Chapter 137: Half-Ogre
Gauss patiently waited for the two to finish communicating before he spoke.
"Any intel?"
"Any dum intel! Any dum intel! Any...::::" Ike turned his head toward Gauss, noisily repeating.
The corner of Gauss’s mouth twitched imperceptibly, and he suppressed the urge to facepalm.
This kind of situation... wasn’t the first time.
He consoled himself—if he wanted Ike to fully grasp basic human speech and later communicate simply, this kind of silly mimicry was a necessary step.
"Mm, Ike found the camp under the jurisdiction of that Half-Ogre. Its location is just...:::" Arya relayed the intel obtained from the Contracted Raven.
The Half-Ogre, their primary target for this mission, was, as the name suggested, a typical hybrid species.
Born from the interbreeding of Ogres and humans, Beastmen, or other humanoid creatures.
According to the official Monster Encyclopedia, their Challenge Rating was typically Tier 1.
These monsters stood nearly two and a half meters tall, weighing up to two or three hundred kilograms. They looked hideous, with rough skin, inheriting certain features and abilities of Ogres, though their size was somewhat inferior to that of pure-blooded Ogres.
Their intelligence wasn't particularly high, but in this monster army led by that terrifying Ogre Shaman,
even other low-tier monsters of different species were willing to obey the Half-Ogre's command.
"Also, Ike discovered signs of another tribe—"
"That’s... good news." A glint of light flashed in Gauss's eyes, and a hint of joy passed across his face.
It appeared the area they were responsible for had no shortage of monsters.
"Funny hee! Funny hee!" Ike flapped his wings smugly.
Gauss ignored him and turned to Arya.
"Arya, seems we’ll need to strike fast."
"Alright." Arya nodded.
Ordinarily, the prudent approach would have been to scout the terrain carefully and then, like with the Rust Frog, sneak in to weaken the enemy through covert assaults, followed by gradual kiting attrition.
But Gauss was very much a team player. He still planned to clean up his area quickly, then go “support” nearby adventurers and help alleviate their pressure.
Naturally, he couldn't proceed step by step.
Different situations called for different tactics.
Of course, essential reconnaissance before battle was still foundational.
Guided by Ike, the two humans and one wolf silently advanced. Before long, the small team arrived at the outskirts of a monster encampment near a water source.
A disorderly mob of monsters from various races was lazily resting, waiting for the Ogre Shaman to sound the horn of a full assault, completely unaware that hunters had arrived.
At the center of the camp, the Half-Ogre leader mentioned in the intel was dozing loudly, leaning against a haystack.
Its appearance matched the books precisely: green, leather-rough skin, thickly knotted muscles, dense hair, a flat wide nose, and tusks protruding menacingly; its limbs were proportioned like a human’s, but the bone structure was much bulkier.
In short, it was identified as a brawny, ugly giant.
Gauss’s eyes swept over the camp, quickly scouting.
After confirming the distribution of grunts and the position of the leader, he no longer hesitated.
The Bone Wand silently appeared in his hand. His mind calmed, and his magical energy surged.
"Magic Missile!"
The tip of the Bone Wand abruptly pointed forward.
Three clusters of brilliant deep blue arcane energy instantly condensed, tearing through the air with a piercing screech, flying past the surrounding grunts, and homing in precisely on the massive, slumbering figure near the haystack.
"Boom! Boom! Boom!"
Caught completely off guard, the Half-Ogre was struck squarely by three missiles upon the heavy beast-hide armor covering its body!
This armor, which could trouble even ordinary Tier 1 Professionals, seemed fragile before Gauss’s fully-powered Magic Missiles.
With full mana output, 9 points in Intelligence, Sub-core Skill Slot enhancement, Tier 1v4 proficiency, and innate Spell Mastery...
These multiple factors combined made this seemingly basic Tier 1 Spell explode with power far beyond its rank in Gauss’s hands!
The first strike shattered the beast-hide armor, sending fragments flying!
The second tore into the tough skin underneath, covered in dark tumors and keratinous protrusions!
The third explosion compounded the previous impacts—raging magical energy violently tore open the creature’s chest, splitting skin and flesh, revealing torn muscles and exposed sinew.
"Splurt—"
Dark purple, stinking blood sprayed like a fountain, sizzling as it hit the ground, leaving a gaping, bleeding wound.
To remain undetected, Gauss had fired from a relatively long distance. He could only aim approximately. Fortunately, his Tier 1v4 proficiency was reliable— all three missiles successfully struck their target.
"Roaarrr!!!" The Half-Ogre howled in pain, its twisted features contorting even further from agony.
"Who! Ambushed Goruk!!"
It had to be said—the Half-Ogre truly lived up to its Challenge Rating as a monster.
Ordinary low-tier creatures would’ve been blown to pieces by such a volley of Magic Missiles. Yet, despite the pain, it still managed to stand up and roar in fury!
The robustness of its vitality and defense indeed distinguished elite monsters from regular ones.
That thought flashed across Gauss’s mind, but his feet never stopped moving.
In fact, at the moment he released the missiles, he had already burst from the bushes like an arrow loosed from a bowstring.
Enhanced Jump and his superior Strength and Constitution stats granted him charge speed far beyond what one would expect from a caster. Additionally, the gray wolf Ulfen was beside him, shielding him and driving off nearby enemies with vicious snaps.
Thus, his path remained unobstructed.
Distance closed rapidly! Gauss raised his wand once more!
At a more optimal range, he leveled the Bone Wand squarely at the just-upright and enraged Half-Ogre that had now spotted him.
"Little monkey! Goruk will kill you! Roast you and eat you!"
Such a chatterbox.
Naturally, Gauss had no intention of giving his enemy any breathing room—strike while the enemy was weakened.
This was the core reason he had immediately targeted the leader for a fierce assault.
"Magic Missile!"
Another trio of Magic Missiles quickly locked onto the Half-Ogre.
This time, with much closer range, he could aim precisely at the gaping wound still oozing purple blood.
Goruk had just reached for the giant axe on the ground, preparing to cleave the daring spellcaster in two.
But faster than its movement were the deadly Magic Missiles!
"Boom!"
"Boom!"
"Boom!"
All three missiles drilled viciously into the unguarded wound.
Without the protection of armor or skin, its body was now far more vulnerable to the overlapping magical energy.
The destructive power of Magic Missile was on full display.
"Vrrrmm!"
The explosive magical surge rampaged through the Half-Ogre’s massive frame like a meat grinder.
Chunks of flesh and shattered keratin were violently ejected from the chest cavity.
The creature’s heavy body froze abruptly, its massive axe crashing to the ground.
It felt a chill, bone-deep and spreading rapidly through its body, while the rage in its mind ebbed like a receding tide. Darkness overtook its vision.
In disbelief, it looked down—only to see a massive hole punched straight through its chest.
Its ribcage had been entirely hollowed out by the three Magic Missiles!
Its heart had been obliterated—completely annihilated by the blast.
"Nguh——." The angry roar lodged in its throat, transforming into a whimper of despair.
Endless darkness devoured its consciousness in an instant.
A savage Half-Ogre perished, full of regret.
"Half-Ogre (Elite Monster) killed ×1"
"Second Elite Monster activated, unlocking the Path of Elites."
