Adrian and Lilith sprinted through the small town's narrow, winding streets, their breaths coming in short, sharp gasps.
The sound of an angry mob echoed behind them, the clatter of boots, shouts, and curses growing louder by the second. The town's residents, with pitchforks and torches in hand, were hot on their heels, their faces twisted with rage.
"Why do I feel like this is entirely your fault?" Adrian shouted over the chaos, his eyes darting around for an escape route.
Lilith, her usual playful smirk replaced by a look of genuine alarm, glanced back at the approaching mob. "Oh, come on! How was I supposed to know they'd react like this?" she retorted, her voice breathless from the exertion.
A particularly loud voice from the crowd bellowed, "There they are! Get them!" spurring the mob into an even more frenzied pursuit.
Adrian ducked as a rock whizzed past his head, barely missing him. "We need to get out of here, now!" he urged.
"Use your chains or something," Lilith advised.
"So we give them enough proof?" Adrian countered. "Nahh… let's find another way."
They turned a sharp corner and found themselves in a dead-end alley, the walls towering above them with no way to climb. Adrian cursed under his breath, his heart racing.
The mob's footsteps grew louder, the glow of their torches illuminating the alleyway.
Lilith glanced around desperately, her eyes wide with fear. "This is not how I planned our morning to go," she muttered, more to herself than to Adrian.
Adrian pressed his back against the wall, his mind racing for a solution. "How on earth did we get here?" he asked, more out of frustration than expecting an answer.
Lilith opened her mouth to respond, but the memory of how their day had started flooded back in a rush...
Flashback: The Morning After
The morning had begun so peacefully, the sun casting a warm, golden light over the city as Adrian and Lilith stepped out of the palace, refreshed and ready to embark on their journey.
The queen had bid them farewell with a smile, and with the map from Kaleb, they had planned out their course.
"Ready for another adventure?" Lilith had asked, her eyes gleaming with excitement as she wrapped her arms around Adrian on the horse.
"Always," Adrian had replied.
They had followed the map's directions, leading them to a small, seemingly idyllic town in a valley. The town was quiet, the streets lined with quaint houses and shops, and the townspeople were friendly, offering smiles and greetings as they passed.
"I have a good feeling about this place," Lilith had said, her voice filled with optimism. "Maybe we can gather some supplies and rest before heading further."
Adrian had nodded in agreement. The journey had been long, and a brief respite seemed like a good idea. They had wandered through the town, exploring its narrow streets and charming architecture.
Everything had been going smoothly—until they stumbled upon the town's central square.
A crowd had gathered in the square, surrounding a makeshift stage where a portly man in garish robes was addressing the people. His booming voice carried over the square, spouting words of fire and brimstone as he denounced various "sinners" in the town.
Lilith had rolled her eyes at the spectacle, but Adrian had felt a pang of unease. Something about the man's enthusiasm had set him on edge.
"And beware!" the man had cried, his eyes wild with fanaticism. "For among us, there may be those who consort with the dark arts! Witches, warlocks, and demons in disguise!"
Lilith had snorted softly, whispering to Adrian, "This guy is a joke."
But before Adrian could respond, the man had pointed a trembling finger in their direction. "There!" he had shouted. "I sense the presence of evil! Those two—they are not what they seem!"
The crowd had turned as one, their eyes narrowing with suspicion as they fixed their gaze on Adrian and Lilith. The once-friendly smiles had twisted into sneers, and the atmosphere instantly shifted from welcoming to hostile.
Adrian had felt his stomach drop. "We need to go," he had whispered urgently to Lilith.
But it had been too late.
The man had whipped the crowd into a frenzy, their fear and superstition overriding any rational thought. They had begun to close in on Adrian and Lilith, their voices rising in a chant of condemnation.
Lilith had tried to defuse the situation, raising her hands in a gesture of peace. "Wait, we're just travelers—"
"Lies!" the man had interrupted, his voice dripping with venom. "They are demons sent to corrupt us! Seize them!"
The crowd had surged forward, their hands reaching out to grab them. Adrian and Lilith had barely managed to dodge the first wave, their instincts kicking in as they bolted from the square.
Back to the Present
Adrian's thoughts returned to the present as the mob rounded the corner into the alley, their eyes alight with fury.
"Any bright ideas?" Adrian asked grimly as he glanced at Lilith.
Lilith's eyes darted around the alley, searching for any possible escape. Then, she spotted a small grate at the base of one of the walls, just large enough for them to squeeze through. "There!" she said, pointing.
Adrian followed her gaze and nodded, quickly moving toward the grate. He crouched down and pried it open, the metal creaking in protest. "Hurry," he urged, the mob closing in on them.
With a final, desperate effort, Adrian wrenched the grate open, revealing a narrow tunnel leading into darkness. "Go!" he ordered, motioning for Lilith to enter.
Lilith didn't hesitate, bending down so she could enter into the tunnel. Adrian followed close behind, pulling the grate shut just as the mob reached the alley.
The mob halted, confused by the sudden disappearance of their quarry.
The leader, a burly man with a thick beard, stomped forward and kicked at the grate in frustration. "Where did they go?" he bellowed.
Adrian and Lilith held their breath, their hearts pounding as they stayed hidden in the tunnel. Darkness enveloped them, and the only sound was the distant murmurs of the angry mob above.
After what felt like an eternity, the mob began to disperse, their frustration evident in their grumbled complaints.
Eventually, the alley fell silent once more.
Adrian let out a slow breath, his body relaxing slightly. "That was too close," he whispered, his voice barely audible in the confined space.
Lilith's face illuminated by the faint light filtering through the grate, gave him a shaky smile. "You think?" she quipped, her tone still tinged with adrenaline.
They remained in the tunnel for a few more minutes, waiting to be sure the coast was clear.
Finally, Adrian came forward, peering through the grate. The alley was empty, and the mob had moved on to search for their next target.
"Let's go," Adrian said quietly, helping Lilith out of the tunnel. They emerged into the alley, dusting themselves off and exchanging a glance of mutual relief.
Adrian shook his head in disbelief as they made their way out of the alley and back onto the main road. "How do we always end up in these situations?" he muttered, half-joking.
Lilith shrugged, a grin tugging at her lips. "What can I say? We just have that kind of luck."
Adrian chuckled softly despite the lingering tension in his chest. "Let's just hope the next town is a little more welcoming."
Lilith looped her arm through his, her eyes sparkling with mischief. "Where's the fun in that?" she teased, nudging him playfully.
Adrian rolled his eyes, though he couldn't help but smile. "We need to find somewhere to rest for the night," he said. "Preferably somewhere far from any angry mobs."
Lilith nodded in agreement. "Agreed. A bed sounds like heaven right now. I think we've had enough excitement for one day."
