The Frugal Mage

Chapter 184: The Secret

Rayven's new life inside the Fumiya estate began quietly, and it doesn't feel bad at all.

His guest room in the east wing was far more luxurious than anything he'd stayed in before. The bed was large, the mattress was firm, the sheets were smooth, and it even felt enchanted to stay cool in the summer heat.

They must have bought this from an Enchanter!

Rayven couldn't help but hope that Thyruz also learned such enchantments. Unfortunately, the old man was focused on weapon and gear enchantments, instead of those for comfort.

A small writing desk sat near the window, overlooking the inner courtyard where the Baron's personal guards trained in the mornings.

There was even a private bath chamber, complete with a mana-heated basin and a shelf stocked with imported soaps and oils.

He felt like a guest of honor, and he liked this treatment.

"Impressive… They're more meticulous than I thought." Rayve mused. He didn't ask for any of it, but they gave it anyway.

Every morning, just after sunrise, a maid would knock gently and deliver a light breakfast. It was usually warm bread, soft-boiled eggs, and a cup of herbal tea that helped with mana training… Though he didn't need it.

Rayven would eat in silence, then prepare for the day's treatment.

At exactly the same hour he had first cast Stabilize, he would return to Elvira's chamber.

The room was always quiet when he entered. The Baroness was often there, seated beside her daughter. Her expression was always calm, but she looked really tired.

He even wanted to offer to cast the Stabilize Spell on her, but he decided not to, unless he was asked.

For now, the physicians stood back, no longer interfering or asking questions to him. They had accepted their role as observers.

Rayven would approach the bed, place his hand just above Elvira's chest, and cast the spell.

[ Stabilize (Common): Temporarily reinforces the target's vital rhythm…

Cast Time: 2 seconds

Cost per use: 2 Gold

Type: Support / Healing ]

A soft glow would pulse from his palm, and Elvira's breathing would ease. Her pulse would strengthen, and the color in her lips would return slightly, but noticeably.

Each time, the effect was temporary, but it was real.

And for that, they paid him six gold coins per session and no questions asked.

Needless to say, Rayven already purchased the Inner Mend…

[ Inner Mend (Uncommon): Focuses healing on internal tissues, organs, and mana channels. Cannot heal external wounds.

Cast Time: 4 seconds.

Cost per use: 3 Gold

Type: Healing / Internal ]

It was worth 800 gold coins, and since this was an Uncommon Spell, he had to replace one of his ten Tier 1 Spells.

Of course, without hesitation, he had replaced his Mana Flick already for that… After all, it costs 1 Gold Coin to cast, similar to Fireball, which was way better than Mana Flick, which could barely scratch a mage.

Nonetheless, Rayven didn't want to heal Elvira yet.

In any case, she wasn't in a life threatening condition anymore. He wanted to spend more time in the Manor to gather more information about the nobles and perhaps befriend the people around him.

By the third day, the steward returned with a small box…

"A token of appreciation… Ahem… This is to ensure you remain available, since the Baron is worried that you might think of accepting another Adventurer's Mission and leave this place."

"Ohhh… I guess that's possible." Rayven mused as he accepted the gift.

He wouldn't reject something free, especially if it was a gift for a mage…

As expected, inside were three simple but valuable magic items. He didn't know much about them, but the steward explained it carefully.

The first was the Mana Thread Ring. It was a silver band that slightly reduced the mana cost of Tier 1 and Tier 2 spells.

There was a Traveler's Pouch, and it was enchanted to hold up to 50 kilograms of items without adding weight.

Then, there was also a Protection Seal Token. It was a one-time-use talisman that could block an attack from a Tier 3 Mage.

Well, Rayven already received Ardania's necklace that could protect him from an attack coming from a Tier 5 Mage, but he didn't mind having more protection…

Rayven paused after confirming everything… "These aren't cheap. Are you sure about this?"

He asked, though he didn't plan to return it anymore. In his estimation, these Magic Items should be worth over a thousand gold coins or so.

"They're expensive… They came from the Baron!" The steward raised his voice but he swiftly cleared his throat to calm his voice…

"Ahem… Of course, the Baron wouldn't give you any cheap item. But your time is also precious. We'd prefer you not take any adventuring missions while you're under our care. Consider this… a retainer."

Rayven didn't argue. He hadn't planned to leave anyway, not while Elvira's condition remained unstable. And with six gold coins per session, he was earning more in a week than most Silver Rank adventurers made in a month.

Besides, the manor was… comfortable.

He had access to the estate's private library, mostly noble histories and magical theory, but there were a few rare tomes on mana flow and internal channeling. Though they weren't too helpful for a System-User like him.

Still, he wanted to understand the mages as well, so he needed to read them…

Just like that, he spent his afternoons reading, cross-referencing what he could with his system's Basic Suggestion from time to time.

The staff also treated him with respect, so he liked it…

The maids bowed when he passed, and he guards nodded. Even the Baron, though still stern, no longer looked at him with suspicion.

Once, during dinner in the guest dining hall, the Baroness herself joined him.

On one quiet evening, the Baroness even visited Rayven in his room…

"Ahhh… wait…" Rayven was shocked as he didn't expect the Baroness to suddenly come here while everyone was asleep.
