Getting Stronger By Fighting

Chapter 436: Siege_1

For this reason, even though they were still insignificant students, the State Government specially dispatched personnel to secretly follow and escort them, preventing them from being attacked by beasts while wandering around. It had to be said that this was unprecedented treatment; at least in the Federation, no genius, not even Wang Zhan in his prime, had ever received such consideration.

Of course, for these students, even though they had all become Martial Artists in a practical sense, none of them could detect the Federation employees—who were not weak themselves—silently protecting them. This was because, for the Martial Management Bureau—which possessed an entire surveillance system for Quan State City and shared network review authority with the Internal Affairs Department—finding them quietly was essentially a trivial and easy task. This held true even if a target's actual ability had reached the Grandmaster Realm, allowing them to walk on air, as long as they did not disappear from the ground of Quan State City or hide completely.

Moreover, while fools rush in where angels fear to tread, tigers are always tigers; they do not become useless after a nap. Consequently, how could the unhidden routes these children took when they left, and all their possible movements, not be calculated by the Martial Artist Lords they had admired since they were old enough to understand!

Of course, the time before they were taken to the city wall by the personnel of the Martial Management Bureau was short, but for the warriors guarding the city wall, it felt like an eternity!

At this moment, it was near noon. The people on the city wall had no time to care about abstract things like morale or hope; they just hoped their time would pass faster, instead of the current, purgatory-like torment.

Therefore, near the city wall, many exhausted warriors were still roaring with all their strength. Even if their voices were hoarse, even if some of their words couldn't be heard clearly, they kept roaring. This was the only way they could rouse their spirits and temporarily awaken their numb consciousness.

"KILL!..."

"KILL! KILL! KILL!!..."

"Beasts, go back to your kennels! AHH!!!..."

Everywhere was filled with the sounds of killing, roars, and collisions. Human shadows occasionally entangled with exceptionally agile small beasts, or slashed down a huge beast that was about to climb the city wall. Sometimes, taking advantage of an opportunity, they would ruthlessly strike these hideous creatures' eyeballs, leaving them completely blind and bleeding profusely.

However, even though these mortals fought hard, the sharp teeth, claws, and dark, glossy fur of the beasts inflicted unbearable scars upon the Human Race, until their bodies were ragged and covered in blood and filth. Some warriors were so exhausted that they nearly died at the claws of the beasts, almost leading to further tragedies.

Beasts are powerful. The Human Race indeed possessed firearms, but the number held by Quan State was not nearly abundant enough to cope with the current situation; it was, at best, better than nothing. A large portion of the remaining firearms were obsolete items discarded by the Federation, hardly a match for these monsters! Apart from attacking their few weak points, their only choice was standard-issue weapons and close-quarters combat.

So for them, the world on the battlefield was always changing in an instant, with danger and death lurking everywhere. If you didn't want to die, you had to kill and pave a bloody path!

"KILL! KILL! KILL!!..."

"If you don't want to die, get down and let the next one come up!..."

"A big guy is coming up here! KILL!..."

Unfortunately, the agile bodies of the beasts, coupled with their innate hunting Talent, made them difficult to deal with. They could even use each other as ladders, stepping up to pressure the precarious city wall.

Then, a figure was seen constantly climbing, writhing, and roaring! Suddenly, it fiercely pounced. With a sudden gust of wind, it used the city wall to forcefully break through. Next, it was growling with bared teeth, mouth wide open, eyes glowing with ferocity. Looking around, all one could see was a bloody wind and a rain of red.

"ROAR!!!"

The next instant, accompanied by its roar, it looked as if the very mountains were shaking. One could imagine that this level of big guy was even more powerful than ten ferocious tigers combined. Therefore, this was undoubtedly a formidable opponent!

Plus, just looking at its sharp, cyan-glinting large fangs, anyone would know that being bitten would mean serious injury, if not death. Because within those massive jaws, a special kind of toxin was surely hidden—the big guy's most potent weapon when hunting.

Hence, someone immediately screamed, sounding a frantic alert, "It's an upper-class Soldier-level beast! Watch out!!..."

"Hurry, hurry, hurry! Retreat, retreat! Don't engage with it!! Where are the Martial Artists? Move this way quickly!..."

But what truly caused despair in everyone's heart was a fact many only just remembered: nearly half of the warriors among them, although Federation warriors, were ordinary people without any internal energy or martial arts aptitude. At most, they were responsible for minor tasks like guard duty and patrols!

Therefore, they were the slowest. Therefore, upon encountering such a beast, they had to retreat. Therefore, they were also the weakest and most fragile link, and fragility equated to death.

But there was no way around it. Even if they wanted to retreat, there was nowhere to go. The city wall beneath their feet was the last line of defence between life and death! Behind them were the pitiable, innocent, and even weaker ordinary people of Quan State!

This was all because the number of beasts in this invading Beast Clan group was simply too many, far too many! They were almost everywhere. As far as the eye could see, it was a sea of black! Among them were wolves, tigers, leopards, writhing Hyenas, and various other species with strange, imposing appearances! These were not native species of Earth, but genuine beast variants.

Additionally, there were various flying beasts of different sizes. Some soared in the air, some watched from afar, and some occasionally charged at the city wall, constantly trying to avoid the aim and attacks of the gunners on the wall. They sought to break a gap in the city's complete defence through incessant sneak attacks and probes.

One can only imagine how tense the situation was!

Thus, even though half of these soldiers were low-ranking Martial Artists, a minority were intermediate-stage Martial Artists, and there were even a dozen or so Grandmaster Realm experts rushing to support them, what could be done? Even if they truly had multiple heads and arms, at this moment, facing these ferocious and cunning beasts, they would likely be overwhelmed and unable to defend themselves.

It was just like the powerful upper-class Soldier-level beast that had appeared before them, comparable to a human in the Martial Master Realm. And this situation wasn't unique to this section of the city wall; it was happening everywhere, in at least a dozen other places.

Finally, when these soldiers could almost foresee their doom, surrounded by this beast with no place to retreat, BOOM! A huge roaring sound echoed.

The beast before their eyes seemed as if its entire immense weight was about to press down on the city wall. Then, in the blink of an eye, it pounced out again with a roar, its four limbs leaving the ground.

"ROAR!!..."

The sight sent a chill down their spines! This was its most powerful pouncing attack. Therefore, unless the opponent standing before it was a powerful Martial Artist who could crush it, any equally matched Martial Artists who approached would be doomed to a fate it had carefully orchestrated.

Furthermore, even its most vulnerable belly, on a beast's body, was almost as tough as a powerful Martial Artist's skin. That was a natural advantage and also an important source material for much of the Human Race's armor today. Therefore, it wasn't so easy to break through!

At this moment, some were so scared they nearly stumbled and fell. However, not everyone was afraid. Some, fuming with anger, glanced at the cowards around them. Then, even knowing they might die, they firmly clutched their weapons, preparing to swing them hard at the crucial moment. Either they would disembowel this monster, or this monster would swallow them whole!

However, it was apparent to everyone that when facing such an inhuman monster, no ordinary person had any qualification to defy it. Thus, some had already foreseen this person's impending doom. Then, someone else, terrified by the beast's ferocity, could barely hold their weapon and instinctively wanted to turn and flee. After all, not everyone is so brave.

Luckily, the vast majority of the soldiers could truly be called absolute warriors. For they understood, better than those pitiable souls trembling in terror, the consequences of showing fear. Long ago, they had witnessed far too many tragedies born from the folly of exposing one's back to these brutal creatures.
