not only their own complex mix of feelings, but also a sense of pride and melancholy emanating from Geri and Freki. The older wolves felt a sense of sorrow for what Chewy and Leia had endured and how those experiences had shaped them.

"Thank you, young ones, for sharing your journey with us," Geri began, his voice tinged with warmth and understanding. "We initially believed you were an ideal match for Sinclair, but the bonds you've forged go beyond what we anticipated. Such connections have only been rivaled by a handful of other soul pairs throughout history."

Freki turned to face Geri, locking eyes with his fellow guardian. After a moment of silent communication, they both nodded in harmonious agreement.

"In acknowledgment of your deeds and the path you've chosen," Freki announced, "we offer you our assistance in advancing your racial upgrades. Rest assured, Sinclair's safety is guaranteed under our watch. There's little left in these tunnels to threaten him—merely the remnants and riffraff of the once fearsome hoard. One of us will remain vigilant while the other assists you."

Geri rose gracefully to his paws and gestured for them to come closer. "Since you both reached the necessary level during the recent battles, go ahead and access your screens. Look for the notification regarding a racial upgrade and wait for our guidance."

With a few mental commands, Chewy and Leia opened their virtual screens and found the expected notifications. They looked back at Geri and Freki for confirmation. "Alright, what's the next step?" they inquired.

"Chewy, you can proceed first," Geri instructed. "Read aloud the choices presented to you. Unlike humanoid races that can only upgrade within their own class, animals have the option to ascend into different subspecies altogether. For example, Freki and I began as common wolves but are now Celestial Wolves."

Chewy's eyes gleamed with anticipation as he turned back to his screen. "I have two options here: TitanWolf and FrostWolf," he read aloud, clearly intrigued but also somewhat puzzled.

Species Specializations Available:

TitanWolf:

A colossal wolf species known for its unmatched physical strength and resilience. TitanWolves are natural tanks, excelling in melee combat and defensive roles, capable of withstanding massive damage while delivering powerful blows.

FrostWolf:

A wolf species attuned to the icy realms, wielding frost-based abilities to slow enemies and inflict cold damage. FrostWolves are agile and strategic, excelling in crowd control and weakening opponents with their chilling attacks.

"Think of these options as specializations," Freki clarified. "Given that you're influenced by Sinclair's titles, a TitanWolf would likely boost your physical resistance and enhance your offensive capabilities. A FrostWolf, on the other hand, leans toward magical attributes and excels in ranged combat."

Chewy was immediately drawn to the idea of becoming a TitanWolf, given Sinclair's own affinity for Titans. Making his selection, he was enveloped in an intense, blinding light that carried with it a rush of searing pain.

Species: TitanWolf

Description: The TitanWolf is a towering predator of immense power, revered for its indomitable strength and unyielding endurance. Native to the rugged and untamed wilderness, these colossal wolves are built to dominate the battlefield, serving as the ultimate protectors and enforcers of nature's will. Their thick hides and overwhelming physical presence make them nearly unstoppable in combat, while their roars inspire allies and intimidate foes.

Effects:

Titan's Resilience:

Reduces all incoming physical damage by 20%, reflecting 5% of the damage back to attackers due to their sheer bulk and hardened hide.

Earthshatter Leap:

The TitanWolf can leap into battle, creating a shockwave upon landing that damages enemies within a 10-meter radius and slows their movement speed by 30% for 5 seconds.

Alpha's Roar:

Unleashes a thunderous roar that boosts allies' attack power and defense by 10% within a 15-meter radius while reducing the morale of nearby enemies, weakening their attacks by 10%.

As the luminescence was absorbed, Chewy and Geri spoke up. "Show us your stats, please."

Name: Chewy Race: TitanWolf

Level: 25 Rank: E

Health: 1550 Stamina: 1460

Stats: Strength: 145 Agility: 136 Constitution: 155 Willpower: 81 Endurance: 146

Available Points: 0

"When he wakes up, talk to him about helping you allocate your skills instead of letting them auto apply based on the system," Freki said after reviewing his stats.

Chewy cocked his head to the side. "That is an option? I didn't know we had a choice."

Geri finished for Freki, "Normally, beasts would not, but you are not a normal beast. You are bonded to a Wolf Lord. Working together, you can make a lot of changes that will benefit you both. Without training, this link you share has been severely underutilized."

They turned their attention to Leia. "Now it's your turn. Follow the same steps." Geri said.

Leia nodded in understanding. Activating her screen, she scanned her options and read them aloud. "I can choose between GlacierWolf and AetherWolf."

