Chapter 129: New House Move-in
「You really worked hard today.」
In the blink of an eye, dusk had fallen.
Gauss and Arya had been busy the entire day, and only now were all matters finally settled.
Meeting with the real estate agent, discussing terms, finalizing details, commissioning the food workshop for processing—
The jerky ordered from the merchant for processing needed a week to complete, even under urgent order. Under normal circumstances, it would have taken even longer.
Moreover, the resulting product would significantly shrink in weight, yielding only about two hundred catties of compressed jerky.
Of course, for Gauss, that would still last a long time.
After all, the thigh meat jerky from that Rust Frog was high-quality and calorie-dense food.
A hundred grams was already quite chewy.
Naturally, for future commissions, he would still need to carry other food. He could bring less dry rations, but not go without entirely.
First, it was to maintain nutritional balance and avoid consuming a single type of food for too long.
Second, although magical beast jerky had no side effects on him, Arya seemed unable to consume too much in a short time. Otherwise, her mouth would go so numb that she couldn’t speak.
Clearly a delicacy, but due to the weakness of her digestive system, she couldn’t eat it in large amounts. Gauss truly felt sorry for her.
After settling the jerky, they moved on to purchasing autumn and winter clothing, boots, inspecting the house, and signing the contract—
A whole “combo” of tasks that left Gauss collapsed on the chair, unwilling to move.
He felt these mundane chores were even more mentally exhausting than fighting monsters.
However, when his gaze swept across the standalone two-story house he had bought for 1 Gold and 15 Silver, the fatigue was dispelled by a strange warmth.
In the modest living room, the Oil Lamp emitted a soft, warm yellow glow. Outside the window, the orange-purple twilight light gently spilled in, calming one’s soul.
He stared for a while.
Gauss blinked and the corners of his mouth lifted.
But... it was worth it.
After half a year in this world, he finally had a place to rest and settle down.
「So... this will be my home from now on?」
Thinking of this, his heart was filled with mixed emotions.
In both his lives, this was the first time he had ever purchased property.
In his previous life, as a fresh graduate office worker, buying a house was an unattainable dream.
The former owner of this body had also made it his life goal.
But as for progress, it wasn’t a matter of leaping forward — more like it would never happen.
Or rather, from an outsider’s perspective, buying a house had nothing to do with this poor kid from the countryside. It was just an impractical fantasy of a youth who ran around aimlessly.
Now that it had finally become reality, Gauss’s mood was complex.
「We still need to add some furniture. There should be a counter here. The curtain on the window is a bit dirty. Should we wash it or replace it—」
Arya paced around the living room, enthusiastically offering suggestions.
Although the house came with some furniture, it wasn’t particularly well-furnished. Gauss would definitely need to spend more money to furnish it himself.
Thankfully, it was livable for now.
Tonight, Gauss planned to use 【Prestidigitation】 and 【Dancing Wind】 to give the house — especially the bedroom, bed, wardrobe, and Bathhouse — a thorough cleaning, ensuring all traces of the previous owner were removed.
「Then I won’t disturb you anymore.」 Arya turned around inside the house and bid farewell to Gauss.
「Not joining me for dinner?」
「I’ll pass. You just moved in, you probably still have a lot of personal items to sort out. Good luck.」 After giving Gauss some encouragement, Arya left his house and walked toward her own not far away.
Gauss rested a while longer.
Then he sat up from the chair, stretched, and pulled out his Bone Wand from the 【Small Storage Bag】.
「Next... comes the real battle!」
He took a deep breath.
「【Dancing Wind】!」
「【Prestidigitation】!」
「This wooden floorboard is a bit damaged... 【Mending】!」
In the following few hours—
Gauss continuously used Cantrips to clean the room. Occasionally, when small items or furniture were broken, he would cast 【Mending】 to try repairing them, though it didn’t always succeed.
Once his Magical Energy ran out, he used the energy from the 【Energy Storage Gland】 to replenish it while eating to restore energy.
Then he continued cleaning the house.
Repeating this cycle over and over.
By the time night was deep—
Gauss looked around at the newly refreshed house — the wooden floorboards gleamed, all items were as clean as new, and even previously damaged parts had been fully repaired. He let out a long breath.
One wouldn’t even guess this was a “used house”. Not even a new house could look this clean and bright.
Even hiring professionals to clean wouldn’t produce this effect. At best, human efforts could tidy up the space, but not restore broken or old items — unless a Spellcaster was brought in to clean without concern for Magical Energy expenditure.
This was the wondrous power of magic!
Although Gauss had spent a great deal of effort, he was still very satisfied with the result.
And he had even gained a small bonus — several Cantrips had gained a bit of Skill Proficiency due to extended, repeated usage.
「【Prestidigitation】 Skill Proficiency +5」
「【Dancing Wind】 Skill Proficiency +3」
「【Mending】 Skill Proficiency +3」
Both 【Dancing Wind】 and 【Mending】 had leveled up from 1v1 to 1v2 in Skill Proficiency.
Gauss entered the kitchen, lit a fire, and heated water on the stove. Then he moved the hot water to the large wooden tub in the Bathhouse and mixed it with cold water to adjust the temperature.
Then he stepped in.
Wrapped in a towel, leaning against the edge of the wooden tub, staring at the swirling steam, his vision gradually blurred.
Yet his heart was more peaceful and still than ever before.
He had a little home now.
Though it looked like it was bought with money, in truth it was a tiny benefit of the strength he had accumulated as a Professional.
From now on, he just had to keep striving, keep growing stronger, and aim to live a better life in this world.
「Gauss, come here. There’s something for you.」
Though he had a new house and planned to invite a few acquaintances for a celebration, Gauss and Arya still habitually used the Sophia Inn lobby as their meeting spot.
Today, just as he walked in, he was called over by Sophia.
「Something for me?」
Looking at the tightly wrapped Pack that Sophia handed him, Gauss was full of confusion.
There were deliveries in this world too? But he hadn’t made any recent purchases...
He didn’t know many people. If someone had something for him, they would just hand it to him directly. There was no need to leave it at the inn’s front desk and ask Sophia to pass it on.
「Who brought it over?」 Gauss asked curiously as he received the Pack.
「It was a skinny girl, wrapped in a black cloak. She moved like a cat, without a sound. She gave me quite a scare when she appeared.」
Listening to Sophia’s vivid description, Gauss began to form a vague guess.
Opening the Pack, he found a finely crafted set of Adventurer traps and disarming tools, along with a letter.
