The Aloof Girl Opens the Door of Her Heart Only to Him

chapter 28 - Mission.

“Brother Gu, what do you think?” Ren Yongnian asked.“I accept as well.”With Gu Yuan’s clear answer, Ren Yongnian lifted his teacup—paying no mind to the now‐cold tea—and proclaimed in a hearty voice, “Here’s to our successful cooperation!”“Mm.”“To successful cooperation!”Title PanelTitle Name: Fated Marriage? Doesn’t Matter—I Will Intervene (named by Contracted Member Bai YouShou)Title Level: ★★★★ ❖ Nоvеl𝚒ght ❖ (Exclusive on Nоvеl𝚒ght) (levels range from ★ to ★★★★★★★★★)Effect: When equipped, the first time a World’s Progeny meets the wearer, they gain +10 initial Favor.Note: Favor ranges from –100 to +100; numerical value may differ from actual sentiment.Back in her quarters, Fang Qing examined the title’s panel, nodded lightly, and equipped it. She figured there was no harm in stacking up favor—finishing her quests would be that much easier.Afterward, she extinguished the lights and lay down, determined to rest early. As Luo Tiangan’s disciple, she had accepted his benefits—and agreed to Ren Yongnian’s terms—meaning she and Gu Yuan must feign rivalry with him. The real contest between Fire and Gold factions now hinged on the support of numerous neutral elders who desired a strong sect. To win their backing, both power and freedom must be displayed—best achieved by field missions. Beginning tomorrow, Fang Qing, Gu Yuan, and Ren Yongnian would venture outside the sect to complete challenging tasks. They needn’t excel—only demonstrate they rivaled Ren Yongnian in strength.Days passed. On the twenty‐first day since arriving in this world, Fang Qing and Gu Yuan continued undertaking assignments around the Fire-Gold Sect. Secretly hunting for the Wood Kirin Fragment remained fruitless. Yet their deeds had begun to circulate nearby—alongside an irritating new epithet: the “Phoenix Twin Stars.” Fang Qing bristled at the name, wondering why it stuck, and recalled Gu Yuan’s amused silence when she’d asked him about it. She suspected he’d spread it himself.Returning to the present, Fang Qing and Gu Yuan stood in a street of Weiping City, waiting quietly for their client. His name was Yin Mo, an alchemist closely tied to the sect. Today he planned to gather herbs in a perilous area and had requested escort—along with a handsome reward. Gu Yuan had promptly accepted, bringing them to this meeting point. After a short while, a man in moon-white robes emerged from the crowd. His long hair was tied up; his complexion pale and clear, and he exuded the faint scent of herbs. Recognizing them, he cupped his hands in greeting.“I didn’t expect the Fire-Gold Sect’s Twin Stars to serve as my guards. I’ve long admired you both.”Fang Qing remained silent, and Gu Yuan replied courteously, “Brother Yin, you’ve cooperated with our sect for a long time. Since you need us, we’re honored to oblige.”With polite exchanges concluded, Yin Mo outlined his task: to journey to a mountain called Baldrock Mountain and gather rare medicinal specimens. The mountain was home to many spirit beasts, hence the need for protection. Two hours later, the trio arrived at Baldrock’s base. True to its name, the mountain was dotted with bare gray rock, sparse greenery, and wide‐open sightlines. Yin Mo retrieved three small pouches from his storage ring—one for himself and two for Fang Qing and Gu Yuan.Dispensing the contents onto their garments, he explained, “This is Beast-Repel Dust. It should keep lesser creatures from approaching.”They nodded, scattering the dust around themselves, then began the ascent—vigilant for both predators and the herbs they sought.Their progress was smooth. They encountered only a few small beasts; none posed real threat. Yin Mo carefully uprooted a strange, gray-black flower blending with the rocks, placing it in a jade box. Wiping sweat from his brow, he turned to them.“This went well. Let’s descend.”But no sooner had he spoken than dozens of white lightning streaks appeared on the horizon, arcing toward Baldrock’s summit. All three followed the streaks with their eyes—and realized they were dozens of cultivators flying on swords!“They must be from Thundercliff. We need to leave—now!” Yin Mo urged, his voice rapid.Without waiting for further warning, Fang Qing and Gu Yuan raced down the path, Yin Mo close behind.Thundercliff had once rivaled the Fire-Gold Sect; although full-scale war had not broken out, skirmishes were frequent. Knowing these pursuers aimed to harass the sect, Yin Mo’s urgency made sense.Within moments they reached a mid-mountain ledge. Pausing, Fang Qing glanced back. The sky was empty—Thundercliff’s swordsmen had not followed. Even so, she continued downward. Danger still lingered. But after only a short run, she halted. Before and all around them, wild beasts and spirit beasts poured onto the slopes. On the ground, countless creatures stampeded toward the peak; above, flocks of birds wheeled upward in unison.Standing together, the three exchanged a determined look—no need to ask why the beasts rioted, though Thundercliff’s interference was likely the spark. Their sect loyalties were shallow; if Ren Yongnian were here, he might flee toward the summit. But none of them were Ren Yongnian. Now, their only thought was the same:Survive!
