Jyera World Apocalypse

Chapter 89: Bloodlust Part 1

Kaelor Coastal City - Metro Station No. 27 - Day 96 of the 2nd Jyera Apocalypse.

Metro Station No. 27 was also known as Museum Station, because one of its many entrances and exits was near the famous Kaelor Art Museum.

The museum, located above Station 27, was a historical landmark that further enhanced the value of properties in the wealthy Imperial Garden area before the apocalypse, but it had been completely looted. Many of its works of art, especially the wooden frames of famous paintings, statues, artefacts, and historical furniture belonging to honourable figures of Jyera, had been destroyed and taken to Station No. 27 simply as fuel for campfires during the winter.

At this moment, all entrances to Station No. 27 were completely blocked, and along with these blockages, almost 12 meters of snow buried and protected a group of survivors of the terrible winter outside. But the fear of the cold and the monsters still lingered, and even with the entrances blocked, groups of guards took turns watching over them all.

At one of the entrances, a veteran of Jyera's army, who was also a level 2 mutant named Rodolf, tried to warm himself inside many coats and furs while observing the approaching rookie who would be his partner for the first time on today's shift.

"Hello, sir!"

"Hm, welcome, your name is Bernard, right?"

"Yes, sir!"

"We're just a group of civilians, and I'm not the leader of this group, so you don't need to call me sir. After all, we don't have that much of an age difference."

"Yes, sir—I mean, Rodolf!"

After nodding to the newcomer, Rodolf heard him ask two more questions:

"Mr Rodolf, is it usually this cold near the entrance? I was told that as long as I was well-dressed, I wouldn't feel too cold here… Oh yes, since this is my first time, is there anything a newcomer like me needs to know while guarding this entrance?"

Rodolf simply sighed at the newcomer, continuing to call him "Mr." After all, it was unusual to be a veteran as young as him, so he decided to ignore the term while rubbing his gloved hands together again, trying to warm them.

"No, it's not usually this cold…"

Taking out a cigarette to smoke and offering another to the newcomer, who politely refused, Rodolf continued:

"Unlike the blockade on the subway tracks, which requires extra attention, there's nothing special about this gate. It's just one of the gates leading outside the station. Our boss, who's a level 3 mutant, already tried to get out and said that anything out there would freeze in seconds or be quickly buried under tons of snow…"

Despite also being a level 2 mutant, the newcomer Bernard sighed in relief. He only had a hockey stick as a weapon, and he didn't want to have to fight zombies that usually attacked the blockades and barricades on the tracks. After all, even though it was very cold underground, it was still a place with tolerable temperatures compared to outside. It was also the reason why the subways were full of rats, bats, birds, and still-active zombies.

As their shift progressed, they continued chatting:

"The food portions have gotten much smaller recently; it feels like I'm always hungry..."

The veteran smiled at Bernard's complaint and said,

"Our doctor said that Level 2 and Level 3 mutants don't need to eat much to survive, as long as they don't overexert themselves and burn too many calories…"

"I know, but I'm still hungry… Maybe it's my mind being used to my old habits and body, besides—"

"TREMOR"

A slight tremor caused dust and small pieces of dried paint to fall from the ceiling. The two gate guards stopped talking and went on high alert.

"Bang"

"Tremble"

"Bang"

"Tremble"

The tremor continued to increase until loud banging sounds were also heard, and soon the two realised that something was breaking the station's entrance gate and also the many barriers and barricades they had erected.

Veteran Rodolf looked at the rookie and ordered:

"Go down the stairs to the next gate and get help quickly!"

The rookie trembled with terror in his veteran partner's voice and hesitated for a moment, not understanding what could be happening…

"QUICK!"

Only after the second shout did Bernard snap out of his trance and begin to run using all the speed his mutant body could provide. In seconds, he descended the long stairs and soon spotted a group of other survivors, but at that moment, a loud sound spread throughout Station 27.

"BANG!"

"CRACK"

"WHOOSH"

Following the sound, a cold wind flooded the stairway Bernard had just descended. Bernard's entire body stiffened with the cold that invaded the subway station stairs and began to spread to where most of the survivors were hiding.

"Step"

"Step"

Still stiff from the sudden cold, Bernard turned around and saw a terrifying creature that vaguely resembled a human… It had a strong physique, short, messy black hair, was shirtless, barefoot, and wore only ripped black dress pants. It had a pair of almost transparent light blue eyes, dark blue skin, and a pair of wings on its back that were folded so as not to hinder its walk. The monster descended the stairs slowly, holding Rodolf's decapitated head.

Bernard wanted to attack the monster, but he was physically frozen by the cold and mentally shaken when he noticed that the monster was also chewing pieces of Rodolf. Before he could do anything, Bernard saw his vision jump upwards and begin to spin; that's when he realised he had also been decapitated by the monster...

Soon, screams, gunshots, and explosions rang out from inside Station 27, but all this commotion barely lasted 5 minutes.

In the midst of the terrifying silence and thick smoke, the blue-skinned zombie, who had only recently reached level 3, slowly walked out the way he had entered Station 27. This time, he carried the body of the only level 3 human in this group of survivors. This human and his crystal were valuable nutrients for these zombies to continue on their path of evolution.

As soon as the zombie exited subway station No. 27, its shrunken wings widened; they were the same dark blue as its skin and resembled the wings of a bat.

As the zombie flew and gained altitude in the sky, it seemed that the blizzard and strong winds completely ignored it, never harming its body. His clear blue eyes scanned the entire neighbourhood of the station and began searching for the next target to satiate his seemingly eternal hunger…

Soon, a commercial building came into his view. Although the first three floors were buried in snow, the upper floors were intact, and there wasn't even ice accumulating on the walls, proving that the entire building must be under an intense heating system. Furthermore, all the windows on the dozens of floors were blocked and barricaded.

Smiling, the zombie knew he had found a new target to satiate his hunger...

The commercial building the zombie was observing was home to over two hundred survivors; it was also the survivor base built by Astronaut Anna and her friend Marco after they took over the building from a group of ex-convicts. It was also just a few blocks away from Lucien's apartment...
