Chapter 35: Kitchen Hunt
As Vilnia Randell's words fell, the three Omniscience Society believers had already rushed toward the two of them.
The curtain of shadows was easily torn apart.
The sharp bird beaks glinted with a cold light like a grim reaper's scythe.
Just as the needle was about to pierce Mel's skin, the combat instinct branded within Mel was instantly activated.
The next moment, her figure disappeared from where she was and reappeared five meters away.
Void Walk!
At this moment, Vilnia Randell had no time to worry about Mel.
She casually grabbed the dinner knife and fork next to her, using them as weapons to confront the remaining people.
The surrounding shadows were restless under Vilnia Randell's control, like a hound ready to attack.
Mel looked around, then grabbed the dinner knife from the table and threw it like a throwing knife.
The bird-beak masked person dodged, his speed not slowing as he attacked Mel.
Mel's figure flickered again, then appeared two meters away.
After groping her way through it for the past few days, she had roughly figured out the principle of Void Walk.
The shorter the distance traveled, the less Quintessence is consumed!
If she were to move fifty meters in one go, she could only use it at most twice, and that's on the premise of overdrawing Quintessence.
But if she only moves a few meters at a time, the consumption of Quintessence would not only be greatly reduced, but she wouldn't even need to set an anchor point.
After several leaps, Mel had reached the kitchen of the dessert shop.
The bird-beak masked person seemed confident about catching Mel.
He completely ignored Vilnia Randell and chased after her with the syringe in his hand.
Seeing this, Mel turned and ran into the kitchen, then slammed the door shut.
"Crack!"
The kitchen door was kicked open.
The dark silhouette of the bird-beak masked person was cast in the doorframe.
“Hiss—!”
High-pressure steam gushed out from the broken pipe, enveloping the entire kitchen in a white mist.
The hot vapor filled the air, blurring the formerly clear vision.
Mel hid behind the cast-iron oven, her breathing a little ragged, but her eyes were still calm.
She gently rubbed the moon disc mark on the back of her right hand, like a patient hunter looking for the most suitable moment to strike.
The eyes hidden behind the mask glinted with a dangerous and fanatical light.
The syringe in his hand had a cold metallic sheen under the light.
"Container, don't make useless struggles."
A hoarse male voice came from under the mask.
"You can't escape. Hand over the Quintessence obediently.”
“Drip—drip—”
Water droplets slid down from the pipes on the ceiling.
They were exceptionally clear in the silent kitchen, joining the sound of footsteps to play a tense symphony.
“Clang—!”
Mel picked up a metal tray and threw it forcefully to the side.
Taking advantage of the moment the other person turned their head, she activated Void Walk again to change her position.
(Only thirty percent of Quintessence left... I can't stall any longer.)
(By the Red Moon, great lord of sacrifice and the hunt, I will fulfill my promise. I will offer the heart of a heretic to you. Please witness my hunt.)
As the girl's silent prayer concluded, the mark on the back of her hand became increasingly hot, as if urging a kill.
The bird-beak masked person approached the source of the sound.
The brass syringe in his hand glinted coldly in the steam.
Just as he was about to approach the tray, Mel suddenly launched a surprise attack from the other side.
“Clink!”
The carved cake knife clashed with the syringe, making a crisp sound of metal colliding.
Mel used the momentum to retreat, but her skirt accidentally knocked over the enamel cream pot behind her.
Seeing this, she casually caught it and then threw it toward the person.
The milky white cream drew a beautiful arc in the air, splattering like scattered pearls.
The bird-beak masked person's vision was blocked by the cream.
Mel seized this fleeting opportunity.
She lunged forward, and the cake knife in her hand stabbed hard into the person's ribs.
"As if!”
The bird-beak masked person grabbed the lunging blade with one hand, letting the blade embed itself in his palm, refusing to allow it to advance even a fraction of an inch.
At the same time, he used his arm to pull forward, and with his other hand, he raised the syringe and stabbed forward, pointing directly at the other person's carotid artery.
But he lunged at empty air.
On the other end of the blade, there was no one anymore.
Mel appeared silently behind him.
The New Moon rose in the hunter's hand.
The fourth Void Walk!
The smell of death, wrapped in a bitter orange blossom scent, rushed over.
The dark red patterns on the blade instantly became active.
Even the moonstones inlaid on it were cheering for the upcoming hunt.
“Puchi!”
The blade pierced his heart from behind.
The bird-beak masked person stumbled and fell forward, hitting the hanging smoked ham and tea set.
The broken Victorian bone china tea set was embedded in the pool of blood.
The silver-plated dinner fork and the Gothic-font menu reflected the yellow halo of the gas lamp, appearing hazy in the steam and mist.
Mel slowly walked forward and raised her hand to pull out the New Moon.
The dark red blade looked as if it had been bathed in blood, and the corpse's heart was already gone.
Looking at the corpse lying in a pool of blood, Mel was silent for a moment, seemingly thinking about what to do next.
Just then, the long-absent gibberish sounded in her ear.
Those whispers lingered like ghosts in Mel's ear, with an enticing sweetness and an irresistible majesty.
She stood in the center of the kitchen.
A mixed scent of steam and blood filled the air around her.
The girl's breathing gradually stabilized, but her eyes were still gleaming with the excitement of the hunt.
The New Moon trembled slightly in her hand, as if celebrating the recent kill.
The girl took a deep look at the corpse, then put away her weapon and spoke to the corpse.
She said:
"Get up."
Mel walked out of the kitchen.
The battle outside had also come to an end.
Vilnia Randell was standing in front of two men in black trench coats, seemingly cooperating with an investigation.
Seeing Mel appear, Vilnia Randell's eyes immediately lit up.
She then quickly ran toward Mel.
"That's great, you're okay, Mel.”
Vilnia Randell said, then checked Mel for injuries.
Only after confirming that she was truly unharmed did she breathe a sigh of relief.
"What about the person who was chasing you?"
Vilnia Randell asked.
"He ran away."
Mel answered, "I hid in the kitchen, and he couldn't find me inside. Then, I don't know how, he suddenly escaped through the window, and that's when I dared to come out.”
The two men in black exchanged a meaningful glance.
One of them took out a notebook and began to record the scene.
The other person walked toward the broken window and carefully examined the glass shards on the ground.
"These two are...."
"They're from the Fifth Department.”
Vilnia Randell explained, "You must have already seen it, right? I mean... that kind of situation. Actually, to be honest, there's a certain kind of supernatural power that exists in this world, and the Fifth Department is specialized in dealing with these kinds of situations.”
Mel nodded, her gaze falling on the investigators who were inspecting the scene.
Their movements were professional and skilled.
They were clearly no strangers to these types of incidents.
"Don't worry. They don't have any malicious intentions, but we need to cooperate with the investigation."
Vilnia Randell held Mel's hand.
"But before that, you'd better change your clothes.”
Only then did Mel notice that her skirt was covered in cream and water stains.
Vilnia Randell took off her coat and draped it over her, completely covering any potential bloodstains.
As she draped the coat over Mel, Vilnia Randell leaned close to Mel's ear and whispered.
"Don't worry, I won't tell anyone else your secret.”
