Chapter 177: New Version of Song of the Ocean
The original Song of the Ocean was set after the first war between the Rose Kingdom and the Sea Tribe.
And it was in this fire-and-water background that the Sea Tribe’s most gifted third princess, “Olivia”, fell in love with “Watson”, a noble of the Rose Kingdom.
The storyline of the play was composed of three parts:
The first part: their meeting. Due to magical backlash, “Olivia” was captured by fishermen and was rescued by “Watson”, a prince of the Rose Kingdom who happened to pass through the fishing village. The two fell in love at first sight;
The second part: mutual understanding. During their time together, “Olivia” came to understand Watson’s ideals and ambitions to protect the Rose Kingdom, and also the people’s longing for peace;
The third part: during the second war between the Sea Tribe and the Rose Kingdom, “Olivia” sacrificed herself to save “Watson”, and with her immense magical talent, put an end to the conflict between the two races.
The story ended with the war subdued, and “Olivia” and “Watson” held a grand wedding in the Rose Kingdom. The main plot of the original storyline always revolved around the love story between “Olivia” and “Watson”.
As for the antagonists in the play, there were two: the Sea Tribe’s first princess “Orlina”, who sought to recapture “Olivia”, and “Lilia”, the Rose Kingdom princess who opposed the romance between “Olivia” and “Watson”.
Vivian, who had seen the original Song of the Ocean, had indeed once been moved by the love between “Olivia” and “Watson”.
However, as the protagonist, Vivian felt “Olivia” was too flat a character.
Whether it was her bravery in pursuing love, or the kindness she displayed when she pitied the common folk of the Rose Kingdom—these traits, in Vivian’s eyes, were difficult to relate to.
Vivian even felt that “Olivia” was too cold and indifferent toward her own kin, especially her two elder sisters “Orlina” and “Orlissa”, who had always thought for her sake.
On one side was a lover of only a few months; on the other, were relatives who had raised her for decades. If it were Vivian, she would never abandon the Sea Tribe’s long lifespan for a fleeting romance and unite with a mortal.
That was too un-“wizard”-like.
But...
Watching the completely revamped plot on stage, which deviated entirely from Vivian’s memory, a surge of indescribable excitement suddenly welled up from her heart.
There was no growing close, no falling in love, not even a grand wedding.
From the very first scene where “Olivia” and “Watson” encountered each other, the entire plot trajectory changed—
“So this is the plot David secretly rewrote over the past half year?”
In the audience, Anna Moonshadow, seated with Klan Roland in the VIP section, was staring intently at the stage performance.
Originally a love-at-first-sight encounter between “Olivia” and “Watson” had now been rewritten: because “Olivia” had saved “Watson” from the ocean when he was a child, he had never forgotten her.
To repay this kindness, “Watson” chose to rescue “Olivia” from the fishermen.
It was this encounter that led “Olivia” to meet “Lilia”—played by Liji Silks—a plain-looking but broad-minded princess of the Rose Kingdom.
In the new version, “Lilia” was no longer the jealous, scheming princess bent on tearing “Olivia” and “Watson” apart. Instead, she became the first human friend to truly understand “Olivia’s” aspirations.
That’s right.
In the revised plot, it was no longer just the male lead “Watson” who held dreams and ideals. Both “Olivia” and “Lilia” were also given entirely new personalities.
On stage, “Olivia”, whose magic had partially recovered allowing her to transform her legs into a human form, was now wearing a sky-blue gown and stood quietly on a nighttime balcony.
“La la—”
“The waves are deep, the night is heavy… have the fallen stars returned to the embrace of the night? Dreams are gentle, voices chant—wandering kin of the deep sea, can you hear Olivia’s call—?”
Her voice was heavenly, her song mournful.
Amid the enchanting melody was interwoven “Olivia’s” longing and hesitation.
As the soliloquy to the moon ended, “Lilia”, who had waited outside for a long time, finally pushed open the door and walked to “Olivia’s” side.
“Olivia, can you tell me one reason why you rejected Watson’s proposal?”
Facing Lilia’s question, Olivia continued to calmly gaze at the bright moon above.
After a moment,
She softly replied:
“Because I am the daughter of the sea. Only the sea is the place I truly love.”
“What about Watson? He truly loves you. Can’t you give him a chance?”
“I cannot, Lilia. Because I do not love him.”
“The changes are really good—David is truly a genius!”
At this moment, Klan Roland, who was also watching the stage without blinking, felt even his breath quicken upon hearing “Olivia’s” line.
Everyone loved “Olivia”.
Everyone wanted to have “Olivia”.
But in the new version, “Olivia” was no longer the naive, pure-as-paper mermaid girl.
She was now a Sea Tribe princess of stunning beauty, capable of captivating the world—
“Olivia”.
The one she always loved was the sea.
The one she always loved would forever be the kin who were born and raised with her in the Sea Tribe.
Though her bond with “Watson” and “Lilia” deepened as they spent time together, the “Olivia” who longed only to return to the sea was merely waiting for a chance—
A chance for her magic to fully recover, to return to the sea—
“Next should be the climactic scene David kept talking about———”
The entire story of the new Song of the Ocean carried a cold-toned atmosphere as its main theme.
Even though the early part of the play had warm and joyful scenes, the ambition of the Rose royal family to dominate the ocean and “Orlina’s” desire to annihilate the human race had meant that the conflict between the two races had never ceased.
Thus, watching the Sea Tribe fall in battle one after another, “Olivia’s” emotions remained melancholic and sorrowful.
“Rumble———”
Amid pounding drums and deafening thunder sound effects, following an extended narrative buildup,
The second war between the two races began amidst a raging storm.
