Joe had already risen above them because he could stop. They had hoped there might be a conversation. Maybe they could negotiate after all.
That wouldn't be normal in a war, but there were only three of them. So Kurt and Tom had stopped, with Kurt in front facing the first opponent.
"Three against one," said the demon.
"Well, more than that I guess," said Kurt, "there are the other wyverns. But is there something we can help you with?"
"You are attacking us."
"This is your fort, I didn't think the gods had."
"The shadow."
"So this has nothing to do with Horus."
"What happened to Horus you got on his bad side or something?" The demon gave a smile.
"So nothing to do with him," said Kurt. "And his death."
"He's dead? That's good to hear. But that doesn't change anything here. Is Lord Kurt is that right? I'd hate to kill the wrong Lord. Politics and all you understand."
"Then why stop?"
"I thought you were going to surrender. But since we are here. Why serve the fae? That's the part I could never really figure out."
"What the hell do I know about things like you?"
"Hmm, I see. Knowledge and perhaps disposition. Disappointing so…human. Well, I'm going to kill you now."
At that, the demon made a mad dash at Kurt. Kurt had taken a push back gripping his sword in a defensive stance.
As he came close Kurt slowly started an illusion swiped. The demon was caught a bit off guard, their weapons clashed.
They had both simply tested each other. The demon took the third dimension of the air battle and form was hard to expect.
An arrow shoots right past the sea mom's head and it barely dodges, Kurt scattered into illusion copies making a water fist. He had normally started this way, but felt it was better to try to surprise him.
Kurt created a water fist in just form, pretending to hold the blade that was switching between the other illusions the demon had been able to avoid.
The demon made a flight upward and out, but he was greater than a fireball coming at him from Joe. The clouds around them started to grey.
The demon was a bit on the run but Kurt could tell he was still feeling out everything.
The demon had started to let off some energy bombs in her path. Making Kurt have to maneuver in a way that wasn't directly behind him.
After one went off the demon had stopped to greet Kurt with his sword. Kurt made a twist to the side and swung with the repeated bending blow.
The demon had a knife that it held and somehow stopped the swing, he wasn't sure how. And they darted away from each other, a light night bolt came down towards the demon but it had a shield.
He was growing more frustrated. Another opponent would be dead. They probably didn't know Kurt could actually fly. At least a bit uninformed about recent events.
Kurt was making more crescent slashes at the demon. He had started to use the bomb and a simple blast from his off hand. It could counter Kurt's attacks.
Kurt wasn't really using all of his power though. He could tap a bit deeper he knew it. He thought the demon was still holding back as well. But started to be less sure over time.
It seemed to dart and run and clash. A few times attempting to go after Tom but Kurt had managed to stop it or Tom avoided it.
Kurt thought he was handling the battle well until something hit him from behind and sent him flying across the sky into the ground.
"Kurt!" said Hank.
Kurt had managed to be kicked near where Hank's retreat was. They hadn't been ignoring it after all. Kurt had lost track of the second demon and never saw it coming.
"This isn't good," said Kurt as he rolled away from a spear that was hurling directly at him. He managed to dodge it but the spear evaporated, most likely back into the other demon's hand.
"You think they are after Lilly?"
"They are the shadow clan!"
"Then ummm," said Barney, "they might be after me. That spell was specifically designed. It would have probably stopped even Layla, and it is really her power we are using. So maybe not me specifically."
Kurt and Hank looked at Barney, he may have been right, killing a fae would destroy it well and all the powers of the guardian the springs would dry up. It was a big hit by itself.
"He might be right," said Kurt, "he didn't seem too knowledgeable about the most recent events."
"It's worse," said Hank, "it objectively makes everyone a target. We have to assume that."
"I can't leave the wyverns up there alone," said Kurt. "I'm going to have to take it up a notch. Keep going Harvey if they come try to get a good look at their eyes."
"Yes master," said Harvey. Harvey had a power that could make your reality twist and deform around you. It wouldn't actually do much more than that, but in flight, the effects would be doubled, as you could easily forget which way was up.
Kurt had to go back this time he would be putting a lot more of the red power he could use. It was difficult to control and needed a state of clarity that was hard for him to find to use effectively.
He had started to grasp it when he was with wyverns battle, before they tamed them. There was a timing and an expression of power, he'd been there once, so it would have to be easier the second time.
Dusting himself off from his fall, he shot into the sky again going towards his two opponents.
Kurt wasn't a natural flyer unlike his opponents but he wasn't going to let them kill everyone.
In the air, he saw them in fierce fight against many wyverns.
The spear demon and sword demon, distinguished by their weapons were fighting off some wyvern breaths but dealing easily. Kurt could see he was the real one suffering losses already and he had only been down a minute or two.
Kurt darted toward the spear demon but it was expecting a clash of swords. Kurt scattered into a dozen illusions, half heading to the sword demon.
He would have to try to fight them both at once. Switching between his illusion copies with his sword simultaneously doing the same thing.
Kurt was kicked by the sword demon, was it luck or was he getting a bit predictable? A spear came at him as well. But Kurt had slipped before it got to him.
Even as Kurt was giving out barrages of crescent waves while switching illusions, they were able to block or dodge them.
The soil in Kurt's concentration was hard to hang on to. He felt a looseness in his sword. A red beam slashed past a counterattack from a demon narrowly missing it.
Kurt put some acid in his fist and went for one of the wings, spraying it out with some hitting, indirectly.
"That fucking burns," said the Spear Demon.
Kurt felt a moment and slipped into an illusion behind the sword demon with his sword in hand. The sword spoke a word. And he let down a strike at the demon's shoulder connecting.
Kurt was slapped in the face by the demon's tail as they separated.
"You can't hold this up forever," said the demon and he dropped from the sky as a dozen spears came from behind him directly at Kurt.
Kurt dropped with him but the sword demon was swooping back up trying to force Kurt into it. Many of his illusions had been hit by the spear attacks
They took another round of sword volleys. And an arrow shot threw it wings. And a lightning bolt struck the spear of the other demon. Joe and Tom had found a moment.
Kurt was about to pass it up and made a motion with his sword. There was a moment of heavy feeling not the normal lightness, he had felt it before but this time Kurt had forced his way through. And pushed it out.
It sliced the left arm, wing, and leg of the sword demon past his block and continued down creating a rip in the ground, like someone had dug a perfectly straight down horizontal hole. The effect happened practically instantaneously.
There was one down.
The spear demon came at him because of the loss of his partner. Expecting Kurt to be tired after a blast like that.
The demon was probably more of a match than Marty. Kurt was moving about the same as he had seen Marty.
The spear demon was definitely the harder one. The spear already had a natural advantage over the sword in most combat situations. It was hard to get closer to the demon.
"Retreat!" yelled Kurt.
"Running away really?" said the spear demon "I guess I should see about that idiot, see if he told you anything at least. Don't think I'm the strongest one, I'm not even an Arch Demon." It laughed going after his friend.
The battle was a loss for Kurt. Their plan to take the fortress was thoroughly stopped. They wouldn't have this path anymore.
They hadn't been careless; they just didn't realize they had more weapons like them. They had suffered many more losses, it was unlikely the sword demon would remain alive for long, if it was even alive now.
Kurt had to assume all that he had discussed with him was going to be known by the shadow clan.
