In the evening, Pan Lei was both excited and apprehensive. To make matters worse, her child was a restless sleeper, which made it even harder for her to fall asleep. Her husband, exhausted from a long day, was already sound asleep beside her. She tossed and turned until sleepiness finally overtook her, and she fell into a deep slumber.
The next day, she woke up in a daze, her body accustomed to rising early to care for her child. She hurriedly shook her husband awake. "Get up! I have to go to work today, so you need to stay home and watch the child."
Jiang Ming, still groggy, snapped awake at her words.
Pan Lei put porridge on to cook and steamed the buns they had bought the previous evening. She also fished out a few small, pickled red radishes from their pickling jar. After a flurry of activity, all that was left was to wait for the porridge to be ready. Only then did she have a moment to get herself ready.
When she went into the bedroom, however, she found him still lying in bed. She frowned in frustration.
"Get up!"
Hearing the edge in his wife's tone, Jiang Ming jolted upright. "I'm up, I'm up."
Pan Lei sighed softly and sat down at her vanity to put on makeup. She hadn't really worn any since the baby was born, going barefaced most of the time. Fortunately, she had naturally striking features and a good complexion. She had also studied dance when she was younger, so she had always maintained an excellent figure. With just a little effort, she looked stunning.
When Jiang Ming came out of the bathroom, he was mesmerized by the sight of his wife. "Honey, you're so beautiful!"
No woman alive dislikes hearing praise from her husband. Pan Lei smiled faintly and gave him a gentle push. "Move aside, I need to pick out my clothes."
Over the past few years, she hadn't bought many decent outfits, prioritizing clothes that were practical for taking care of a child. Luckily, she had kept her figure in shape, so her old clothes still fit perfectly. She examined her reflection from different angles, a satisfied smile gracing her lips.
"Honey, you're so beautiful. I'm sure someone at work will take an interest in you..." he started, his voice trailing off nervously. "When that happens, will you look down on your husband for being a short, poor, unsuccessful guy?"
"Honey? Honey? Why aren't you answering me?"
Pan Lei just rolled her eyes, letting him stew in his own thoughts. As if to say, *Dream on if you think I'm going to humor you.*
Just then, their child woke up.
Pan Lei reminded him, "Take the child to the bathroom, wash his face, brush his teeth, and then get him something to eat."
She went to the kitchen and portioned out breakfast for the three of them. "Honey, I'm eating first."
Jiang Ming's voice drifted from the bathroom. "Honey, do you want me to drive you to work later?"
"There's no time," Pan Lei replied between bites. "It's my first day, so I need to get there early."
By the time Jiang Ming finished taking care of their son, Pan Lei was already at the door, putting on her shoes and ready to leave.
She gave her son a quick kiss. "Sweetie, Mommy has to go to work today. I won't be back until tonight. Daddy will be taking care of you today, okay?"
Then she turned to Jiang Ming with a list of instructions. "Make sure you keep a close eye on him when you go out, understand? Especially when you're crossing the street or in a crowded place. You have to hold his hand and not let him run off, got it? And don't let him eat random things from outside; we don't want him to get an upset stomach again. If you're not sure about anything, just call me!"
Having said her piece, Pan Lei rushed out the door, leaving the father and son to stare at each other.
"Alright," Jiang Ming said finally. "Let's go eat."
「At the same time that morning.」
Zhang Yuxi kissed her husband and children goodbye. "Honey, I only have one class this morning, so I can be home early."
"In that case," Lin Feng said, "could you stop by the supermarket on your way back and pick up some groceries?"
"What kind of groceries?"
"Just get whatever you like."
"Alright."
His plan for the day was to make lunch, wait for Zhang Yuxi to get home, and then take the babies to their early education class after their afternoon nap. One day blurred into the next, filled with the same peaceful routine.
