Save Me, Scrapper!

chapter 8

Ji Hayeon rolled his eyes and knit his brows. From his expression, he seemed to be retracing yesterday, but the memory wasn’t intact.“I definitely… used a sealing body. It was under research, but it worked….”Aha. As expected. So that was a new sealing body.“You didn’t… blow up the 43rd floor, did you?”He asked with a look of disbelief.“Not on purpose. It just kind of turned out that way.”“Don’t be ridiculous… you’re lying, right?”“I’ve got no reason to lie.”“You really… blew it up?”He keeps talking down to me.Sawon lifted the bedside card with the patient info. Under the three characters of Ji Hayeon’s name, the listed birth year was the same as his. What little honorific tone clinging to Sawon’s mouth flew off.“Sorry, but it’s true. So give it up and stay put here until the cleanup’s done.”Ji Hayeon yanked out the IV needle, suddenly shoved Sawon aside, and walked to the table. He turned on the TV with the remote and flipped channels; it wasn’t hard to confirm the truth. The news rolled on, echoing through the quiet room. Ji Hayeon’s body began to tremble finely.“…The Deaters.”“The 43rd floor was handled.”“The other floors.”“Mm… should I have swept everything while I was at it?”Ji Hayeon fixed a cold stare on him. Watching the wavering focus, Sawon twitched a brow.“Don’t worry. They cut off the entire building… hey!”While he spoke, Ji Hayeon’s legs were already striding for the door. Sawon sprang up and grabbed his wrist. But—thwack, with a rough scrape, Ji Hayeon slapped his hand away.“I used an inducer on purpose so you people wouldn’t smash things. What the hell did you do? The 43rd floor… do you even know how important that place is?”At his words, the question lingering in Sawon cleared up.'The place presumed to have formed the black sphere is the lower floors. That’s where the biggest reaction came from.'So this guy did something. While Sawon rewound the dawn’s chaos, Ji Hayeon’s hand touched the doorknob.“I have to check the specimens first.”The door burst open and a startled voice came from outside.“Ah, you scared me. Sir, you mustn’t get up. Goodness, even the IV needle is out…!”The spooked medic checked his arm. But Ji Hayeon pulled free and headed out with finality.“There’s nothing wrong with my body. I’ll be discharged immediately, so don’t—ugh!”He didn’t make it more than a few steps before he was dragged back as if by a magnet. Sawon’s arm was locked tight around his neck.“Where do you think you’re going.”He hauled Ji Hayeon back without mercy, dragging him to the bed. Then he flung him down.“Ugh, what are you doing!”Even as he shouted, his body was still trembling faintly. He sprang up like a spring—only to be thrown back down by Sawon. Pinning his neck to the mattress with a rough hand, Sawon spoke.“You know you’re not supposed to shout in a hospital, Chief. Basic etiquette.”“Let go of this?!”He thrashed to get up, but with his stamina drained, there was no beating a Grade 1 hunter’s strength. Wearing a blank face, ✧ NоvеIight ✧ (Original source) Sawon held his neck down and looked at him dully.“If I let you go like this, I’ll get an earful from Director Kwon. I’ve got orders to keep you safe. And in that body, where exactly do you think you’re going to—”Sawon’s eyebrow twitched as he stared. Blood was running from Ji Hayeon’s nose. He clicked his tongue.“You throw a fit like that and you think your body holds up.”He glanced at the medic and shaped the words with his mouth.'You have a sedative, right?'The medic nodded at once. The moment Sawon released him, Ji Hayeon sprang from his grasp—only to be caught again before he could plant a single step. Sitting on the bed’s edge, Sawon pulled his upper body back from behind. Bound by long arms and legs, he grit his teeth. Just then the medic returned with a syringe.“I’m not playing games here. Do you know how much critical data is in there…!”“I’ll pass it to the post-processing team, so treatment first. Doctor, please give him the shot.”“Yes, understood.”Playing along with Sawon’s glibness, the medic answered. Ji Hayeon stamped his foot and struggled.