Species Specializations Available:

GlacierWolf:

A wolf species attuned to the icy realms, GlacierWolves wield the power of frost to freeze and control the battlefield. Known for their resilience and precision, they specialize in slowing enemies and creating icy barriers, turning the environment to their advantage.

AetherWolf:

Mystical and elusive, AetherWolves are creatures of pure energy, channeling aetherial magic to manipulate space and time. They excel in teleportation, evasion, and creating energy-based attacks, blending agility with otherworldly power.

Geri and Freki exchanged an intrigued look as Leia made her selection. "Glacier Wolf is a fine choice, brimming with ice and cold-based skills, perhaps even some enhancements in speed. But Aetherwolf is a rarer breed, enhancing your existing magical abilities, particularly in movement and healing. You'd also likely gain a unique skill related to the Aether, a mysterious and often underestimated form of magic," Geri explained, his tone tinged with excitement.

Unable to contain her enthusiasm, Leia interjected, "I'm definitely choosing Aetherwolf." No sooner had she made her selection than her world became a swirling vortex of intense white light and searing pain.

The ethereal spheres surrounding both wolves rotated in place for over ten minutes. Finally, the light around Chewy began to dissipate. He emerged from the transformation, his eyes ablaze with a fire so intense it seemed capable of rivaling the sun. Now standing just over four feet tall at the shoulder, his powerful frame had bulked up even further.

Taking a few steps to acquaint himself with his new form, Chewy couldn't help but admire the changes. His fur had morphed into a stunning blend of silver and gunmetal, contrasting sharply with his gleaming steel-like claws. Overwhelmed with anticipation, he was eager to test out his enhanced body and new abilities. A quick glance at his status screen confirmed that his stats had received a significant boost, with a universal increase of 20 points across all attributes. To top it off, he had acquired two new, intriguing skills.

New Skill: Falling Heavens (Rare)

Description: Harness the power of the heavens to unleash a devastating ground-based attack. Falling Heavens sends shockwaves rippling through the earth, disorienting enemies and leaving them vulnerable. As the ground quakes beneath their feet, foes are thrown into chaos, their movements slowed, and their strikes weakened.

Effects:

Reduces enemy attack speed and movement speed by 20% for 6 seconds

Disorients enemies in the area, briefly reducing their accuracy

Creates an unstable terrain effect, making it harder for foes to reposition

New Skill: Iron Burden (Rare)

Description: Turn your enemies' aggression into their downfall with Iron Burden. Any foe that dares to attack the Titan Wolf is afflicted with a debilitating debuff, progressively reducing their attack speed and effectiveness. Each strike they land slows their movements further, as the oppressive weight of the Iron Burden grows heavier with every hit. Their own fury becomes their undoing, as they are left encumbered and struggling against the unstoppable power of the Titan Wolf.

Effects:

Inflicts the "Iron Burden" debuff on enemies who attack the user, reducing their attack speed by 10% for 3 seconds.

The debuff stacks up to 3 times, with each stack further slowing the attacker.

Stacks also reduce enemy agility, impairing their ability to reposition or dodge.

As Chewy reveled in his newfound power, all eyes turned back to Leia. The light surrounding her was beginning to fade, heralding the emergence of the Aetherwolf.

The orb of light that enveloped Leia finally dissipated, revealing her in her newfound form. She touched down gracefully, her size unchanged but no less imposing, standing just over three feet at the shoulder. What captured immediate attention, however, was her coat: a lustrous, pearlescent sheen that seemed to shimmer and shift in the ambient light, defying any single color description.

Taking a few exploratory steps, Leia's eyes met Chewy's new fiery gaze. "You look incredible, Chewy. You're like an aggressive, metallic wolf come to life!"

Chewy beamed, visibly pleased. "Coming from you, with that ethereal coat, that's a compliment. I gained two awesome new skills. What about you?" He quickly relayed the details of his new abilities, his voice tinged with excitement.

"Hold on, let's see," Leia called up her status screen, her eyes widening as she skimmed through the information. "They were right about the AetherWolf being powerful."

Species: AetherWolf

Description: The AetherWolf is a mystical predator born of the ethereal planes, embodying the raw power of energy and the fluidity of space. Known for their agility and otherworldly abilities, AetherWolves are masters of teleportation, disruption, and precision strikes. Temporal Reflex

: Grants a 20% increase to dodge rate and a 15% boost to movement speed for 10 seconds after using a skill, enhancing the AetherWolf's elusive nature.

"Wow, I've gained three new skills: two are passive and one's for combat."

