The Incompetent Temple of the Gods
==================================
Renata was clearly still unaware of what Jiang Cheng was thinking. She turned and walked off into the distance.
Lyle, although unsure what exactly the so-called 'good show' Jiang Cheng mentioned was about, nonetheless followed along.
The group of monsters ahead was heading toward a grand and imposing building in the distance.
Upon seeing this, Lyle's pupils narrowed slightly as he prepared to get up and intercept them.
However, Jiang Cheng stretched out her hand and blocked his path.
"Don't be so hasty, my dear hero,"
Jiang Cheng said with a playful smile.
"After all, with so many guards at the Temple of the Gods, it's not like these ordinary little corrupted monsters will be able to get past them, right?"
Jiang Cheng spoke with a smile. Lyle struggled for a moment, only to realize he couldn't easily break free from her hold, so he had no choice but to reluctantly nod in agreement.
Jiang Cheng chuckled lightly and released her grip on Lyle.
Right in front of their eyes, those corrupted monsters charged towards the direction of the Temple of the Gods.
Along their route, the impoverished townspeople fled in terror—no one dared to try stopping them even for a moment.
And so, the leading giant, metallic corrupted monster threw itself forcefully against the main gates of the Temple of the Gods.
"These idiots,"
Jiang Cheng glanced over with a mocking smile.
She had once lived in the Temple of the Gods for half a year and deeply understood how terrifying the place was.
Back then, she intended to use the abilities of her other identity to analyze some of the Temple of the Gods's secrets.
But just as she was about to activate her power to investigate, her spiritual senses gave her a strong warning.
She didn't heed it and directly used her ability. In the next instant, she was blinded by the immense magical circuits and the complex flows of magic power.
One of Jiang Cheng's eyes almost ended up completely ruined, blood pouring out in a puddle.
Fortunately, with the existence of divine magic, Jiang Cheng was able to use it to forge her damaged eye into a special kind of prosthetic—an artificial eye.
Though every time she used related divine magic she still had to pay a significant price in pain and sacrifice, she had at least gained low-light vision and other auxiliary abilities.
In a way, it was a blessing in disguise for Jiang Cheng.
However, she still couldn't forget the sheer grandeur of the intricate magic arrays she'd witnessed that day.
With such powerful defenses, under normal circumstances, let alone those corrupted monsters fighting the Temple of the Gods's lackeys, just that array's protection alone would be enough to keep them out.
But... It was clear that this situation, which Jiang Cheng called a good show, meant that these corrupted monsters would not be totally useless.
So... Lyle was still wondering what unexpected twist would allow these minor corrupted monsters to break into the Temple of the Gods.
The next moment, he found out why Jiang Cheng said it would be a good show.
Another corrupted monster, with a single, towering horn, charged straight at the Temple of the Gods.
"Bang!"
At that moment—while Lyle and the rest of the onlookers all assumed nothing would come of it—
right before everyone's eyes, the intricate and mysterious magic arrays painted across the Temple of the Gods's entrance
were shattered, just like that, by that corrupted monster with the specially reinforced horn—easily, effortlessly...
Shattered.
It was not just thrown open, nor was it a dramatic display of brute force breaking through;
Rather, it was smashed—completely, utterly obliterated.
Everyone present gasped sharply—something was wrong about this!
Yet Jiang Cheng just stood there as nonchalant as ever, smiling as she looked toward Lyle and raised her brows with a hint of challenge.
"See, I told you there would be a show worth watching."
"A 'good show'?"
Lyle was stunned and internally complained for a long time—how was this a good show? This was enough to scare someone to death!
"Why didn't the barrier, and those complex magic arrays, do anything? It just..."
It was just effortlessly shattered, as if it didn't exist at all.
Lyle wanted to say as much, but for the sake of his heroic pride, he refrained from asking it out loud.
With a light chuckle, Jiang Cheng finally spoke.
"Because that wasn't really a magic array at all, just some graffiti painted on."
"What?"
Lyle was shocked. This was the barrier of a genuine Temple of the Gods branch—how could it just be some ordinary graffiti?
"Is it that hard to understand?"
Jiang Cheng replied with a smile.
"Just good old embezzlement and corruption. Your teacher should have warned you about that."
"I understand corruption and embezzlement,"
Lyle's expression turned sullen.
"But I never expected they would be this insane, embezzling even the funds for such an important protective barrier."
Jiang Cheng just smiled without saying more, because the next scenes were even more horrifying examples of this 'good show'.
Those corrupted monsters charged into the Temple of the Gods, straight at the people inside.
The Temple of the Gods was usually staffed by transcendents recruited from the local city.
Yet, when faced with the corrupted monsters...
All those supposed transcendents of the Temple of the Gods reacted even worse than the ordinary poor folk did earlier.
Not a single one of them even dared to stand up and resist.
The transcendents of Adventurer City's mighty Temple of the Gods showed not a shred of adventuring spirit.
They simply scattered and ran. A few managed to calm down and cast spells, but most were only using control spells. Any corrupted monster that was hit merely stalled for a moment before resuming the slaughter.
"How useless..."
Lyle couldn't help sighing. If he hadn't seen for himself that they weren't hurt, he'd have considered rushing in to save them.
To think those transcendents were being chased like that.
Soon, the corrupted monsters swept through one side of the Temple of the Gods like a black storm.
They cleaned out the transcendents as autumn wind sweeps fallen leaves, and soon withdrew.
"All right, show's over. Let's go."
Jiang Cheng shrugged and pulled Lyle out of the crowd.
"That's it?"
"We were just strolling by and saw something interesting, that's all,"
Jiang Cheng said with another playful smile.
Lyle could tell Jiang Cheng was lying, but he didn't bother to ask further; she wouldn't tell him anyway.
So Lyle walked ahead, with Jiang Cheng quietly following behind.
At some point, a new figure appeared behind Jiang Cheng—Renata.
"Did you get it?"
Jiang Cheng asked cheerfully.
"No,"
Renata sighed softly.
"So you all really do have to follow the official procedure tomorrow, after all,"
Jiang Cheng chuckled, walking closer.
"Do you really think you have any chance of being approved?"
Like the devil herself, Jiang Cheng began testing her rhetoric again.
"Of course not,"
Renata replied, evidently not swayed by all this.
"But whether there's a chance or not, we have to try."
Renata's voice sounded again. Jiang Cheng frowned slightly, shrugged, and caught up with Lyle.
"Hey, wait for me. Let's go home."
