Chapter 139: Monster Encyclopedia Accumulation
Gauss was the first to pick off most of the Mosquito Bats.
Then he glanced at the Contracted Raven Ike; it was not idle, having already started flapping its wings to chase down those Mosquito Bats fleeing into the sky.
Its flight speed was faster than the Mosquito Bats, and its sharp beak and claws were also far superior to theirs.
In terms of mobility and attack power, those last two or three that slipped through the net were truly no match for it.
Guessing that those Mosquito Bats would most likely die in Ike’s claws, Gauss had no intention of wasting more time.
The rest of the remaining low-level monsters had already started to show signs of rout.
Even though the enemies were numerous, it would be difficult for just the two of them to keep all those intent on fleeing, but Gauss still intended to give it his all.
After all, this concerned the accumulation of his total monster kill count.
Even without considering that, each monster was real, tangible money.
With the existence of monster bounties, killing one was like putting a silver coin directly into his pocket.
Although the amount was not much, killing these small monsters now posed little difficulty for him.
Gauss ignored the twenty or thirty monsters that still had fight left in them, who were picking up weapons and preparing to charge him.
Seeing their aggressiveness, he naturally chose to spare them for now, going after those monsters that had been scared out of their wits first; it would not be too late to turn his weapon on them afterward.
And those scared witless monsters were precisely the Fear Demons.
Their fat bodies were already starting to wriggle backward, shielding their other monster comrades in front of them.
Gauss would not let them escape.
"Magic Missile!"
A bright blue missile locked on to the nearest Fear Demon.
The missile tore through the air and struck its bloated head with precision.
"Boom!"
Like a watermelon bursting, the Fear Demon’s head exploded instantly.
"Defeated Fear Demon ×1"
"Current ordinary monster encyclopedia entries: 15"
The Fear Demon lit up the fifteenth image on the ordinary page of the Monster Encyclopedia.
"Obtained title [Fear Demon Hunter]. Title effect: Penetration. When fighting Fear Demons and their advanced species, attacks carry special penetrating power, making it easier to break through their fat-layer defense."
Strangely, after Gauss killed the Fear Demon, its headless corpse fell to the ground and quickly turned into a pool of pus and greasy residue, vanishing completely.
Returned to the Abyss upon death? Gauss blinked.
After all, it was not a creature of the Material Plane; being a little strange was only natural.
Pushing aside his thoughts, he turned and poured fire onto the other fleeing Fear Demons and Kobolds.
"Boom!"
In his hands, the downgraded Magic Missile and Fire Bolt were used alternately, efficiently harvesting lives.
Against some stubborn Goblins that hacked at his armor but could not pierce its defense, Gauss would occasionally take out the rapier from his storage bag with a flip of his hand and send them neatly on their way.
He noticed an interesting phenomenon.
Some Goblins, after he exposed himself as a spellcaster by using magic, would become much more eager to attack him.
It was not the first or second time this happened.
Was there some reason behind it?
In the distance, after Arya used Entangling Spell to bind some of the low-level monsters fleeing toward the edge, she also swung her oak staff to finish them off.
Though her frontal combat ability was not strong, with the physical fitness of a Professional, swinging an oak staff was enough to kill low-level monsters like Kobolds and Goblins.
Beside Gauss, the Wolf Companion Ulfen turned into a gray blur; with the aid of the Gauss Force Field, it darted across the battlefield, biting off the heads of low-level monsters with ease.
There were too many monsters to kill them all in a short time, so there was no such thing as “kill-stealing” here; without restraint, Ulfen showed the powerful strength of a Druid’s companion.
Having completed the collection of two new low-level monster encyclopedia entries, Gauss fully devoted himself to the “money-making business.”
"Silver Coin +1!"
"Silver Coin +1!"
It seemed as if text was constantly flashing before Gauss’s eyes.
When all was settled.
Two people and one wolf stood in place, breathing lightly.
"Seems… we didn’t kill them all." Arya glanced around the messy battlefield with slight regret.
"Probably let 20 to 30 escape." Gauss made his judgment.
Total monsters killed: 672.
He estimated that in that last wave he killed about fifty monsters.
Ulfen and Arya likely killed thirty together, with the rest scattering into the forest from all directions.
According to Guild standards, this level of clearance was considered mission completion.
When the number of low-level monsters was large, completely wiping them out with none escaping was very difficult.
A hundred or so low-level monsters fleeing with all their might were hard to completely eliminate with just a small team.
With the monsters dispersed, pursuing them into the forest afterward was unrealistic.
"Let’s rest for a bit. Once we recover our strength, we’ll look for our next target."
Gauss lit a green signal flare to signify mission completion.
Afterward, the Guild’s collection team would come to handle the spoils.
"Alright." Arya replied between gasps.
Her stamina was not as good as Gauss’s; after that bit of exertion, she still needed time to recover.
Gauss skillfully took out a red Magical Berry and chewed it along with a piece of fragrant, rich Dried Magical Frog Meat.
He had been making similar supply actions during the battle earlier, so his movements were already very practiced.
After two chews, warm energy quickly began to flow through his body.
Especially the energy from the Magical Berry produced by the Divine Berry Technique—within moments it turned into absorbable nutrients, like a drop of sweet rain nourishing his whole body, quickly restoring part of his condition.
The dried magical frog meat had a stronger after-effect, providing a steady stream of energy to fill his Energy Storage Gland.
"You want some?"
Gauss took out another piece of dried meat and looked at Arya.
Arya blinked, remembering the terrible experience in town when she tried to evaluate Gauss’s highly-praised compressed frog jerky—only to be numbed so badly she could not speak for a long while.
Her pupils contracted sharply, and she showed a pained expression, shaking her head.
"Forget… forget it. I’ll pass. You eat it yourself." Her tone was resolute.
Gauss felt a little pity for her and popped the fragrant dried frog meat into his mouth to chew.
One Magical Berry paired with two strips of dried frog meat would be enough to fill his stomach.
While digesting the frog meat and recovering stamina and mana.
He began calculating in his head the approximate gains from that last clearance.
"Elite monster Half-Ogre—2.5 gold coins each.
Low-level monsters—some are cheaper; on average, bounties are 1 silver coin and 10 copper coins each. Assuming the total kills were 75, that’s about 83 silver coins."
"As for spoils, based on past experience: the ogre’s great axe and armor, materials from the ogre itself, other supplies from the camp, weapons from the small fry… altogether should sell for 3–5 gold coins."
Adding it up, that was 7 or more gold coins!
Although the Adventurer’s Guild would take a share, it was only a symbolic deduction for manpower costs.
This was one of the main reasons adventurers were willing to risk danger and brave harsh weather to hunt monsters.
Compared to usual, this money-making speed was indeed much faster!
Gauss could almost see mounts, spells, and equipment “waving” at him.