New Skill: Healing Blizzard (Rare)

Description: Summon a swirling snowstorm that blankets the battlefield with icy winds and shimmering snowflakes. Within its frosty radius, allies are gradually healed by the soothing embrace of the cold, their wounds mending and vitality restored. Meanwhile, enemies caught in the storm are battered by relentless frost, their movements slowed and their strength sapped. Healing Blizzard provides a powerful dual effect, offering sanctuary to allies while delivering a chilling blow to foes.

Effects:

Heals allies within a 15-foot radius for 5% of their maximum health per second for 10 seconds.

Slows enemies in the area by 20% and reduces their physical attack damage by 10%.

Cooldown: 2 minutes.

New Skill: Aether Affinity (Epic)

With Aether Affinity, you channel magical energies more efficiently, allowing for greater spellcasting versatility and potency.

Effects:

Increases mana regeneration by 20%.

Boosts the effectiveness of Aether-based skills by 15%.

Passive skill, always active.

New Skill: Aether Echo (Rare)

Description: Harness the resonance of the Aether to amplify your magical prowess. Aether Echo grants your active skills a chance to trigger a second time, mirroring their effects without consuming additional mana or resources. This mystical reverberation doubles your impact, turning the tide of battle with the power of the ethereal.

Effects:

Grants a 10% chance for active skills to cast a second time automatically.

Mirrored effects do not consume additional mana or cooldown time.

Passive skill, always active.

Chewy and Leia turned their gaze to Geri and Freki, gratitude etched into their expressions. "Thank you so much for this. These new abilities will make us far more effective in the battles that lie ahead," Chewy said earnestly.

"You've earned these enhancements, make no mistake," Geri responded, his tone unequivocal. "Even without our presence, your options would have been formidable. We're limited in the direct aid we can provide, but know that we'll do whatever we can to assist. And with that, take our blessing." A swirling light left them and entered Chey and Leia. They immediately pulled their screen up, grateful for the extra help.

New Blessing: Blessing of the Twin Wolves (Unique)

Description: Bestowed by Geri and Freki, the legendary wolves of Odin, this blessing embodies the duality of strength and cunning. The Blessing of the Twin Wolves grants unparalleled synergy between raw power and strategic precision, empowering the bearer to channel the primal instincts of the Allfather's loyal companions. With Geri's ferocity and Freki's guile, the recipient becomes an unstoppable force on the battlefield, capable of adapting to any challenge with devastating efficiency.

Effects:

Predator's Unity:

Increases physical and magical attack power by 15% when fighting alongside allies, reflecting the strength of a pack united in purpose.

Relentless Pursuit:

Grants a 20% boost to movement speed and attack speed for 10 seconds after defeating an enemy, allowing the bearer to chain attacks seamlessly.

Wolf's Tenacity:

When reduced below 30% health, temporarily increases damage resistance by 25% and restores 10% health over 5 seconds, representing the unyielding spirit of Geri and Freki.

Freki sauntered over to where Sinclair lay. "I'd recommend heading home soon; they'll need you there. If you proceed through the tunnel over there, you can eradicate the nests this creature was constructing. That route will eventually lead you back to the main tunnel you descended from." With that message, Freki nudged Sinclair with her nose before they faded away in the darkness of the room. A brilliant flash of light enveloped Sinclair, and he jolted awake.

Disoriented, he blurted out, "What— who's there? Chewy? Leia? Where are you?" His voice carried a tone of grogginess and confusion.

The two wolves stood patiently, allowing Sinclair the moments he needed to reorient himself. When his eyes finally focused and fell upon them, his reaction was nothing short of priceless. His jaw dropped open, and he stared at them, utterly speechless at the sight of their remarkable transformations.

"Um, Chewy, Leia, is that you? What happened to you? Are you ok? How long was I out?" Some desperation had creeped into his voice as he was still fighting off the grogginess that threatened to send him back to sleep if he didn't push through.

"We have much to discuss, but the urgency of returning home can't be ignored. Let's move quickly and fill you in as we go," Leia advised.

Without a moment's hesitation, Sinclair swiftly gathered his gear and looted the fallen monsters. Turning to Chewy and Leia, he simply said, "Lead the way." His unequivocal trust in them was one of the many qualities that endeared him to the pair. He didn't ask for explanations or hesitate; he knew they'd share everything in due course.

Buoyed by this silent affirmation of their bond, the trio wheeled around in unison and dashed through the tunnel, each step bringing them closer to home and the respite they so earnestly desired.
