Chapter 17. Dekan Start Looking for the Next Victim
"Cornelia, follow me."
As the first to run out of the examination hall, I didn't rush to flee with Cornelia.
Instead, I signaled for her to hide with me around a nearby corridor corner and wait.
Only after some demon students had run out did Cornelia and I mix in behind them.
There could very well be dangers in the corridor; I had to let this group of demon students scout the way.
Cornelia and I kept our heads down and followed the main group.
This corridor was like a maze.
Whenever there was a fork in the road, the students would split into several groups.
At these times, I would choose to follow the largest group.
If you just arrived at a new school and didn't know how to get to important facilities like the cafeteria or the library, following the direction with the most people was the right thing to do.
Of course, these demon students were obviously not going for a meal or to study.
From the looks of them, it was more like they were looking for a "shelter."
Once in the corridor, they didn't even dare to run, only walking briskly with light steps.
This made me even more certain that moving around freely in the corridor would be dangerous.
Except for Cornelia.
Because she was the only student who had left the examination hall through proper means.
That red demon ticket's effect was probably to avoid the "dangers" in the corridor.
"Which way are we going?"
Cornelia asked me in a whisper as soft as a mosquito's buzz.
Her words had become exceptionally fluent, but she had also realized she couldn't speak loudly.
"Just follow me."
"Okay, thank you for what you did in the examination hall just now."
The Shadow World had a mechanism for automatic language unification, so even if I was matched with challengers from other countries, and even if the Shadow World had a special background story and worldview, there would be no language barrier.
Cornelia seemed very happy after discovering that she could communicate smoothly with me. Communication in the Shadow World was so much freer than in the real world.
"It's a small thing. I was better at handling the rules of the first classroom. It might be your turn to contribute next."
I thought for a moment, then asked, "By the way, what do I look like right now?"
"You look pretty much the same as you originally did, um... maybe a little better-looking," Cornelia replied after careful consideration.
"...Then I probably know what species I am."
I didn't want to say it out loud.
But to be fair, it might be useful.
"Don't we need to meet up with the other challengers?" Cornelia asked.
"No need. The six of us exploring separately is more efficient. Just the two of us is enough."
After all, the mission requirement of this Shadow World was not a six-person joint decryption, but a map exploration type of race against time.
I observed the exploration progress displayed for Mission Objective 1.
Although it was increasing, the rate of increase was very slow.
This indicated that the exploration progress was not entirely dependent on the area covered.
Perhaps different locations in the Demon Academy had different weights for exploration progress, and more dangerous places might correspond to higher exploration progress.
Besides.
Not entirely trustworthy, not really needed, and I didn't feel like dealing with them.
Three sufficient reasons for me to not contact the other challengers for the time being.
I neither wanted to encounter deadweights who would get in the way, nor did I want to meet a big brother who would order me around.
Having a super fighter like Cornelia, with whom I had a tacit understanding, by my side was enough.
I had already done my utmost by helping the other four leave the examination hall quickly.
Temporarily ignoring the situation of the other challengers, I noticed that there were fewer and fewer demon students around.
Many demon students had already found classrooms along the way and hidden inside.
It was time to make a move.
Now, even if a demon student suddenly disappeared from the front, it wouldn't be noticed by the other demons.
"Cornelia, go invite a demon over for a chat."
"Okay."
Cornelia suddenly quickened her pace and placed her hand on the shoulder of a demon student in front of her.
The demon student whipped his head around, his face full of anger as he looked at Cornelia, just about to lash out.
"Courting death..."
However, he found that only his head could move; his body couldn't turn at all.
He couldn't move!
It was as if a small mountain was pressing down on his shoulder!
This wasn't a pat on the shoulder; this was a grapple!
If she used a little more force, his shoulder would be crushed!
Meeting her gaze, the demon student was so frightened that he couldn't speak. Cornelia's cold eyes, belonging to an absolute superior, and the terrifying power emanating from her body made him tremble with fear.
And that guy behind her...
Wasn't he the main culprit who turned the examination hall upside down?!
These two had been following behind him all this time, how terrifying!
I walked to the demon student's side and asked in a very soft and gentle voice, "Why are you all running?"
The demon student gritted his teeth for a moment upon hearing the question, yet he didn't dare to get angry.
He thought to himself: If it weren't for you, you bastard, we could have peacefully stayed in the examination hall to pass the time. Why would we need to be scared and worried in the corridor!
But he could only answer honestly, "...It's not time for class to be over yet. If we run into the dean in the corridor, we'll be killed."
I replied: "Continue, for example, when is class considered over."
The demon student said: "After every hour of class, there's a thirty-minute break. We can only move freely in the corridors during the break. There will be music prompts in the school when class starts and ends."
I nodded.
No wonder the students were all looking for classrooms.
Skipping class could get you killed.
The school rules were strict, and the learning atmosphere was upright.
My evaluation of this school rose again.
However, it seemed my actions just now had screwed over the demon examinees who could have originally done the exam questions.
For the demons, that examination hall was actually a gentle game. They could have safely passed the time for two classes and one break inside the examination hall before coming out.
But I blew up the examination hall, and they were forced to participate in the horror games of other classrooms.
No wonder this demon student looked like he wanted to kill me so badly, I thought to myself.
Alas, boundless merit.
As Buddha said, screwing over demons is not a lack of virtue.
"What classroom is this up ahead?" I asked, pointing forward.
We were now standing in a rather stylish corridor.
Classical oil lamps illuminated the lifelike demon portraits on the walls of the long corridor, a touch of elegance amidst the horror.
Moving forward, one could see a carpet with magnificent patterns laid on the floor, leading straight to the end.
If I wasn't mistaken, it would probably be an art classroom.
I should be quite good at games related to painting.
The demon student: "It's the cooking classroom."
Me: "???"
Was it necessary to make the scenery near the cooking classroom so stylish?
Was this what they called high-class demons?
"Forget it, this one will do."
There weren't many demon students left to scout the way, and it would be dangerous to continue walking.
I walked straight towards the classroom at the end of the carpet.
The demon student wanted to quickly turn a corner and escape, to get far away from these two jinxes, but found that Cornelia had no intention of letting go.
Her grip gradually turned into a hold on the demon student's arm, escorting him forward.
"Fellow student, to meet is fate. Join us," I said with a smile.
This smile sent shivers down the demon student's spine.
You guys want to use me as cannon fodder, don't you!
