Progenitor's Burden

Interlude: Surprises

Interlude: Surprises

Beyond the atmosphere, silence reigned in Kafor and Heroti's ship. "The portals are connecting to real places? On other planets? That's not possible. The entire premise of the portals is that they connect to ephemeral realms, not to tangible worlds with their own histories."

Kafor took a moment, breathing deeply, trying to process. The wolves' story was something from ancient folklore, fairytales almost. How could such tales hold a grain of truth? And the connection to the darkness slowly consuming the distant planets; it seemed too far-fetched. But the evidence was there, right in front of him.

If Earth was one of those planets, having narrowly evaded annihilation, it'd make sense why it had ley lines in the first place. But their damage was extensive, indicating a past filled with turmoil and conflict. Kafor's heart raced. There were so many questions. If Earth had indeed escaped the shadow that devoured worlds, then the implications were massive. They weren't just dealing with a new world; they were potentially facing a past that had almost seen the planet's end.

Heroti meticulously traced the ley lines, observing as the nodes intricately mended the existing structures. All the gears were in motion for the system to become operational within a day or two. However, it would likely be a month before the energy levels peaked enough to allow interaction. As the days passed, Earth's denizens would unknowingly absorb the subtle ambient mana, priming them for their impending metamorphoses.

The subtlety of the overall power surge hinted at the prowess of the entity they had sensed at the planet's core. The modifications it had made to the tutorial seemed effortless, indicating an immense potency. In all likelihood, given the tales they'd heard, this being was divine. They weren't in a position to challenge or deter its plans.

Thus far, the alterations it had introduced were beneficial, even if they sometimes seemed cruel. Typically, the difficulty of each quest had been greatly heightened, either directly or through the removal of the intended support structures. Even the new "Retrieve What Was Taken" quest appeared within Sinclair's grasp. With the impressive stats he had accrued, the challenge was surmountable, contingent on his resolve and endurance.

The newest quest was a new escalation to the changes; it appeared that something valuable had indeed been stolen: Sinclair's trio of friends. They had been whisked away to a distant corner of the area he had just been introduced to, but there was a catch; there was an incoming onslaught. Worst of all, the monster levels ranged from 44 to 56, representing an extraordinary increase over what Sinclair had faced thus far.

Yet, Sinclair's unique approach was paying dividends, and he looked to be up to the challenge. Between his acquired equipment and rigorous training, he had accumulated a whopping 329 stat point increases, with another 50 banked for when he finally ascended in levels and reached level 10. Such a strategy—banking points and strategically enhancing stats—was unheard of, and for good reason: when someone leveled up, whether they assigned the additional points or not was immaterial, they still gained the level. Sinclair, however, appeared to have the unique ability to choose when the system recognised the increase in levels, meaning he continued to benefit from the increased rate of development granted to all system novices. The results were undeniable. Sinclair had zero levels, as if he had joined the system only hours ago, yet his growth, unhampered by the slowing rate inherent to level increases, mirrored that of a Level 65 veteran. Admittedly, he did not have the combat experience typical of that level, as he had done in two weeks what would have taken anyone else months or years to achieve.

They were treading on unfamiliar ground. The concept of not knowing or controlling the situation was foreign to them. For eons, they had been subjugated by the Architect's designs and intentions. Now, their experiment, their creation, was being meddled with. While the results showed promise and marked advancements, the unpredictability of it all was unsettling. Would they need to recalibrate their approach in future iterations? Uncertainty cast a shadow over their deliberations.

The invisible pull to exit the system was gradually intensifying. They might have the capability to delay the inevitable, but the binding agreement they had made with The System meant there was a finite limit to their procrastination.

Their priority was clear: establish communication with the planet's entity. In two days, the nodes would be fully operational, and once active, they would attempt to connect, seeking critical insights. Clarity was essential—and time was running out.

Heroti spoke up. "There's a palpable shift in the world's energy. The ley lines, the nodes, everything seems... more vibrant, more alive."

Kafor's brow furrowed. "It's as though the world itself is responding to Sinclair's progress. Do you think it's the influence of the entity at the planet's core?"

Heroti pursed her lips, pondering. "It's possible. Or maybe Sinclair's presence and actions are acting as a catalyst, nudging the world's inherent energy into action."

A brief silence fell as both contemplated the implications. "We've always approached our tasks with the belief that we're guiding the subjects, controlling the narrative." Kafor finally said. "But what if it's the other way around? What if the world, and its inhabitants, are in turn influencing us, guiding our actions?"

Heroti's eyes gleamed with excitement. "It's a symbiotic relationship. The world learns and grows from our interventions, and we, in turn, adapt based on the world's reactions. This could revolutionize how we approach our roles."

Kafor's gaze returned to the projections. "There's another concern. Sinclair's growth, while impressive, might also make him a beacon. A target. Other entities, other powers might take an interest."

Heroti's expression grew somber. "That's a risk. But it's also an opportunity. If Sinclair can navigate these challenges, it will only further validate our experiment's success."

Kafor sighed. "There's so much at stake, Heroti. We can't afford any mistakes."

She placed a reassuring hand on his shoulder. "We'll navigate this together, Kafor. Remember, it's not just about guiding. It's also about learning and adapting."

Kafor nodded, his gaze unfocused as he processed their discussion. "There's a lot we don't know about this mysterious entity at the heart of the planet. But the one thing that's clear is its power. It's not just affecting Sinclair—it's changing the very fabric of this reality."

A chime echoed in the monitoring chamber, and a new projection sprang to life. A series of intricate patterns and symbols depicting the planet's energy fluctuations. Heroti quickly studied the data. "It's just as I suspected we feared," she whispered. "There's an increasing synchronization between Sinclair's energy output and the ley lines."

Kafor grimaced, "So, it's not just mere influence. There's a deeper connection."

Heroti pointed at a sequence on the display, "See here? Every time Sinclair achieves a significant milestone or unlocks a latent potential, there's a corresponding spike in the planet's energy grid."

Kafor considered this. "So, what are you suggesting? That Sinclair's growth isn't just benefiting him but the entire world?"

She nodded. "Exactly. His journey isn't just personal—it's intrinsically tied to the fate of this world. Perhaps even to the entity itself."

The weight of their responsibility pressed heavily on Kafor. "So, we can't just observe. We need to ensure his safety. If anything were to happen to him..."

Heroti finished his sentence, "It could disrupt the balance we've been working so hard to maintain."

Kafor straightened, his resolve evident. "We must find a way to communicate directly with the entity. Understand its motives. If Sinclair is as important as we believe, then we need to be prepared for all possibilities."

Heroti's face was etched with determination. "Agreed. Let's start by mapping the entity's energy signatures. If we can find a way to harmonize our frequencies with it, we might be able to establish a direct line of communication."

The two began their task, working in tandem, their fingers dancing over the consoles as they dived deeper into the mysteries of the planet.

With the smallest action, the universe

Unbeknownst to them, their actions were setting the stage for events that would shape the destiny of not just one world but many realms beyond.
