Layla was explaining to Kurt how to use the tether that the True Sorcerer had created. It was odd. The process was different than Kurt expected. After the separation of the tether, he couldn't make one come out without the other.
"See there's a bit of a trick," said Layla, "you didn't have it ready yet, I wasn't sure you'd ever mature it. Since you're not a fae like me."
The trick was actually simple, yet impossible. It involved standing at the border of another gate. This allowed the two parts to move out.
"See this one is the one you keep somewhere," pointing at the stake, "and this part is what you take with you. You have to stand like this to switch them."
"I see," said Kurt, "I never noticed that part."
"Yeah, you have to stand in both worlds."
"So you are in my world because of the gate at Castle Bright Flame."
"Yes, I said that. But also because of this, it was easier for me because…I was born into it."
"So I should put the stake down."
"You should throw it."
"Throw it?"
"Yeah, away from my gate I don't want to test that."
After he did so, Layla and Kurt went to Helmbrig, where Layla's gate was currently. They were still waiting for Betsy's return.
"So let's move it somewhere else."
"How about Arrow Mountains?"
"Good idea."
At the arrow mountains, Kurt set up a gate. Slowly with Layla's help. He had watched her before, but it was a bit different weaving it out. But he had managed to form one. The flying helped as the strands that came out were very numerous and he needed a bigger canvas to do it.
It was like each part was webbing out and tying to each other, but you couldn't see the other side when you were doing it. You had to have a bit of a feeling for it.
He had done it though. It took him longer than Layla but Kurt understood how to make gates. At least at the size he was doing it at.
He didn't want to try a doorway-sized one, he understood better when Layla said it was about as small as she could make it. He felt he needed at least a double door to get it all right.
The next hour consisted of how to switch them so the anchor was in the right world to move the gate to the other.
Kurt had moved the gate near Carla's old nest. This would give her and Lilly more access to both. He didn't have a better idea until he and Betsy could talk.
"I think you are doing well," said Layla, "I would want to be there for the next couple of moves but for the most part I think you have all the parts."
"What about their method?"
"What about it?"
"We have the Lich's skull."
"Hmm," said Layla, "we would have to talk to the true sorcerer about that. I don't know how to create a mechanism like that. I have been able to do this since I didn't have a well."
"So you could have sent me back right at the beginning."
"You're still mad about that. No, I was telling you the truth. I knew I could make the gate but the power to do so would have triggered the well's awakening. This would have left me and the gnomes more vulnerable. Just pulling you here almost did it."
"How'd you do that exactly?"
"Well, the squirrel had the tether attached to it. And I yanked really hard in a way. The gate basically opened for a split second during the process. I'm not sure if you can really do that though, I yanked on the other plane. Pushing doesn't work, how do you push a rope?"
"And the squirrel was left over for a proper gate opening."
"No, he had placed the anchor, not the tether. After getting to you he was basically a normal squirrel, well always just marked by me."
"So it was trying to move me to the exact spot, the anchor placement, and succeeded."
"Precisely."
"And if it didn't?"
"I would have tried the next day, or later that day."
"Could you yank mine?"
Layla thought about it for a moment. "Yes, I believe so, but it would bring you with it most likely, maybe someone you grabbed on. I would have to be at the anchor so you would most likely have to spit the tether again."
"So one way."
"Yes."
"Good to know at least."
"The thing is I wouldn't necessarily be able to be signaled through it. And if your gate is open it would be impossible."
This was all somehow making sense to Kurt. Since the tether side remained attached to him and really only the anchor could remain where it was. You could switch the side of the gate the anchor was on but there was only one.
Layla could pull him because the anchor was on Earth and the tether was with her on Terra.
"That actually gives me an idea," said Layla.
"And what is that?"
"You know how we have to remain close when I'm outside the well's domain."
"Yeah."
"I wonder if your anchor counts."
"What are you saying?"
"That I might be able to make some trips alone, or without you in that way, holding the anchor. We have to test this out."
This was one of Layla's major restrictions. She had to be close to Kurt outside of her or a well she had saturated with her power.
Kurt thought about that for a moment. How Mary looked when she was taken by Layla. And about the drastic change in her fountain. Wouldn't that mean the effects on all of the fae be intensified?
From Kurt's understanding, it was the creation of a pump, or actually a physical fountain, that was creating most of the saturation. And those pumps were formed with Kurt and Layla's power combined.
He also understood the True Sorcerer way was entirely different. As their way depended on having access to the second world through an already created gate, even Layla originally.
