"Is it over?"
Louis looked blankly at Fox beside him.
Fox's voice was somewhat somber:
"In this war, Princess Consort Diana suffered irreparable wounds and passed away half a year later."
"Grom was severely injured and has been recuperating in the incubator of the White Tower, with the Master of the White Tower rotated to Gandalf's side."
"Not to mention the White Crow Legion and the Royal Guard, even the Iron Guard, who could borrow the Emperor's power, suffered more than half losses. This is the second major blow since the capital was moved."
"Moreover, this wasn't even the main battlefield on our side."
"The real main battlefield was where the Black Sun clashed with the Emperor. There, the Forbidden Guard, the Captain of the Royal Guard, and leaders of various legions are still battling to the death with the demons."
"The Master of the Dark Crows returned urgently to join the battle. The strongest in the Royal Guard was killed, and over a quarter of the legion's elite were damaged."
"Facing the Black Sun, the Abyss, and the Underground City Demon King Army at the same time, the burden was indeed too great."
Louis barely opened his mouth:
Though there were still many questions.
Like how many times did the Black Sun lose control exactly?
Or why Princess Consort Diana could save Grom but in the end couldn't save herself.
Or how the Demon King could so easily enter the Fallen Shadow Nether Realm; was it always possible for him, or was it because of that teleportation gate?
"Too many have died," Louis said in a deep voice.
Fox sighed and said, "Yeah, that's why, I'm afraid."
He looked at Louis with a faint gaze:
"Funny, isn't it? Fearful of death in youth, indifferent to it in middle age, and now afraid again."
Louis shook his head and said:
"There's nothing funny about it. Fearing death is human nature."
Fox nodded: "If I weren't afraid of death, I should have held tightly onto my sister's hand back then."
When Fox said this, Louis realized that he had always been brooding over his sister's death.
Fox said he didn't care, but chose to delve into magic as soon as possible, selecting space magic first.
His level of research in space magic went far beyond what I imagined.
In the magic array to interfere with the Black Sun, aside from him, it comprised only the Empire's demigods and legends.
He was the only exemplar-level mage, not because he had connections.
It's simply that he's indeed skilled in this aspect.
Just as he thought this, the scenes in the memory space changed again.
Because this battle couldn't be revealed to the outside world, most soldiers, except for a few, were subjected to memory confusion magic.
This magic is quite different from memory-erasure magic.
Memory-erasure magic has a huge flaw: once they check with others, they quickly find that a period is missing from their minds.
But memory-confusion magic is much better.
The confused memories are much more hidden.
Fox stood in front of the closing space gate, eyes full of sorrow.
He saw the Emperor.
The one who, as humanity's strongest, suppressed the demigods of various nations for centuries.
The Black Sun was under the Emperor's control, its descending death-fire started to purge the remnants of the Fallen Shadow creatures and abyss demons.
Perhaps due to the severe casualties, the Emperor's face carried a painful expression.
Louis watched the Emperor stand up.
His condition was not good either, his entire body had a dark hue, seemingly injured by the Black Sun.
Fox, trembling, followed the Emperor, watching as the surging demons were forced back through the gate.
The Emperor said:
"Once the gate is closed, it'll be fine."
Fox, with a grief-stricken face, said:
"Is this really worth it, Your Majesty?"
The Emperor said, "What do you mean?"
Fox, perhaps a bit flustered, gesticulated as he spoke:
"We were strong, strong enough, but just to suppress the Gate of the Abyss, we took on so much risk, even..."
The Emperor shook his head and said:
"Even at the cost of so many compatriots' lives, right?"
Fox's face showed a look of guilt.
Louis immediately understood Fox's thoughts.
Actually, he had considered these questions initially, too.
Like if he simply fled from Beatrice, would survival have been easier?
Or if the Emperor didn't block the Abyss Gate, and let whoever wishes to handle the demons do so, would the Ense Empire become even stronger?
After all, this wasn't something he hadn't seen before.
Like how America made the world pay for their financial problems every time there was a crisis.
As long as you're shameless enough, in the short term, you can indeed reap ample benefits.
He even harbored an evil thought in his heart.
Since the Emperor was strong, why not use a decapitation tactic, shifting the battlefield, driving others onto Ense lands?
If they wish to survive, they naturally could only first battle the demons.
But these thoughts arose only for a moment.
He could understand why Fox would have such thoughts.
If you could let others bear the injuries meant for you, could you avoid getting hurt?
Although selfish, from a personal perspective, the gains outweigh the losses.
Indeed.
In the memory scene, Fox asked similarly:
"Your Majesty, doesn't the True God Church love to proclaim their exploits against evil?"
"Shouldn't they handle such matters?"
"They enjoy the people's faith yet don't fulfill corresponding duties, isn't that unreasonable?"
