Dammit… these stats were supposed to be strong… what the hell happened back there.

"You were naive," A cold voice echoed through the room as a woman with short white hair stepped through the doors of the private infirmary I was currently resting in.

"Shut up…"

"I hope you understand everybody back there died because of you… Do you have anything else to say?" Mother asked in a tone colder than ever.

Even though she didn't say it, I felt the feeling that she was basically saying, "told you so," in the most demeaning way possible.

"It's your fucking fault for telling the enemy where I was… it was you, wasn't it? The reason why the enemy knew where we were? You informed them to get me to fail this mission,"

"You're half right, as it is partly my fault as to why your group died, but also, the other half is your fault. I placed people who thought they were slick and who infiltrated our faction in the selection process when you were selecting the people for your group. Congrats on almost having a clean sweep… but in the end, two traitors amongst your group were still detrimental… well, they were more like spies, not even traitors,"

"So it is your fucking fault-"

"You failed to see that they weren't one of us. You're not an empress anymore where you're all-powerful, and people will listen to you out of fear. Plus, you can't make up the mistakes with your power by just simply killing everybody when the time comes,"

"Then, did you really have to sacrifice all those people just to teach me a lesson?"

"I didn't intend to teach you a lesson, but test to see if you're still an arrogant person… and clearly you still are no matter what you say," Mother said, and her words were like a stab through my heart.

"I'm trying to be better-"

"Then try harder. You're not the same person you were before, so stop acting like you have some leeway with your mistakes. If this was an important mission, you would've failed me due to your naivety which sprouts from your arrogance. Now, rip out the weed before it actually does something detrimental to our organization,"

As my mother stood there, hands in her hoodie pocket, I could only hang my head with shame, unable to look up at her.

"I-I'm sorry," I winced, moving under the blankets in order to hide myself from her cold eyes.

To be honest, I would've preferred if it was a glare as I would know she is angry for my sake, but she is just cold and ruthless… for a reason, but it still hurts.

"*sigh*... I'm sorry as well," Mother said, walking over to the edge of the bed and sitting down on it, reaching her hand out to touch my hair, but I quickly swatted it away.

"Am I a failure?"

"At this moment, you are…." She muttered, only putting me down further as my pride was being eaten away slowly and slowly by her words. "But, a failure can help you grow into a better person,"

She reached out her hand once again, and this time, I let her stroke my hair, allowing me to turn towards her and snuggle my face into the palm of her rough pale hand.

"So it was a lesson," I lightly smirked, looking up at my mother, whose expression of worry turned to joy as she chuckled just a bit.

"I guess it was…."

There was a moment of silence as I slowly sat up and hugged my mother tightly, and as her warm arms embraced me, I couldn't help but begin to leak tears.

"O-Oh, I'm sorry, baby… I guess I was too harsh…."

"N-No, it's just… I-I really liked those guys… a-and… I don't know… I really liked spending time with them,"

It was only for a few days, but I felt I had really bonded with them under the pressure of being in enemy territory.

Anything life-threatening with somebody will only make your bond stronger, whether that is out of a conscious sense or an instinctual sense.

"I see… I'm sorry… but they're all dead. We managed to kill everybody else who slaughtered them, but I can't bring them back,"

"C-Can, the death maid-"

"She can, but will not. Tampering with the forces of life will have her punished, and she may not seem like it, but she is very, very selfish… well, most of the time. Plus, I think she also agrees that this serves as a good lesson for you to learn how to deal with loss,"

"I-I see…."

"Have you ever dealt with something like that in your previous life? Or were you just too focused on yourself to care about anybody else?"

I paused for just a moment before cracking open my dry lips.

"I did… but he ended up betraying me, so I saw no point in caring about others… although I kind of regret thinking that," I lightly chuckled as my tears slowly began to dissipate and a wave of exhaustion rushed through me.

"Now, get some well-deserved rest… I love you," My mother smiled, kissing the top of my head and leaning on her cheek to receive a kiss from me.

I quickly gave her a peck on the cheek just before drifting off into the land of dreams, still in my mother's arms, as she comforted me without a second thought.
