Since most goblins had an aptitude for flying wyverns they had separate lessons from the humans. It was unknown how it would actually be affected. Goblin's body structure also helps them hang on to mounts that humans wouldn't necessarily have the same advantages.
Kurt was surprised to see that Jacob and Sara were there. Steve and Tyler had shown up too. The Valentines's also had a dozen men ready for the lesson.
One of the scout goblins came up, "Hello everyone I'm Todd, I will be instructing today. Several others will be helping one-on-one when necessary, waving to a few others."
Todd continued, "The first thing we are going to have to do is see if any of them have a bit of liking for each of you. It would be better if they liked your smell immediately. So we will be going out to a flock of them and basically seeing if any walk up to you."
"So we keep one for ourselves?" said Jacob.
"That would be best," said Todd, "if none of them take a particular lifelong we can deal with that too. So we are going to head out, and after that, we will lead them back here. And learn how to saddle them. My team will help lead them hopefully in some groups, once we all have one saddled up, we will really start having some fun."
Todd had led them to a place where a big group of wyvern had been corralled. Before they could get all the way there one of them broke line and darted at the group.
"Don't worry he's just excitable," said Todd.
The wyvern came to the group and fell down near Jacob and slowly started to move closer. "Is it supposed to do that?"
"Go on, give him a pet," said Todd.
Jacob put his hand out to pet the wyvern's head and it seemed to enjoy it. One of the instructor teams came up. Jacob apparently had already found one.
"Awesome," said Jacob, "I got a saddle just for you." Jacob had probably been making a lot of them.
The rest of the group came into the flock and slowly a few of the wyverns started to pick out the members of the group. The instructors lead them off to teach them to saddle them. Sometimes having to wait until another group finishes.
They all stayed on the ground, there were goblins there watching over them from the start. Kurt didn't fully understand the taming spell but it seemed to work very well.
One of the larger ones came up to Kurt and snapped at his face and an instructor, a shaman goblin, got between them using his large staff to lead the creature. "Maybe a different one for you sir,"
Eventually, most of the group had found a wyvern. But it seemed the wyvern may have remembered Kurt from their battle a bit. As he got more negative than positive reactions.
Almost the last one left to not have a wyvern of his own Kurt approached one and it simply knelt down to look at the ground. And cupped it face up looking it in the eyes. "Don't be scared," said Kurt.
The creature then started to nuzzle Kurt's arm and Kurt petted him some more. He made a reaction when the tail had poked him a bit. But it seemed at least he wasn't afraid of him.
Kurt was the last one to get his wyvern saddle up. He felt a little embarrassed by it somehow. The saddle came across the form in an X-box pattern. This keeps it mostly out of its wingspan. The goblin explained the sitting position would be more hunched unlike a horse where you had to keep your legs more across the body. The saddle is provided for this position.
The reins were simple enough to put over the wyvern's mouth and fit snug like a loser belt. With the ropes leading back to the saddle.
Todd got everyone's attention. Now we also have harnesses, you don't have to always use them but we are going to use them today. The harnesses came around their legs and upper body with strips of rope and leather.
On the front and back of the harness, there were two long cords, they explained that they would hook or tie them to parts of the saddle. The hooks in the back so they could remove them themselves but tied up so it couldn't come undone by accident.
This made a lot of the people there feel instantly safer.
"We're going to take a lift off," said Todd. "Don't try anything fancy, landing can be bumpy. Everyone should be with an instructor group. We will take off in groups. Just up, then turn around and back down, not very high. Remember we squeeze to go faster and pull back, not to slow down." Todd raised his hand up and down like he was holding reins, and showed the difference between tilting and pulling. "And remember you can lean in and out, coming out of a more hunched position will signal to slow down as well. So don't hug him close hoping he will slow down. You will be signaling the opposite to him."
A few of the group went before Kurt. They had varying success but Everton had managed to go up and come down.
When Kurt came up his group was to follow the instructor like everyone else. But on the back hunched over a bit you had to feel the rise in your stomach.
The wind in the air. Kurt had been higher and faster but he could never exactly turn and stay airborne like this. The wyvern reacted to the Kurt movement. It was very natural. When they were explaining it it didn't click as well as when you say the head in front of you flying and feel its breath beneath you.
He banked the turn, causing him to come a bit sideways, it was a strange feeling to feel it pushing him into his seat. He moved down and the beast started to speed up, remembering what the man said Kurt took a more neutral posture, and he reacted.
Holding the reign Kurt pulled down and the wyvern started to descend. Coming to the found was a bit bumpy but it was an experience.
"So how was everyone's first flight, not so difficult right? See how the reigns are less important during the cruise. You can use your body."
The next maneuver that was going to be explained was how to make it stay a bit stationary in the air. The reins this time came in much more important, maneuvering slowly required a bit more flexibility. The concept was simple, you pulled, with an emphasis on not yanking, but keeping a tension. Slowly back and start straightening up your posture. From this position, you can move a bit slowly. And point him in a direction and let loose and he'll fly.
They all came down.
"We should feed them, and explain some of their diet," said Todd. "You should probably give them a name sometime." Kurt decided to name him Rico because of the way he screamed sometimes.
They spent the rest of the day learning similar simple maneuvers. The instructors also wanted to ensure everyone was confident in lifting off and landing. So up and down in groups built some of that.
They ended the day with a cleaning of their wyverns. All of them seemed to enjoy getting a good scrub with a brush.
"I think we all did well today. No one had to use their harness which is a good sign. I think we can start some faster drills tomorrow."
"Faster?"
"What we were thinking was a bit of a tour. We weren't sure how well they would take to human riders, or vice versa."
