The first weekend of the new semester arrived.
For the freshmen who were participating in military training, a weekend of rest was sadly out of their reach.
This took Luo Ziling by surprise.
"I didn't expect military training to continue over the weekend. I was actually hoping to invite you to visit the Summer Palace!" Luo Ziling sent this WeChat message to Yang Qingyin after feeling down for a while, not sure what he was thinking.
But after sending the message, he immediately regretted it, fearing he was too forward. What if she refused?
"Let's go after your military training is done," Yang Qingyin replied two minutes later.
After reading Yang Qingyin's reply, Luo Ziling was ecstatic.
She had accepted his invitation, she hadn't refused. Could there be anything more exciting than this?
"No problem," Luo Ziling replied right away.
After a moment's thought, he typed a few more sentences: "I've never visited the Summer Palace myself, would you mind being my guide then?"
"What's in it for me?" Yang Qingyin's message was followed by several covering mouth laughter emojis.
Luo Ziling thought he could see Yang Qingyin's radiant smile through these emojis and didn't hesitate to reply: "How about I give you a beauty prescription?"
"Do I, a senior, even need beauty treatments with my natural beauty?"
"You don't need it now, but you will after you become a mother. My recipe could make a woman look at least ten years younger."
After sending the message, Luo Ziling didn't get an immediate response from Yang Qingyin, so he waited anxiously with his phone in hand—the longer he waited, the more nervous he became.
Looking over the message he had sent, he couldn't find anything wrong with it and couldn't understand why Yang Qingyin wouldn't reply.
Several minutes later, he finally received a message from Yang Qingyin—an eye roll.
"Did I say something wrong?" Luo Ziling couldn't help but send another message.
Since coming to school, he had quickly mastered the skill of texting and sending WeChat messages.
He wasn't familiar with pinyin, but strokes were easy to learn.
"You're making fun of me!" Luo Ziling finally received a message from Yang Qingyin.
"Am I?" Luo Ziling was somewhat puzzled; after reviewing his previous messages, he realized that perhaps mentioning to Yang Qingyin about "after she becomes a mother" was somewhat inappropriate. He quickly sent a message back, "Okay, I admit I was wrong. But I do have that recipe. My grandfather once said, each of his recipes is very valuable."
"Then why don't you sell them for money instead of giving them to me?"
"Because you're my friend!"
After sending this message, Luo Ziling waited a while without a reply from Yang Qingyin.
Feeling a bit anxious, Luo Ziling carefully sent another message: "Did I say something wrong again?"
Yang Qingyin responded with a smiling face emoji, followed by another message: "Your grandfather dotes on you a lot!"
"I was raised by my grandfather; I've never seen my parents since I was a child." Luo Ziling didn't know why, but he naturally shared this with Yang Qingyin. As he sent the message, feelings of grievance and sadness surged in his heart. He was even more curious about what she and the Ouyang sisters had discussed that night, and of course, he wanted to see her even more.
"Really?" Yang Qingyin's message was accompanied by several shocked emojis.
Then another message came right away: "I'm sorry, I had no idea about your family background. Did they, have important matters to attend to?"
Actually, Yang Qingyin wanted to ask Luo Ziling if his parents were gone, but she felt it was too cruel to ask that.
She knew it was somewhat impolite and inappropriate to inquire about such a matter, yet she could sense that Luo Ziling must have felt very sad when he was telling her about it. She wanted to offer him some words of comfort, so she took the liberty of asking.
"I don't even know where they have gone, my mom actually knows I came to Yanjing, but she just doesn't want to come and see me." Luo Ziling sent this message but then thought it might not be appropriate and withdrew it.
But Yang Qingyin had already seen the message and couldn't help feeling sad as well. She didn't know how to console Luo Ziling, especially since they weren't very familiar with each other's circumstances.
"I'm sorry, I shouldn't have told you all this." Seeing that Yang Qingyin hadn't replied for a while, Luo Ziling felt he had said the wrong thing again.
"Thank you for telling me this!" Yang Qingyin's message came quickly.
"I should also thank you. Anyway, I'm off to have some late-night snacks," Luo Ziling didn't know what else to say to Yang Qingyin, and just then Cao Jianhui called him to go out for a night snack.
Yang Qingyin sent back two smiling emojis.
After this chat with Yang Qingyin, Luo Ziling's mood improved significantly, as the annoyance caused by the Ouyang sisters, Feifei and Huihui, dissipated completely.
While having the late-night snacks, he ended up having a drinking contest with several dormmates and straight-up floored the other three.
The next day was Saturday, and the freshmen's military training continued.
The instructor announced that it was the last day of drill training, and many students breathed a sigh of relief upon hearing this.
But then the instructor said something that made them feel like they were plunging into hell.
"In the coming days, the training will become even more difficult. I hope everyone is prepared."
Needless to say, this statement elicited a chorus of groans from the students in formation.
During a break in the morning training session, Luo Ziling was sitting and chatting boastfully with a few dormmates when the colonel in charge of overseeing the freshmen's training strode over to their location.
"Student Luo Ziling, please come with me. Someone is looking for you!" the commanding officer called out Luo Ziling in front of all his classmates.
Luo Ziling responded loudly and immediately and trotted after the colonel.
The colonel led him toward the instructors' rest area.
On the way, Luo Ziling couldn't help but be curious and asked the colonel who was looking for him.
The colonel told him it was a woman. Upon hearing it was a woman, Luo Ziling immediately became excited.
Could it be her?
Just the thought that it might be her coming to find him made Luo Ziling uncontrollably excited.
However, upon seeing the woman who was looking for him, he couldn't help but feel disappointed; she was not the woman he had imagined.
The woman who came to find him was very tall, dressed in a black leather jacket and pants, with sunglasses perched on her nose, leaning against a military Humvee. She looked as cool as could be, and anyone seeing her couldn't help but be astounded.
As Luo Ziling approached, the woman took off the sunglasses from her nose and casually tidied her hair, watching Luo Ziling expressionlessly.
"So it's you," it took Luo Ziling several glances to recognize the woman standing in front of him, who was exceptionally tall and strikingly beautiful.
After recognizing her, he was extremely surprised, but then was overwhelmed with incredible joy.
He gave her a genuine smile, then blurted out something earth-shattering without thinking: "Dressed in clothes, I almost didn't recognize you."