That evening, Lin Feng called Wang Zhihua and received a glowing review of Pan Lei. She was described as hardworking, conscientious, and eager to learn. Since her major had been hotel management, her professional knowledge was already quite strong.
The next morning, Jiang Ming called, asking Zhang Yuxi when she would be free, hoping to invite their family over for dinner one evening. Pan Lei got off work at nine, which meant dinner would be late. After some discussion, they agreed on Friday night.
It was Zhang Yuxi's first time visiting Jiang Chenchen's home. From the entryway, the entire layout of the living room was clear at a glance.
Jiang Ming was in the middle of cleaning and hadn't expected them to arrive so early. He quickly ushered them inside. "Sorry, the house is a bit of a mess. I'm still cleaning up."
Seeing Jiang Ming flustered and busy, Lin Feng asked, "You've been looking after the kid by yourself these last few days, right? Having trouble managing on your own?"
Jiang Ming chuckled. "It's alright. It was a bit chaotic at first, but I'm used to it now."
The children were already in the living room, hitting it off instantly. Little Jiang Chenchen was very enthusiastic, even offering his toys to Zhang Yuxi.
"Thank you, thank you!" Zhang Yuxi said quickly.
Fourth Treasure asked curiously, "Why is this Ultraman's hand broken?"
Jiang Chenchen replied, "Because he fought a Transformer… and he… he lost, so it broke."
The Transformer in First Treasure's hand was also missing an arm, its severed limb lying on the floor nearby.
First Treasure came running over. "Mom, can you fix this for me?"
Zhang Yuxi took the toy. "Mommy will try, but I can't promise I can fix it!" After fiddling with it for a while, she gave up.
First Treasure then ran to find Lin Feng.
Using his handyman skills, Lin Feng had it fixed in a jiffy. Although it wasn't perfectly restored, it was functional again. This made First Treasure ecstatic. He took the repaired Transformer and ran back to show it off to Fourth Treasure and Jiang Chenchen.
"See? My dad fixed it! He can do anything. He's super awesome!"
Jiang Chenchen immediately retorted, "My dad's awesome too! He can even fix houses."
First Treasure paused for a second, then pressed his advantage. "But your dad can't fix Transformers. So my dad is still more awesome."
Meanwhile, Jiang Ming was still tidying up. He wasn't skilled at domestic chores and felt completely exhausted.
Lin Feng went to the kitchen to wash his hands and noticed that aside from the rice in the steamer, all the raw groceries were still sitting on the counter. He couldn't help but ask, "When does Pan Lei get off work?"
"She gets home around nine."
Lin Feng was left speechless. By the time they cooked and sat down to eat, it would be nearly ten o'clock. The children would be fine; they had been fed before coming over and would only need a small bite later.
"What are you guys planning to make for dinner?" Lin Feng asked.
Cooking wasn't Jiang Ming's strong suit. "I don't know," he admitted. "She just texted me a list of things to buy."
Lin Feng glanced at the ingredients and made a rough guess as to what dishes Pan Lei had in mind. He returned to the living room just as Jiang Ming finished his cleaning. Jiang Ming brought out a platter of fruit and some loose pastries from the supermarket.
"Help yourselves!"
Half an hour slipped by. It was now their usual dinner time, and Zhang Yuxi hadn't eaten much for lunch at school. She was already starving. Though not a fan of snacks, she found herself eating several of the small pastries. They were tasty but overly rich, and she quickly grew tired of them.
While Jiang Ming was on the phone with Pan Lei, Zhang Yuxi leaned over and whispered to her husband. "Honey, I'm hungry..."
At home with Lin Feng, their three meals were always served right on time. She had gotten so used to the routine that her stomach now rumbled like clockwork.
Lin Feng patted her hand. "Alright, if you can't wait, I'll go cook."
Zhang Yuxi nodded. "Okay."
In her eyes, nobody could cook as well as her husband. She had grown so accustomed to Lin Feng's culinary skills that her palate had become quite picky.
