Seven Beautiful Goddesses Want Me, But I Just Want My Revenge

Chapter 240: Defeating the Morribane...

Selene darted toward the Morribane, her movements sharp and precise as if she had fought such a beast a hundred times before. The creature roared, its grotesque wings spreading wide as it charged to meet her, claws tearing through the air with terrifying speed.

Adrian watched for a split second before moving into position, his fiery chains snapping to life around his arm.

He had to trust Selene's analysis—if she could keep the beast occupied, he might find the opening they needed.

The Morribane swiped at Selene with a clawed paw the size of a shield, its blackened fur glinting faintly in the dim light. She ducked low, rolling under the attack and slashing upward with her dagger.

The blade struck true, carving into the leathery underside of the beast's wing. It let out an enraged bellow, twisting to strike again.

Selene sprang back, landing in a crouch as she studied the creature. It's fast, but predictable. It telegraphs its strikes. Focus on the eyes and wings.

"Adrian!" she called over her shoulder as she evaded another swipe. "It's slow to turn. Aim from the side!"

Adrian nodded, circling around the beast. His fiery chains lashed out, striking the creature's flank and drawing its attention. The Morribane turned toward him, its multiple eyes blinking in unison as it bared its jagged teeth.

"You want me?" Adrian muttered. "Fine."

He swung his sword, the chains coiling around it as he struck for one of the creature's legs. The blade connected, but the Morribane's hide was tougher than he expected, and the blow only managed to graze it.

The creature let out another roar and charged at Adrian with a speed that's surprising for its large size. Adrian rolled out of the way, the creature's claws raking through the ground where he had just stood.

Selene seized the opening, darting in from the side.

Her dagger flashed as she targeted one of the creature's glowing eyes, but the Morribane flinched at the last moment, its wing snapping out like a whip. The leathery appendage caught her mid-strike, sending her skidding across the ground.

"Selene!" Adrian shouted, his fiery chains lashing out to cover her retreat. The chains wrapped around one of the beast's hind legs, pulling tight and forcing it to stumble.

Selene pushed herself to her feet, shaking off the impact. "I'm fine," she said curtly in a voice as cold as her expression. Her silver eyes glowed faintly as she charged back into the fray.

The Morribane reared up on its hind legs, its wings spreading wide as it let out a deafening roar.

Dust and debris filled the air, the force of the sound reverberating through the narrow tunnel. Adrian shielded his face with his arm, his chains retracting momentarily as he braced against the shockwave.

Selene, however, didn't falter.

She darted forward, her dagger aimed for the creature's exposed chest. The blade struck true, sinking into the thin membrane between its ribs and wing joint. The beast roared in pain, twisting violently to shake her off.

She held on, her dagger tearing through flesh as the creature thrashed. But its movements were too strong, and she was flung to the ground with a hard thud.

"Selene, stay back!" Adrian called, his chains snapping out to entangle the beast's other leg.

"No," she said flatly, picking herself up. She spoke in a calm voice, which felt a bit unsettling. "It's vulnerable. We can finish this."

Adrian gritted his teeth as the Morribane broke free from his chains, its multiple eyes glowing with rage. It lunged at him, its claws tearing through the space where he had been standing just moments ago.

He dodged to the side, countering with a slash of his sword that left a deep gash along the creature's wing.

The beast howled, its focus shifting between Adrian and Selene as it tried to determine which target posed the greater threat.

Selene moved first.

She sprinted toward the Morribane with a speed that left even Adrian momentarily stunned. She leapt onto its back, her dagger plunging into the base of one wing.

The creature screeched, bucking wildly to throw her off.

"Adrian!" she shouted, her voice sharp. "The eyes. Now!"

Adrian didn't hesitate.

He charged forward, his chains lashing out with pinpoint accuracy. The spear headed chains struck one of the creature's many eyes, bursting it in a spray of black ichor. The Morribane screamed, its movements growing more erratic as it tried to protect its remaining eyes.

Selene used the distraction to leap off its back, landing in a low crouch as she surveyed the creature's condition. One eye down. The wing is damaged. It's slowing, but not enough.

Adrian kept up the assault, his chains striking at the beast's face in a relentless barrage. Each hit forced the creature to retreat, its growls turning desperate as it realized it was losing ground.

Selene saw her chance. She darted forward again, her dagger aimed for the creature's other wing joint. The blade sank deep, severing the muscle and rendering the wing useless.

The Morribane staggered, its massive body swaying as it let out a final, defiant roar.

Adrian moved in for the finishing blow.

His sword glowed with fiery energy as he struck, the blade slicing through the creature's neck in one clean motion. The Morribane collapsed to the ground, its body shuddering before going still.

The silence that followed was deafening.

Adrian stood over the fallen beast, his chest heaving as he lowered his sword. His fiery chains dissipated, leaving only faint scorch marks on the stone floor.

Selene approached the body with an unreadable expression as she wiped her dagger clean.

"That was… impressive," Adrian said, his voice filled with a mix of admiration and concern.

Selene glanced at him, her silver eyes still faintly glowing. "It was necessary," she replied simply.

Adrian studied her carefully, his concern deepening. "You're different," he said quietly. "You know that, right?"

Selene's gaze shifted to the fallen beast, her expression hardening. "I'm… in control," she said, though the hesitation in her voice suggested otherwise. "Let's keep moving. There's more to this place."

Adrian nodded reluctantly, though his unease remained. As they ventured deeper into the catacombs, his thoughts churned with questions.

What's happening to her? he wondered. And what will she become by the time this is all over?
