He turned his head to look at him.
He was an X-Guardian too, wearing the same attire, but his was a vivid red.
And that was because his hair was also blood red, flaying lightly in the wind as if no longer affected by gravity.
He leaned down just enough to reach the holographic panel, but once upright, his full height became clear.
At roughly three meters, he was as towering as Boss Ash.
"And how did you know this is my first mission?" Everlearn asked, looking at the man whose face was also half-hidden by the coat.
"Answer my question first," he replied, and Everlearn turned his attention back to the holographic panel, but not before replying in a clear voice:
"Fuck off."
A crimson glint crossed through the man's eyes as he looked at the back of Everlearn's head.
Everlearn's gaze continued on the panel, quickly finding a mission that seemed good enough.
It was a mission to stop the violence that had erupted in a local area in Cornando City.
As for the perpetrators of the violence, they were just some local thugs in the area.
The mission was also rated Grade D, meaning it was one of the lower-grade missions.
After all, missions extended up to S-level.
D was a perfect way to start.
As he tapped on the mission, a tiny holograph popped up, and he took it in his palm, walking toward the staff.
A woman took the pop-up from him, keeping it in an oven-like tech gadget at the side for a quick scan, and immediately began typing rapidly.
A moment later…
BEEEP!
A beeping sound came from his watch, and he turned to it, finding a pending mission notification.
"I see it's your first mission, so I'll take you through the basics," she said, quickly explaining.
"Missions extend from S grades to E grades, making D-Grade missions on the lower side of things, but since it's your first, it's just perfect."
"There's a time limit to it, a total of 7 days, and that is because the jet that will take you to Cornando will leave 7 days after it drops you off."
"After it leaves without you on it, the mission will be automatically marked a failure, and you won't receive the reward for completing it, even if you eventually complete the mission."
"And if the jet leaves without you, you will have to find your own way back to the X-Guard Tower."
"There's no penalty for not being able to complete a mission, though it does mean your points will begin to fall, stopping you from fulfilling requirements to take on higher-grade missions and earn more."
"Since you don't have any points right now anyway, you're pretty much good."
"Still, make sure to complete the mission before 7 days, so you get the reward and also a free ride back."
"The watch in your hands has an automatic AI that is like a judge, being able to determine whether you have completed the mission or not."
"You don't have to worry about how right it is. It's never wrong, and once it marks your mission as complete, your opinions don't matter. The mission is complete."
"But the opposite can also happen, in which case you'll have to go the extra mile to find out why it is yet to mark your mission completed."
She explained, and Everlearn's brow creased slightly, turning to the watch.
He had no idea it held such a feature.
"The jet will be waiting for you in the hangar. You should feel the pull to it from your X-Guard card. Best of luck!"
"Thank you," he said, and without another word, stepped out from the hall.
He had forgotten the crimson-haired man who had asked him why Cornando, but unknown to him, the man never forgot, his crimson eyes on Everlearn, even as he disappeared out the door.
He turned to the holograph, which had already reset, and his fingers, which were actually lean-looking claws, tapped out the words:
"Cornando City," in the search bar.
He grabbed a mission at random without a second thought, got it registered by the staff, and then headed out of the hall.
________________
"So this is the hangar, huh? Pretty wild," Everlearn mused as he looked around him.
It was a wide expanse of grass, and as far as his eyes could see, it was filled with travel jets.
There were thousands of them, with a few X-Guardians entering some before taking off into the sky.
Everlearn followed the pull, and soon enough, he also appeared before one of the jets.
The door opened automatically, signalling it was the one, and he took his seat.
The AI voice echoed out after.
"Please strap in correctly."
It instructed as he grabbed the belt, fastening it over himself.
"Thank you for following the instructions. The jet will now begin its flight to Cornando City in port in 10… 9…"
The countdown hit one, and Everlearn felt the reverberations as his jet lifted off, soaring swiftly into the distance.
These jets operated without human pilots, with each flight logged and guided completely by AI.
Everlearn wasn't new to this.
Even some major, high-profile airports have switched certain planes to fully automatic AI flights, tested to perform even better than human pilots.
{A/N: I wonder if this is out yet on Earth?}
In addition, a panel showed him a full 360-degree view of everything around, while a pair of parachutes rested just within arm's reach overhead.
These were in case of emergencies.
He could see the kilometer markers on the map, showing both the distance the jet had traveled and the distance remaining, along with the estimated time to reach the destination.
Though there was an option to accelerate the jet past its standard speed, Everlearn saw no reason to use it.
He had an entire week to himself; that was all the time in the world to do everything he needed.
All he needed now was patience.
