Lin Feng drove the babies home for their afternoon nap, but they had already fallen asleep in the car before they even arrived. He had no choice but to carry them, one by one, into the small room off the living room. Lin Feng had converted this room into a small children's lounge, saving him the trouble of carrying the babies upstairs.
While the babies napped, Lin Feng called Zhang Yuxi as he tidied up the toys scattered around the living room.
"Honey, you have no idea, so many people saw you kiss me just now."
He couldn't help but picture what Zhang Yuxi must look like right now, feigning indignation.
"So what if they saw?" he replied. "How else do you think we got our children?"
Smooth. Very smooth.
His retort left Zhang Yuxi speechless. After a long pause, she finally managed to stammer, "Honey, you—you can't say things like that..."
Lin Feng chuckled. "What did I do?"
Zhang Yuxi whispered, "Stop it, you know what I mean!"
Lin Feng stopped teasing her. "Honey, what do you want for dinner tonight?"
"I'll love anything you cook."
"Really?" The innocent Zhang Yuxi didn't pick up on the subtle change in his tone at all.
"Yep! As long as you're the one making it, I'd love even a simple bowl of noodles!"
"So, you love my noodles, huh?" When Lin Feng said this, he put a suggestive emphasis on certain words.
Zhang Yuxi froze for a second before the double meaning hit her. "Honey, you... you...!"
"I'll let you have a taste some other day," Lin Feng teased.
Zhang Yuxi huffed, "I'm not talking to you anymore!" With that, she hung up.
Lin Feng went back to cleaning. He still had to take the babies to their early education class in a little while.
That evening, Zhang Yuxi was surprised to find they were, in fact, having noodles for dinner. She hadn't been lying, though. She really did love any noodles made by Lin Feng.
「The next day」
Zhang Yuxi woke up to find she didn't have classes. Of course. Lin Feng must have planned this all along. Why else would he have been so energetic last night?
Since it was the weekend and the weather was nice, the family decided to go on a picnic. Lin Feng started preparing food and fruit.
While Zhang Yuxi packed the children's things, she asked, "Honey, should we invite Jiang Ming, too?"
Lin Feng had no objection. "You should call him. I don't know him very well."
Lin Feng nodded, dialing the phone as he continued to pack the food.
"Jiang Ming," he said, "we're going for a picnic today. You and your son should come along."
"Sorry," Jiang Ming replied, "I was planning to take my son to his grandma's house today."
"Oh, I see."
"Why don't you come with us?" Jiang Ming suggested. "You could bring the babies to get some fresh country air and enjoy the scenery."
Lin Feng was surprised. "Let me talk it over with my wife. When are you leaving?"
"I was just about to leave. Everything's packed. Talk about a coincidence, huh?"
Lin Feng agreed it was quite a coincidence. "Okay, just give me five minutes."
"Alright."
"What's up?" Zhang Yuxi asked after he hung up.
"That was Jiang Ming. He's heading to his wife's family home in the countryside and invited us to come along. He said there's beautiful scenery and fresh air, and that it would be nice for the kids to see it."
Zhang Yuxi's eyes lit up. "That's great! I've lived my whole life without ever staying in the countryside."
Lin Feng considered it for a moment. "Alright, let's go check out the countryside then. We won't have to worry about a place to stay. We can take the RV and just sleep in it for the night."
At the suggestion, Zhang Yuxi grew even more excited.
It was nearly November, so the temperature difference between day and night was significant. They packed plenty of clothes, extra blankets, and some of the meat they had cured previously. They also brought the babies' snacks, milk powder, and some easy-to-prepare food for them, like fine noodles and small shrimp wontons. The adults could rough it, but the babies needed their comforts.
Once everything was ready, Lin Feng drove the RV to pick up Jiang Ming and Jiang Chenchen.
Jiang Ming's eyes widened. "Wow, this is an RV!"
He was admiring the novelty of it, but he wasn't overly shocked. After all, Lin Feng was a wealthy man.
Jiang Chenchen and the babies happily ran off to explore the vehicle, while Jiang Ming sat in the passenger seat to give Lin Feng directions.
After more than an hour of driving, the surroundings grew increasingly remote. The GPS was unreliable out here, so they had to depend entirely on Jiang Ming's guidance. Along the way, he gave them a general overview of his mother-in-law's situation.
Pan Lei's parents lived in a two-story house they had built themselves. Their relationship with their daughter had become very strained because of her marriage to Jiang Ming, only easing slightly after Jiang Chenchen was born. It was only in the last year or two that Pan Lei's parents had started to warm up to him. He had called ahead, so they were expecting them.
His mother-in-law was in good health. They found her in the yard, shelling peanuts she planned to fry later to have with some drinks. She watched as a white RV, a vehicle she had never seen before, slowly pulled into the yard. Her yard didn't have a fence since she didn't keep any chickens or ducks. Besides their family, there was only one other house nearby.
Pan Lei's mother squinted, keeping her distance from the strange vehicle.
"Mom!"
"Grandma!"
The moment she saw her son-in-law and grandson, a wide smile spread across her face. "You're here so soon! And who is this...? Oh my, look at all these children! One, two, three, four... Gracious, are they quadruplets? Aren't they adorable!"
Jiang Ming made the introductions. "Mom, this is my friend, Lin Feng, and this is his wife, Zhang Yuxi. These are their children. They're classmates of Chenchen's."
"Oh!" Pan Lei's mother exclaimed, the atmosphere in the yard suddenly growing lively. She warmly welcomed Lin Feng's family into the house.
Lin Feng started unloading things from the RV. "Auntie, where should we put all this?" He brought out fruit, milk, nutritional supplements, and even some fresh vegetables and fish.
Pan Lei's mother ushered them inside. "Just put it all here, put it here!" she said, adding, "You shouldn't have! Just coming for a visit is more than enough."
Lin Feng smiled. "It was our pleasure."
Pan Lei's mother asked warmly, "Have you all eaten? If not, I can whip up a bowl of noodles for you."
Lin Feng quickly replied, "We've already eaten, thank you."
Pan Lei's mother brought some benches out into the yard. "Come, come, sit down!" She then bustled back into the house and returned with sunflower seeds, peanuts, and other little snacks. "This is all we have in the house," she said with a smile. "Please, help yourselves!"
Lin Feng and Zhang Yuxi quickly thanked her.
The house was built right on the side of the road and lacked a fence. Motorcycles and other vehicles would occasionally pass by, so they had to keep a close eye on the babies.
"Mom, where's Dad?" Jiang Ming asked.
"He went with some others to plant trees. He isn't back yet."
"Planting trees?"
"Yes, he earns seventy to eighty yuan a day."
"When does he usually get back?"
"Around five in the afternoon, right as it starts to get dark."
With that, Pan Lei's mother stood up. "You all stay and relax. I'm going to the cookhouse to get dinner started."
Jiang Ming followed her. "Mom, let me help."
"I don't need any help. Go back and keep your friends company. Watch the children."
The large yard was paved entirely with concrete. Lin Feng worried that if the children were running around and fell, they could get badly hurt. A scrape or a bump on concrete would be incredibly painful.
He secretly cast a [Protection Barrier] on the babies, though he wasn't sure if it would be effective in this situation. The barrier was designed to block external harm, but he had no idea if it would protect against self-inflicted injuries.
