Warhammer Divine Throne

Chapter 140: Ominous Prophecy

Lake God Witch Mogiana, the first Divine Chosen of the Lake Fairy, her representative in the mortal world, in some perspectives, she holds more power than the King. The Dukes can often disregard the King's orders, but when the Lake God Witch steps in to mediate, most Dukes will obediently comply.

However, this Divine Chosen does not often appear before people. Her whereabouts are unpredictable. Sometimes, she guides knights on the Path of the Holy Grail; other times, she performs tasks similar to a Prophet, guiding people from the chaos within to the light, steering them away from dreadful futures in the name of the Lady of the Lake.

But these are not her most important duties. The Lake God Witch's most crucial task is to search for prodigies with magical talent and bring them back to Fairy Lake. Afterward, these young ones will be taken to the Divine Kingdom of the Lake Fairy. The girls will be trained to become Lake God Prophets and return to the mortal world, while the boys will disappear forever.

This actually involves a very dark secret. After Laine visited the Divine Kingdom of the Lake Fairy, he understood the fate of these boys — the Lake Fairy has a long-term trade contract with the wood elves living in the forests, and the goods are these boys.

Even though he had guessed the truth, Laine had no objections. Untrained children with magical talent growing up would be mere guides for Chaos Demons; keeping these traitors is a disaster. Moreover, the Lake Fairy indeed gives these families a chance — before a certain age, if the family can send their child to another caster organization or simply send them to the Imperial Royal Wizard Academy for training, the Lake Fairy never stops them.

Compared to what the Judicial Court does (where all Spiritualists are either sacrificed live to the Emperor or executed, leaving one in 10's power of N for training), the Lake Fairy is already quite considerate.

So what business does Her Highness the Lake God Witch have with him? Laine immediately proceeded to greet her.

In the small wine castle of the Gene Vineyard, Laine met Mogiana. She was pondering something, and upon seeing Laine, she smiled: "The Lady entrusted me with some gifts for you, Champion of the Lady, you need not refuse, just accept them."

"Uh... okay!" Laine could only comply, though upon confirming what the Lake God Witch had delivered, the Baron was surprised and then... delighted.

The Lake God Witch had sent two thousand Gold Crowns, five sets of full standard knight equipment, fifteen sets of furniture, thirty pounds of finely milled wheat flour, and thirty pairs of stockings.

The stockings produced by Fairy Lake are handcrafted by the Lake God Prophets using Unicorn hair. They're truly high-end goods, with the best elasticity and texture. Laine thanked her repeatedly and accepted everything without modesty.

However... what did the Lady send these for? Could it be that my preferences have been... it seems so. The time I spend with Veronica... she watches me often, Laine thought with some embarrassment.

"Laine Macado, your fate is completely shrouded in a dreadful fog. I cannot foresee your future, but the Lady deems you the Kingdom's last hope. Therefore, I have something to tell you." Mogiana's emerald eyes gazed at Laine. She bore some resemblance to the Lake Fairy, but her features were sharper, lacking the gentle beauty of the Lake Fairy.

"I will listen." Laine gestured for Mogiana to sit on the sofa in the reception room on the second floor of the wine castle and then sat across from her.

As the Divine Chosen Champion of the Lake Fairy, he had the right to do so.

"Black, black shadows are coveting this land. I have seen it; I have seen the World Tree weeping, Chaos corrupting this land, and our fates like flickering candles in the wind, unstable." Mogiana murmured, seemingly speaking to no one, her voice filled with deep pessimism.

Laine furrowed his brow. He wondered if the person before him was truly the Lady's first Divine Chosen.

"I don't understand your meaning, Her Highness Mogiana," Laine said gravely.

"...I have been troubled by a dark prophecy for a long time, but that isn't what I want to discuss." Mogiana shook her head painfully, then continued, "I have foreseen that the summer's Knightly War will be fraught with danger, and I saw your figure in the prophetic illusion. Be careful, Champion of the Lady, be very careful."

"I understand, and I also ask Her Highness Mogiana to take care herself." Laine hesitated slightly but still said, "If it's really troubling, I might be able to help you."

"I don't need your help; I can manage on my own." As Laine anticipated, Mogiana firmly rejected his goodwill. To help her counter the prophecy, Laine would surely have to enter her mind. Her refusal was very understandable.

"I have other matters to attend to. Lord Laine, please feel free to see yourself out." Mogiana made no extended stay. She sat down, spoke a few words, and then left with several Lake God Prophets. No one knew what she was going to do.

She was always so enigmatic and unpredictable.

Thinking of this, Laine called for Amelia.

The young maid dressed in a white maid outfit approached, "Mr. Laine?"

"Amelia, I have something to tell you. I have spoken with Duke of Winford, Francois, and arranged for you to go to Winford College. You'll attend school there with Miss Surya!" Laine instructed.
