Reborn As The Barbarian God

Chapter 48: At Sea

None of the other barbarians could swim as well. They never had a need for it, and it wasn't included in their training since none of them expected to find themselves struggling in a sea.

How could Galthor even know how to swim? He didn't even know he could jump before he was reborn into a new world!

The salty waters of the sea rolled and seethed around him, threatening to drown him if he did not do something. The first thing he did was to stop thrashing and get his thoughts in order.

No matter the enemy, whether living or natural, the first thing to do was to stop panicking and think.

With that out of the way, he began to claw his way to the surface, and he found it easy. His natural strength with his Divine energy gave him the needed power to throw himself upward.

"Ahhhggghhh!" He gasped as his head broke the surface, sucking in large breaths, his eyes red from the water. He shook his head. "Damn it, are you guys alright?"

One by one, the other masters broke the surface of the sea with their heads, shaking off the water from their faces. Their powers as masters made it so they could swim, even if it was awkwardly moving their hands up and down.

"Chief, where are we? Are we still in the Abyssal Land? Why did we suddenly find ourselves here?" Karathra asked, her eyes still wide from the rude shock of suddenly finding herself struggling in the sea.

The others were the same as they looked at him for answers.

Why were they in the sea? Galthor resisted the urge to point out that they were all there when it happened, and shouldn't he be asking them as the natives of the Divine World?

But how would he say something like that when his dignity would definitely suffer? His voice came out calm and composed. "I assume this is a trap of the Abyssal Land. Just like the flesh-eating trees and sunken grounds, this sea might be an illusion."

The sea splashed around them in small waves, and it definitely did not feel like an illusion.

"We need to get out of here," Ashclaw said.

"I agree. We can't fight in the sea, and we are completely in the open. Anything can attack us," Hrothgar commented.

Even now, they were all staying afloat with the sheer might of their bodies, moving their legs to keep from sinking.

Galthor nodded his agreement. But the question still remained, how would they get out of the sea? There was no ship!

They could swim to dry land, but where exactly was the dry land?

They needed to first know what their surroundings were like. "We need to know which place the dry land lies. Come here, Rukar."

As far as barbarians go, Rukar was the smallest Galthor had ever seen, almost the size of himself, and if not for his rugged face and thick fingers, he might even pass as one.

The rat-faced master swam closer to him without hesitation. "What is it, Chief?"

Galthor was the strongest among them; even Hrothgar couldn't compare to him in strength. So when he placed his left hand on Rukar's shoulder, the barbarian began to sink, but before the water closed over his face, his right hand supported him by holding his other shoulder.

Galthor gripped both and grinned. "Your mission is to look for where dry land is and map out our surroundings."

A panicked look entered Rukar's face. "Chief, what are you speaking of? What do you... ahhgggggghhhh!!"

He never got the chance to finish as Galthor temporarily stopped swimming to stay afloat and flung the barbarian upward, sending him out with a splash of water and screaming.

Galthor couldn't help himself as he grinned. He rubbed his hands together, looking at the others as Rukar soared high into the sky like a homemade rocket.

The others quickly moved far away from him.

He chuckled. '...that was fun. I should use my strength more...'

"HAAAAAaaaaaaaa!" Rukar shouted on his way back as he slammed into the water with a mighty splash.

They gave the barbarian time to get his bearings and swim back to them. His small face squeezed up while he did his best not to glare at his chief. He was nearly breathless. "Chief! N—Next time give me a warning!"

'...hell no, what's the fun in that? It's like throwing a ball! Now I should be able to play ball as well, right...'

But as always, Galthor nodded and said with a straight face, "Of course."

Rukar looked at him wearily and kept his distance. "From the brief look, I can't see any land nearby. But I saw something strange floating not far from here, toward the northwest."

Galthor frowned. '..whatever or whoever brought us here is going to make their move sooner or later, and we need to be ready for that when it happens..'

"My guess is we are in some kind of pocket world or something like that. And the only purpose we're here can't be anything more than our death," Galthor said bluntly. "We need to prepare. That thing that Rukar spotted is likely what's coming for us."

"Then we need to know more about it!" Drakira said.

Galthor nodded. "I agree. That's the only way we can prepare."

"What preparation can we make in the middle of the sea?" Karathra asked.

Galthor frowned. "Something like this!"

And a moment later, Rukar was in the air screaming again. He thought the distance he created was enough, but even in the water, Galthor had moved faster than he thought, and he even threw him with one hand this time!

The others subtly gave their fellow master a pitying look and did their best not to make it obvious that they were moving far from their chief.

Galthor was still looking as deadpan as ever and also behaved as if he didn't see what they were doing.

But even while he was doing all of this, his senses were stretched to their limits for danger.
