"Boss, can you smell where we need to go? This place is like a maze and my nose is not picking up anything."
Lina complained as she looked at her boss, General Henry.
As a werewolf, a place like a sewage system's underground tunnel was the worst place for her to track her prey.
The foul smells from around clogged her nose and made it impossible to follow a trail. And from the expressions of the people around her, she could tell that they felt the same.
The only one who seemed to have a handle on his senses was General Henry. But he was an extraordinary talent among the werewolves.
He and his family were some of the few people who had the power of the 'alpha' and could command the other wolves.
That's why the secretary felt worried that he might choose to follow the shopkeeper and doom a lot of other wolves in the process.
But that was a worry for another time. For now, they needed to catch the rats that were trying to hide from them.
"Don't worry, Lina. Since the shopkeeper asked us to come here, I am sure we will find something soon. If not, I have full faith that the shopkeeper will send us some kind of signal to indicate where we need to go."
General Henry was sure about this, but Lina was not ready to believe that such a thing could occur.
"General, you are a little too trusting of the shopkeeper. He is not omnipresent—"
Her words got cut halfway as a huge explosion shook the tunnel around her and the others. The loud explosive noise was easy to track.
"Looks like the shopkeeper did give us a signal after all. See, I told you there was no need to doubt him. Do you believe me now?"
General Henry asked Lina, but she just looked at the scene in front of her with doubtful eyes.
There was no way she was willing to believe that what happened was anything more than a coincidence. It could also be a trap, so they needed to be careful.
Not that General Henry considered any of that as he walked past her and headed deeper into the tunnel.
The presence of rodents around them was getting stronger and stronger. There were about a million now, and the police had to stop as they reached the end.
What greeted them was a huge rat tainted with the power of a god.
"W-What is that thing? Is it… a cursed being? General, what do we do now?"
Lina asked as she looked at the giant rat in front of her.
The general was quiet as he looked at the situation. Now that he could sense the rats, he found that more than one thing was wrong with the situation.
First, not only the huge rat, but the smaller rats were brimming with the curse as well. The god's power covered every corner of the place.
"Boss, this is—"
"Yes—! It's a temple. No, it's not there yet. But the place has started to become a temple due to the high concentration of faith here. We need to do something, or the town will be in danger soon."
The main problem with gods was that they were territorial.
If these rats offered the town to their god, then the humans would have no place to go.
"We need to hurry. We cannot let these rats do as they please anymore. Curse or not, it'll end once the rats are dead."
General Henry told the officers as they ripped the place apart using their magic.
Waves after waves of magic caused rats to drop. But the rats did not resist or try to fight back.
Even the giant rat accepted her fate with a calm look on its face.
"General, doesn't something seem… wrong? These rats are rushing toward us as if they cannot wait to end their lives. They are hardly attacking as well. Do you think this is a trap?"
Lina asked as she fought against the rats rushing to their deaths. But the general told her nothing.
Thousands of rats were eradicated, but the general felt nothing. After all, this was war, and these rats seemed to know what they were doing.
"N-No—! All of this… how did you find us? Why did you kill them? O-Our lord promised us a paradise. We were all going to gain enlightenment."
The human who came back to see dozens of rat bodies littering the ground collapsed. He seemed shaken, and his body shook.
"General, that is… a rat as well?"
Lina questioned as she looked at the collapsed man. She could sense the curse in him as well, but it was also balanced by a blessing.
It was possible that the human hybrid was the one who was going to make this sacrifice to his god.
"Give up, you cursed being. Your greed has already made the others around you suffer. You should repent by closing your eyes and surrendering to the glory of our lord."
General Henry closed his eyes before he recited a prayer.
The rat-human hybrid attacked him, but his magic cleaned the area, and the rat-hybrid widened his eyes as he felt the magic wash over him.
"May you follow a better god in your next life. That way, your faith won't be misplaced."
The general told the hybrid before the danger perished.
The police looked at all the dead bodies around them with a worried look on their faces. They had a sudden feeling that they were in trouble.
"Ah, that reminds me. We need to clean this place up before tomorrow. So I will be counting on all of you. Lina, let's go and file a report that this incident has been taken care of."
Everyone groaned, but no one complained against their orders.
Both Lina and General Henry quickly got out of the sewage tunnel and took a breath.
"Another case done. Looks like our efficiency report this month will be off the charts. It's all thanks to the shopkeeper."
General Henry looked happy to give all the credit to the shopkeeper, and that annoyed Lina to no end.
The police were the ones to do all the work, so why was the shopkeeper getting praised? Also, someone was looking at her.
"Boss, someone else is here."
The female told the general, and he noticed the man as well.
"Sir, good day. I am General Henry Beckerman of the police force. May I know what you are doing here and what you saw?"
The general asked, and the man looked startled before he complied.
"I-I did not see much. Just a man dressed in a cloak and a mask telling the rats to return. As soon as they were flooding the underground tunnel. I-I don't know anything else."
The man professed, and Lina took in a sharp breath.
"So… someone sent all the rats down at once to try and help us out? What a stroke of luck."
She exclaimed, but General Henry just laughed at her.
"Luck? There is no luck. I told you before, right? The shopkeeper keeps helping us. He must have sent his assistant to guide these rats down for us. I will need to thank him for this."