“Let me go first!”But Sawon’s hands were stone; they didn’t budge. Slitted eyes, he side-eyed Ji Hayeon.“If I let you go, you’ll just run.”Flushed with anger, Ji Hayeon’s face went red. The medic hesitated only a moment, then deftly gave the injection. The faint trembling of Ji Hayeon’s body slowly loosened. He bit his lip.As if to calm him, Sawon tapped his chest perfunctorily. It was the habit that came out whenever he soothed Nine. The medic drew blood and dropped it into a small tube, then swirled it. He spoke in a low voice.“Metena recovery is far too slow. It seems Deater fluids are still in the body and affecting things. Now that the patient is awake, we should probably bathe him first.”“Where do we wash him?”“We’ll need to move him to the tub—could you help sit him up?”When the medic rolled up his sleeve, a solid forearm showed. But no matter how solid, it was no match for hunter strength. Sawon leaned toward Ji Hayeon.“I’ll just move him.”Before the medic could object, Sawon had his arms under Ji Hayeon’s shoulders and knees and lifted him. A low curse slipped from his chest.“Didn’t you make that dose too light. Looks like he still has the energy to swear.”Seeing him with only enough energy to curse, the medic gave an awkward smile. Still in his patient gown, Ji Hayeon was set down in the tub. Watching the medic undo the top buttons, Sawon slapped dust from his hands in a pantomime. At that sound, Nine peeked in from the doorway. The baby monkey scurried over, perched on the edge of the tub, and stared at Ji Hayeon’s left forearm. There was a metal bracelet strapped on like a garter belt, with a small puffball dangling like a pendant. The medic paused mid-undressing and pointed at the accessory on his arm.“This is an Amplifier, right? It wouldn’t release, so I left it. Could you take this off first?”Just as Ji Hayeon frowned and reached for the Amplifier with his other hand, Nine grabbed the puffball on his forearm with curious eyes. Ji Hayeon’s shout cracked like lightning.“Don’t touch that!”“Squeak!”Nine jumped. Even so, he didn’t let go of the puffball. Drained by the sedative, Ji Hayeon couldn’t easily shove Nine away. The two of them wrestled over a single puffball.“Hey, you’re not… letting go?!”The squealing monkey’s bellow rang through the bathroom. Right next to that sound, the medic flinched and half-covered his ears. Sawon reached for Nine.“Nine. That’s big bro’s. Come here.”But Nine, being stubborn, spasmed away from Sawon’s hand, still clutching the puffball in one fist. In his flailing, Nine’s foot planted on the medic’s lips like a stepping stone.“Gah!”Startled, the medic spat in disgust at the animal foot that had gone into his mouth.“Nine.”Sawon was just about to grab him when Nine’s foot kicked the faucet handle.Shaaah.Water burst from the showerhead, and the three huddled around the tub were drenched as-is.“Squeak, squeak!”“Ha….”Sawon pulled Nine into his arms and pried open the small fingers one by one.“Stubborn little thing. Keep that up and I’ll give your squeaky, foul-tempered toy to big bro!”Nine turned back at him in protest. In that gap, Sawon swiftly plucked the puffball from his hand. The medic hurried to shut off the water. In the space after the brief rampage, Nine’s protests echoed. Halfheartedly soothing him, Sawon snuck a glance at Ji Hayeon. Clutching the puffball ornament on his Amplifier, he was glaring at Sawon. Deer-like lashes were beaded with droplets. Looking at the tightly bitten lips, the expression seemed on the verge of tears, and a useless twinge of guilt pricked him.“Sorry. He gets stubborn like that sometimes….”“…Take him out.”Hugging his knees, he buried his face between them. Leaving the medic to ask if he was okay and try to soothe him, Sawon closed the bathroom door. Even as the crack narrowed, his eyes kept drifting to the sight of Ji Hayeon.Even after the door shut, Sawon stood there for a long while. Replaying what had just happened, he clicked his tongue.I’m getting the feel. Fussy, hard to handle, and stubborn on top of it. I’m only doing this because it’s for a bit — if they told me to babysit that guy long-term…“Ugh. Horrible. I’d sooner leave the country.”
