Thinking of this, Ling Zhenfei walked back into Min Xiang's room, but by this time, Min Xiang was already nearly asleep.
Ling Zhenfei said, "Don't sleep yet, I have a question for you."
"What question? I'm so sleepy," Min Xiang said.
Ling Zhenfei asked, "How did you come by this ambergris?"
Min Xiang replied, "It was a birthday gift I received a year ago."
Ling Zhenfei continued, "Did you receive it during your birthday at the Min's house? Do you know who sent it?"
Min Xiang said, "I don't know, there was no name on it, so I don't know who sent it."
"You must really like the scent, right?" Ling Zhenfei asked.
"Yes, I love it. I almost take it with me everywhere, and sleeping with the smell of ambergris is really comforting."
After hearing this, Ling Zhenfei was almost certain that Min Xiang's illness was caused by this ambergris, someone from the Min family gave it to her but added something inside.
It's this thing that poisoned Min Xiang. Smelling it every night acted like a chronic poison, gradually deteriorating her body over time.
Ling Zhenfei said, "Alright, it's nothing, you should rest now."
Ling Zhenfei returned to his own room and took the ambergris, putting it into the Heaven-Dropping Essence Marrow. He planned to dispose of it outside to avoid causing harm to anyone else.
At night, while Ling Zhenfei was resting and cultivating, he kept thinking about how to cure Min Xiang's illness. But his Divine Sense was always active, and suddenly he felt alerted because someone was approaching.
This person was coming in through the window, not using the main door, which meant they couldn't be up to any good. Who would enter through a window in the dead of night with good intentions?
Ling Zhenfei immediately came out of his cultivation state, lay on bed pretending to be asleep, wanting to see what this person intended to do.
First, this person peered into the window where Ling Zhenfei was sleeping, trying the window, but it was locked, so they moved to the next room where the window was unlocked, finding a chance to slip inside.
Dressed entirely in black, with special shoes that made no sound on the floor, it was obvious they were very professional.
The person wore a black mask, covering only their eyes, creating a scary appearance but was great for disguising oneself.
Ling Zhenfei was very curious what this person wanted to do, so he remained motionless on the bed as the person quietly pushed open the door and entered.
The person searched around as if looking for something, but despite searching everywhere, found nothing. Ling Zhenfei even wondered if this person was a thief, but so many things on the shelves were untouched.
Ling Zhenfei suddenly realized, this person was after the ambergris, clearly intending to destroy evidence, but since Ling Zhenfei had already taken it, the person found nothing.
Amused, Ling Zhenfei wondered what this person would do next, as finally, they approached Ling Zhenfei's bedside.
Pulling out a new mask from his back, it was a Sadako mask, incredibly terrifying, and enough to scare someone in broad daylight, let alone at night.
Curious, Ling Zhenfei pondered, could this person intend to scare him? No, the target was Min Xiang, since this was Min Xiang's bed.
Ling Zhenfei immediately understood. Min Xiang's health was so fragile that a scare could indeed be fatal that very night.
The plan was clearly well thought out. The person intended to open the window to escape immediately after scaring Min Xiang, wanting to leave without a trace. But how could they know Ling Zhenfei had already switched places with Min Xiang?
To Ling Zhenfei, this was all very amusing, watching like a silent performance.
Ling Zhenfei thought about how to play with this person, wondering who would scare whom in the end.
Now that everything was ready, the person stood in front of Ling Zhenfei's window, while Ling Zhenfei covered his head with a blanket, making it impossible for the person to notice the change in occupants.
Carefully, the person tapped Ling Zhenfei, sensed he was awake, then abruptly pulled the blanket off of Ling Zhenfei's head.
Drawing near to Ling Zhenfei's face, the person instantly regretted it, as the blanket didn't reveal Min Xiang but a blue-faced, fanged ghost staring back.
The person screamed and ran towards the window, trying to jump out, but bounced back as if hitting a wall despite the window being open.
Disoriented, the person saw the ghost on the bed trying to sit up, intending to catch him, and without further thought, rushed towards the window again.
This time calculating properly, the person launched himself, knowing the wide-open window wouldn't impede him, yet eerily he again felt he hit a wall and was thrown back, crashing to the floor.
The person experienced painful injuries, but it was the fear that overrode the pain, never expecting such an incident, turning his perception upside down.
Suddenly seeing the ghost get up and walk towards him scared him beyond measure.
"Help! There's a ghost, a real ghost!"
Seeing the ghost coming closer, the person was terrified and wailed in despair.
As the saying goes, if you do no wrong, you fear no ghosts. Clearly, this person had done too much wrong, thus his ghostly ploy backfired, scaring himself instead.
The world is full of wonders, Ling Zhenfei expected this person to visit at night, not expecting such a comical situation.
As Ling Zhenfei got closer, the person panicked further, looking at the distant window, contemplating a last-ditch escape, and giving it his all.
With no walls left by the window, the person shot through the open window, dramatically resembling a suicide leap.
"Ouch!"
A scream echoed from below, indicating a painful fall.
Startled, Ling Zhenfei thought the person might have fallen to death. Jumping from the second floor without precautions and at that speed could really be fatal.
Soon, however, sounds from below reassured him, "There's a ghost, a ghost." The voice faded away as it ran into the distance, probably not dead but likely injured, perhaps even with a broken leg.
Moments before, when Ling Zhenfei knew the person would uncover him, he had retrieved a mask from the Heaven-Dropping Essence Marrow in preparation.
Back at the Imperial Palace Club, they acquired many masks in the underground tunnels, and this mask was arguably the scariest one.
