Well, I guess it is not fair to blame you for this, I guess. I WAS pushing it to the edge after all. Allen said to himself internally.
It was true. Allen had been using the drone continuously ever since he left the outpost along with Luna and it had been quite a lot of time since then.
While fairly advanced, it was still a mini drone in the end and that meant it physically couldn't carry a larger battery having it have a really short window of time.
However, while a little annoyed at not being able to have a better look at the abandoned camp Allen still wasn't that dissatisfied.
After all, he had gotten what he originally wanted right when he saw the abandoned camp. Because since there were only two zones left, and one of them only had a camp which was abandoned then it automatically meant that the remaining camp was the one with the commander's tent in it.
And that very camp was the one right in front of them with only at the distance of a few hundred meters. Sure that meant he might have done all this for nothing when the real camp was right before them since the beginning.
But that was not really in the case. In cases of war you cannot be certain of things even if you know it has to be true, unless you have solid evidence for it.
Because if you are wrong then a lot of people would get killed, and it would be due to your fault.
That is why every single thing has to be verified before anything is set into motion. In fact, Allen would've done this even before they set foot out of Lishia's camp if only he had the drones capable of working at the ranges.
And then again, it wasn't as if the situation was the same as before. While trying to find the difference between the two zones Allen had zoomed in on the camps before them as well and now knew its layout and the shortest ways to escape in case they were caught.
All in all it was a positive situation, and a successful reconnaissance mission.
He knew the commander's tent was right before them in one of those camps, and now he just had to go there along with Luna and find it out.
He turned around, with his gaze falling onto Luna as he was just about to tell her about his findings.
However, just as he barely was able to open his mouth—
"Hey! Who's there!"
The shout ripped through the silence of the night around them. It came from their right and from the darkness around them.
Allen's eyes quickly rustled around and he saw four dark shapes were running at them. A patrol. They were almost on top of them and were not more than ten meters away.
Luna reacted instantly before Allen could even move a muscle.
She didn't shout and didn't hesitate. In a blur of motion the guard in the lead raised his spear with his mouth open to yell again.
But before he could Luna was already inside him. A flash of silver from her sword cut through the dark and the guard's shout turned into a wet gurgle.
He fell with his throat cut open and blood dripped out from it.
Allen's mind flipped into combat mode a few seconds after Luna.
Pistol. Now! He commanded, and a heavy cold metal materialized in his right hand.
It was the M9 pistol.
The second guard saw his partner fall and raised his own sword to charge at Allen.
Bang!
The sharp sound of the pistol cut through the air and a small hole appeared in the guard's forehead. He collapsed like a puppet with its strings cut.
The third guard was right behind him and he barely had time to register what happened.
Bang!
Allen fired again without a second's delay and the second shot was just as fast and accurate as the first one. The third guard's head snapped back and he dropped without even making a sound, with his sword falling onto the dirt beside him.
The fourth and final guard also stopped dead in his feet with his eyes were wide with shock. He had just seen all three of his friends die in less than three seconds, and this was something completely bewildering to him.
He opened his mouth to scream for help but he was too late and Luna was already on him. Her sword, still dripping with the blood, plunged deep into his chest as she ripped it out sideways and the man fell.
Even though they had been taken by surprise the whole fight was over in less than five seconds.
The sound of the shots made by Allen echoed across the dark plains. It sounded terribly loud in the quiet night but only for a few seconds before they were consumed by the unforgiving silence of their surroundings.
Allen and Luna froze and crouched low to the ground hoping that no one had listened to that. But their fears were unfounded.
Nothing happened.
The wind whistled and the distant and muffled sounds of the camp were unchanged. No one was coming. They were too far away and the wind had masked the sound.
They both let out a shaky breath at the same time. For now they were safe, for now.
"That's strange, we should have seen them," Allen whispered with his voice low. In all honesty he was a bit pissed at himself.
The drone was supposed to also watch for their surroundings, but it had went off just seconds before it was needed. He had been too focused on finding the tents that he had completely forgot about his surroundings.
It was a mistake that could have cost them gravely. He realized that, and made a mental note to not let something like that happen again.
"They weren't using any lights," Luna said. She was breathing heavily with the adrenaline slowly fading. "They must have been on a dark patrol. They almost had us."
She looked down at the dead guard at her feet. Her face was tight with frustration.
"I still should have sensed them. They got within five meters of us. Five meters!" She was angry at herself.
"If only I was better… if I could control my power like I'm supposed to, I would have detected their presence long before they saw us."
She clenched her fist, looking down at her feet as she leaned her back against the rock they were hiding behind.
This had been happening all too often now. Eunice was also injured because she wasn't fast enough to get to the highlander.
Even all the destruction caused by the highlander only happened because she was not able to dispose of him in time.
This was a failure. She was supposed to prevent all this, yet she was failing every single time. She could do nothing right and messed everything up no matter how much she tried.
She, was a failure.
